Briefly describe your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.
The Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) cares for hundreds of stray, abandoned, and surrendered dogs and cats. As a dog volunteer I focus on walking the dogs, keeping them active, and giving them the social attention they need. On an average day I will go in and first check to see if any puppies have been brought in who need to go out, then I check on dogs who are housebroken or have just been taken off of stray hold. Stray hold means that dogs that are found as strays, have a 3 day probation period where they cannot be walked or taken into care by volunteers. During this time, the owner can claim back their dog. Then after these dogs have gone out, I walk the average healthy dogs in the shelter. Some of the more active dogs I take to the play yard and have them run off-leash. After healthy dogs have been cared for, I go into the sick- area. Here I have to put on throw-away scrubs and gloves before taking each dog out.
Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.
I got this service-learning opportunity through the Shriver Center as well as through the Honor's College. I had been looking for a course for Honor's 390 which was a volunteer course. I went to the Shriver Center and asked if there were any openings at BARCS because I have heard about their work in the past and was very interested. I was then put into contact with the student coordinator. She said she did not have any more spots in the van left but would be able to provide me work on Saturdays if I could provide my own transportation. This is what I decided to do and I drive myself and a friend of mine each week to the shelter. Because there are very few dog volunteers on Saturdays, my friend and I were able to be trained upon our second week at BARCS and started work quickly.
What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?
I have enjoyed working with the different types of dogs the most while volunteering at BARCS. I find animals that are completely resilient to the way they have been treated and turn into incredible pets. I also find it wonderful to meet people who have the same passion for volunteering that I do.
How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I feel that I have made an impact through my work by giving dogs the type of attention and love they deserve. Each volunteer that the animals interact with makes them more accepting of human contact and more friendly towards people. The ultimate goal is to make them comfortable around people and make them adoptable.
What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
I would tell them to be ready for challenges but that the work is rewarding. Before I began to work at BARCS, I thought taking care of dogs would be easy. I am a huge animal person. But when I got there, I found dogs that were a bit more challenging to walk and train. However, working there longer has showed me how far animals can come and that they will find a happy and fitting home.

]]>The CBCF Emerging Leaders: US-China Study Delegation is a study abroad program designed to provide African-American students living or attending school in Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) member districts with the opportunity to experience Chinese culture and learn Mandarin during a two-week visit to China. Through this initiative, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated (CBCF) aims to promote African Americans’ interest in career and study options involving US-China relations, thereby expanding opportunities for African Americans in an era of increasing globalization.
The CBCF Emerging Leaders: US-China Study Delegation program dates are June 2, 2016 – June 20, 2016.
In 2016, one (1) group of 20 students will participate in the program. Students will take part in orientation activities in Washington, DC before leaving for China and in a debrief session in Washington, DC upon their return. Students will participate in a challenging and rewarding program during their two weeks in China that includes academic, cultural and reflection activities.
The 2016 program is open to students who meet the following criteria:
· Live OR attend school in a CBC member district. Students who live or go to school in New Jersey are all represented by a CBC member
· Enrolled in an HBCU, predominantly-black schools, or majority institutions; for community college students, must be graduating in May 2016
· Majoring in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics-related (STEM) fields, business or trade
· Completing their second, third, or fourth year of college in May 2016 based on credits earned
· Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
· Have a valid passport at the time they submit their application
· U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident of the U.S.
All of the scholars’ housing, travel and meals in China are covered by the China-US Exchange Foundation. CBCF covers participants’ housing and most of their meals during their stay in Washington, DC; CBCF also covers the scholars’ ground transportation in Washington, DC once the program has started.
Prospective applicants can apply by completing the two part application: A General Application for everyone applying to a CBCF program and Supplemental Questions specific to the China Study program.

Application developers lack tools to profile and compare the energy consumption of different software designs. This energy-optimization task is challenging because of unpredictable interactions between the application and increasingly complex power management logic. Yet, having accurate power information would allow application developers to both avoid inefficient designs and discover opportunities for new optimizations.
In this talk, I will show that it is possible to accurately measure system-level power and attribute it to application activities. I will present BattOr, a portable, easy-to-use power monitor that provides developers with a profile of the energy consumption of their designs—without modifications to hardware or software. I will show how Google developers are using BattOr to improve Chrome’s energy efficiency. I will also show how fine-grained understanding of cellular power at different signal strengths enables novel energy optimizations. Finally, I will describe my future plans to attribute system-level power to individual hardware components and to investigate opportunities presented by instrumenting every server in a data center with fine-grained power monitoring.
Aaron Schulman is a Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford working with Sachin Katti; he earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, where he was advised by Neil Spring. His research interests are in low-power embedded systems, wireless communication, and network measurement. Aaron’s research on the BattOr power monitor has been funded by Google, is being commercialized by his startup Mellow Research, and is becoming Google’s de facto standard tool for measuring the energy consumption of the Chrome web browser. For his dissertation, Aaron provided the first observations of fundamental factors that limit the reliability of the Internet’s critical last-mile infrastructure. His dissertation was selected to receive the the 2013 ACM SIGCOMM Doctoral Dissertation Award.

The Maryland Cyber Challenge, or MDC3, is held in Baltimore each year. The competition, organized by the CyberNEXS division of Leidos, provides a hands-on cybersecurity competition for participants through, among other things, a “king of the hill” style challenge. The event tests not only a team’s ability to break into a target machine, but also its ability to secure that machine from attacks by other competitors. In addition, competitors are given a forensics image of a computer, and tasked with finding hidden flags within the image.
In 2015, about 25 college and university teams qualified for the semi-finals, and eight of those teams made it to the finals. That eight includes two teams from UMBC: Cyberdawgs 1 and Cyberdawgs 2. The final round of competition began on October 28, but technical difficulties prevented the contest from finishing.
The contest resumed at noon on Saturday, February 20, 2016. The Cyberdawgs Team 1, Tyler Campbell, Josh Domangue, Chris Gardner, Anh Ho, Jacob Rust, and Julio Valcarcel took first place with 18,979 points, outscoring the winning team in the professional division by 5690 points. (No other results or point totals were released.)
The Cyber Defense Team’s meetings are open to all students that have a desire to learn hands-on cybersecurity skills, and no prior cyber experience is needed.
