This talk explores a trio of related takes on how to investigate the nature of human-like intelligence. The first concerns cognitive architectures – implemented models of the fixed structure and processes that yield natural and artificial minds – with a drill down to Sigma, an attempt at a deep synthesis across what has been learned over the past four decades on (what started as) high-level symbolic cognitive architectures versus the low-level graphical/network technologies of probabilistic graphical models (such as Bayesian networks) and neural networks. The second concerns a more abstract attempt at specifying a Common Model of Cognition that yields an evolving community consensus over what must be part of any cognitive architecture for human-like intelligence. The final take concerns an even more abstract (and speculative) attempt at understanding more deeply the space of approaches to intelligence – framed as maps resulting from cross products among core cognitive dichotomies – along with how such maps may help to understand and structure the capabilities required for (human-like) intelligence.

Paul Rosenbloom is a professor of computer science in the Viterbi School of Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC) and director for cognitive architecture research at USC’s Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT). He was a member of USC’s Information Sciences Institute for two decades, ending as its deputy director, and earlier was on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University and Stanford University (where he had a joint appointment in Computer Science and Psychology). His research concentrates on cognitive architectures (models of the fixed structures and processes that together yield a mind), the Common Model of Cognition (an attempt at developing a community consensus concerning what must be part of a human-like mind), and on computing as a scientific domain (understanding the computing sciences as akin to the physical, life and social sciences). He is a fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), the Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the Cognitive Science Society; and with J. Laird was recently awarded the Herbert A. Simon Prize for Advances in Cognitive Systems. He has served as councilor and conference chair for AAAI; chair of the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence; and president of the faculty at USC.

October is National Disability Awareness Month!

<Tagline>Celebrate w/the Office of Accessibility & Disability Service</Tagline>

National Disability Awareness Month is a national campaign held in October that raises awareness about issues for people living with disabilities, and celebrates the many and varied contributions of Americans with disabilities.

NDAM's roots go back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with various types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to "National Disability Awareness Month."

However, the fight is not done.

Americans with disabilities make up almost one-fifth of our population, but are unemployed at a rate that is twice that of people without disabilities; and for women and racial/ethnic minorities with disabilities, the rates are even higher. People with disabilities still face discrimination by employers, limited access to skills training, and, too often, unfairly low expectations.

We must continue to promote inclusion in the workplace and in our society.

We must tear down the barriers that remain -- in hearts, minds, and in policies -- to the security and prosperity that stable jobs provide and that all people deserve.

And we must actively foster a culture in which individuals are supported and accepted for who they are and in which it is okay to disclose one's disability without fear of discrimination.

The Presidential Proclamation of 2015 states: “America is at its strongest when we harness the talents and celebrate the distinct gifts of all our people. This October, as we observe the 70th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, let us pay tribute to all who fought for better laws, demanded better treatment, and overcome ignorance and indifference to make our Nation more perfect. In their honor, and for the betterment of generations of Americans to come, let us continue the work of removing obstacles to employment so every American has the chance to develop their skills and make their unique mark on the world we share.”

October is LGBTQ+ History Month!

<Tagline>Celebrate with the Mosaic, Women’s Center, and LSU</Tagline>

LGBTQ+ History Month originated in the United States, and was first celebrated in 1994. This month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer history celebrates role models, and the history of the LGBTQ+ rights and related civil rights movements. In the United States, it is celebrated in October to coincide with National Coming Out Day on October 11. However, countries recognize this month at different times of the year according to their specific significant events (e.g. United Kingdom recognizes this in February)

It was founded by Missouri high-school history teacher Rodney Wilson. Many gay and lesbian organizations supported the concept early on as did Governors William Weld of Massachusetts and Lowell Weicker of Connecticut, who recognized the inaugural month with official proclamations. In 1995, the National Education Association indicated support of LGBTQ+ History Month as well as other history months by resolution at its General Assembly.

So why do we have Pride Month in June and LGBTQ+ History Month in October?

Wilson chose October as the month for the celebration due to National Coming Out Day. It was established as a widely known event, on October 11, the date of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights that took place in 1987. June is recognized as Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall Riots taking place on June 28-July 1.

Diversity in the Workplace

<Tagline>How to be involved in a more diverse workplace.</Tagline>

My name is Makayla Gleeson, I am a Career Peer Advisor for the Career Center and I will be running the Career Center blog. I’m currently a graduate student in the Public Policy department studying Public Management. This blog will be updated every two weeks on Mondays, so be sure to check back!

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, diversity in the workforce is an issue I think about a lot. Frequently, a workplace “culture” can involve the same types of people together, and it can be intimidating if one doesn’t fit in. But diversity in the workforce is a huge advantage to an employer and a huge advantage to the employees. While employees may feel more comfortable to be themselves in a diverse environment, they’re also more likely to collaborate creatively in an environment that fosters diverse thought. This is great for an employee but even better for employers who appreciate creative solutions to problems they look to solve.

Employer partners will come to UMBC to mingle with students and recruit students from diverse backgrounds; however, this event is open to all students. Our keynote speaker for this event is Karl W. Reid, the Executive Director of the National Society of Black Engineers. Have freedinner and win great prizes. Meet employers who are interested in diversifying their workforce. Top organizations will be on hand to discuss career opportunities within their organizations/agencies. Dress professionally and bring several copies of your resume. A list of organizations will be available on the Career Center's website. Limited seating will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. This event is co-hosted by the Career Center and the UMBC Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. You can find more information on the Career Center MyUMBC page here.

If you’re interested in working for the government and have a disability, the Career Center also offers the Workforce Recruitment Program. The WRP is a recruitment and referral program for students and recent graduates to connect with employers looking to hire. More information can be found here. If you’re interested in registering, contact Caroline Bodnar at carolc@umbc.edu.

There are plenty more resources the Career Center offers for specific populations! For students of all backgrounds, there are resources linked on the Career Center website for the common barriers students run into when they are looking for a diverse work environment. Whether you are LGBTQ+, a student with special needs, an international student, or a student with military experience, there are resources available to you through the Career Center that can help you find the right work environment for you.

Finding the right employer doesn’t have to be an arduous task. The Career Center helps all UMBC students, no matter their background. You can get specialized career help by scheduling an appointment with a Career Specialist through the “schedule an appointment” button on UMBCWorks, or you can utilize the online resources available on the Career Center website.

Researcher of the Week: Tony Cano

<Tagline>URA Scholar Conducts International Research in Colombia!</Tagline>

Anthony S. Cano is a URA Scholar and Media & Communication/ Political Science major, with a minor in Information Systems, who will graduate in Fall, 2020.

Title of your research project: Informal Resettlement of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in Cartagena, Colombia: A Visual Exploration and Oral History.

Describe your project: My research project is about understanding the nature of IDPs, their resettlement process to urban areas, and their living conditions in their new settlements. I used two research methods during my field-work to withdraw evidence to analyze and answer my project questions.

Who is your mentor for your project?

Dr. Felipe Filomeno, Political Science.

How did you find your mentor?

I took Dr. Filomeno's POLI 361 - Comparative Political Analysis class and thought he was a good candidate due to his research background.

How did you become interested in this project?

I have done journalistic independent projects in the past about similar topics but after taking several political science classes, I wanted to conduct an interdisciplinary project using social science theories and my visual art skills. At the same time, I really wanted to know more about IDPs in general and the different types of migration.

What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?

The hardest part about my project has been transcribing the video-interviews because my subjects did not speak Spanish fluently. I did not expect to be planning every single activity or action throughout my research, however, this has also helped me to be more organized with my research deadlines.

What has been the most rewarding part?

The chance to travel to Colombia, South America to interview IDPs in Nelson Mandela, Cartagena, and experience a new culture.

How will you disseminate your research?

I intend to present my research at URCAD 2020, and hopefully publish a paper about my project findings.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

Research something you’re passionate about, educate yourself on the topic, become an expert on the topic, find an issue on the topic, study the issue closely, formulate an idea and make a proposal.

What are your career goals?

After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in photojournalism to have the opportunity to continue to study and research more issues like this one around the world.

A 360 video I made in in Nelson Mandela:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIttmBBmAO4&t=213s
