Abstract:
We develop a fast implementation of the mixed finite element method for the Darcy’s problem discretized by lowest-order Raviart-Thomas finite elements using Matlab. The implementation is based on the so-called vector- ized approach applied to the computation of the finite element matrices and assembly of the global finite element matrix. The code supports both 2D and 3D domains, and the finite elements can be triangular, rectangular, tetrahedral or hexahedral. The code can also be easily modified to import user-provided meshes. We comment on our freely available code and present a performance comparison with the standard approach.
Congratulations!

What's Your Green Dot? Learn more through Green Dot Overview Training

Green Dot is built on the premise that in order to measurably reduce the perpetration of power-based personal violence, including sexual violence, partner violence, or stalking, a cultural shift is necessary. In order to create a cultural shift, a critical mass of people will need to engage in a new behavior or set of behaviors that will make violence less sustainable within any given community. The “new behavior” is a green dot. This extremely interactive session is great for you to:

Understand the impact of power-based personal violence on campus and in various communities

Learn how to identify power-based personal violence and respond within the bounds of your strengths and limitations

Practice newly developed skills to be prepared for enacting this in your daily life

Intern of the Week: Subha Mojumder for Information Systems!

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Quark Security Inc.

Position Title: IT/Cybersecurity Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Information Systems

Current Class Level: Senior

Work Term: Summer 2019

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or
research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I had the pleasure of working for Quark Security
as a IT/Cybersecurity Intern for Summer 2019. My daily tasks varied according
to the projects I was working on. For those who are interested in IT and
Cybersecurity like me, some of the important tools and platforms I use on a
daily basis included Jira, Confluence, VMware Fusion (for virtual testing) and
other devOp related tools. Based on the tasks assigned to me, I would conduct
research and complete each task on Scrum methodology basis for each project.
Some of my projects included migration of the Atlassian platform, writing shell
scripts for MacBook based on NIST’s 800 publication, and migration of phone log
system and communication channels. This internship taught me a tremendous
amount of techniques and approaches. This will be a great addition to my
portfolio for future references in the professional environment.

Describe the process of obtaining your position.
When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I applied though UMBCWorks for
the internship and submitted my resume as well. A week after applying for the
position, a recruiter from the company reached out to me to set up a phone
interview. After the phone interview, an in-person interview was scheduled.
After two rounds of interviews, within a week, I heard back from the recruiter
on an email with an offer letter containing all the details of my start date,
duration, and pay rate for the internship. It was a very straightforward and
    effortless process.

What have you enjoyed the most about your
    position or organization?

I have enjoyed learning more
about a cybersecurity related environment. I had the opportunity to meet an amazing
team of fun, dedicated, and punctual people that offered me all the help that I
    needed.

How do you believe you have made an impact
    through your work?

I believe that I have made my
teams work much easier by helping them with migration, securing their data and
by saving time. Since, Quark Security is a cybersecurity organization, they
have many contracts with very well-known companies such as Lockheed Martin,
Department of Defense, Boeing. They provide cross-domain solutions and Android
support to these secured organizations. There are two main teams, the
cross-domain solution team and the android solution team and I believe that my
contribution to the projects has benefited the entire organization altogether.

What advice would you give to another student
who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

My advice to anyone would be to apply to as many
places as possible. Apply to many internship opportunities that spike your
interest. Go through as many interviews as possible but never lose hope! Don’t
forget to explore and once you find a good company, know about the company as
much as possible. Try to mingle with as many departments as possible to get to
know what kind of work they do. Also, don't be scared to ask lots of questions!
    Good luck!

Also, the Career Center is amazing and they will
provide you with all the help you need. I would highly recommend taking the
practicum workshops offered by the Career Center because those are also very
    helpful!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

STEM Mentors Needed for Baltimore City Middle School

<Tagline>Mentors Needed for Robotics Students</Tagline>

The Bmore STEM Ecosystem is initiating a pilot mentoring program for the Baltimore City Middle School Robotics program and we are in need of volunteer mentors to pair up with the students in the Middle School Robotics program. We are in search of local employees, retirees, college students and high school students to act as mentors to the middle school robotics participants. Our goal is capitalize on the youth’s interest in STEM (i.e. Robotics) and put them on an academic path to STEM careers and ultimately keep them on a STEM career path into and through High School.

Mentors will be able to engage in several activities with the students to include – assisting with coaching the robotics teams, attending Robotics events with the students, providing guidance on classes they should be taking to be prepared to enter high school and college ready to pursue STEM careers, and utilize on-line resources to guide them in career path selection. Our objective is to have 1 mentor per robotics student.

The time commitment for the mentors is expected to be about 1 hour per week. Bmore STEM will provide the mentors with training materials to facilitate potential activities with the students and educate the mentors on the course sequences the students should be following to prepare for STEM careers (e.g. completion of Algebra I in Middle School and Calculus in High School).

If you are interested or have questions about this opportunity, please contact Gino Tagatay (gptagaytay@bcps.k12.md.us).

Abstract

State‐of‐the‐art distributed‐memory computer clusters contain multicore CPUs with 16 and more cores. The second generation of the Intel Xeon Phi many‐core processor has more than 60 cores with 16 GB of high‐performance on‐chip memory. We contrast the performance of the second‐generation Intel Xeon Phi, code‐named Knights Landing (KNL), with 68 computational cores to the latest multicore CPU Intel Skylake with 18 cores. A special‐purpose code solving a system of nonlinear reaction‐diffusion partial differential equations with several thousands of point sources modeled mathematically by Dirac delta distributions serves as realistic test bed. The system is discretized in space by the finite volume method and advanced by fully implicit time‐stepping, with a matrix‐free implementation that allows the complex model to have an extremely small memory footprint. The sample application is a seven variable model of calcium‐induced calcium release (CICR) that models the interplay between electrical excitation, calcium signaling, and mechanical contraction in a heart cell. The results demonstrate that excellent parallel scalability is possible on both hardware platforms, but that modern multicore CPUs outperform the specialized many‐core Intel Xeon Phi KNL architecture for a large class of problems such as systems of parabolic partial differential equations.
