V-LINC Bike Clinic was a success! A big thank you to everyone who volunteered! During the mini bike clinic on Monday, our volunteers were able to assemble three adaptive bikes for special needs children. We were even able to send a family home with theirs that day! This semester UMBC Alumni Relations is hosting a "Dinner with Strangers." The idea is simple: sit down for dinner with strangers and leave with new friends and valuable connections. Dinner with Strangers is your opportunity to eat a free, delicious meal and network with UMBC alumni in your prospective field. 

This fall, 10 students will enjoy a dinner hosted by UMBC alumnus Mr. Chris Magaha '03, Director of the Commercial Solutions for Classified Programs at the National Security Agency (NSA). The dinner is scheduled for Monday, November 30th from 6-8 p.m.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

We are looking for students with a demonstrated commitment to the health of Native American communities, and evidence of motivation to achieve the highest goals possible.

This does not require the highest grades (we do not request transcripts) or the most extensive research background (previous research experience is not required). We do require the following:

 

        • Minimum 1 year of undergraduate studies in a 4-year undergraduate degree program prior to start of program (June)
        • Demonstrated interest in careers in medicine, public health, or biomedical sciences
        • At least 1 introductory science course (can include biology or chemistry)
        • US citizen or non-citizen national with a permanent residence visa
        • Not taking the August MCAT (the time constraints of the program do not allow adequate time for studying for this important exam)
        • Can provide proof of health insurance coverage.

There is an exciting summer research opportunity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Harvard Medical School (HMS) for undergraduate students with a commitment to the health of Native American communities. Since 1994, The Four Directions Summer Research Program (FDSRP) has brought over 180 students to Boston during this time.
 
FDSRP will cover students’ travel costs to and from Boston, provide housing free of charge, and give them a stipend for the summer.
 
This is a great opportunity for students to train in the HMS environment. The application deadline is February 8, 2016 and students will be notified of their selection by the first week of March 2016.

Job Summary
The R&D internship is intended for undergraduate or graduate students studying relevant fields of study and interested in a career involving Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine, and/or Biomaterials.

R&D Interns pursue a primary project or task area developed in partnership with an ACell Principal Scientist. These projects provide interns the opportunity to grow in their capabilities and mindset while also advancing ACell’s mission. Our past interns have led projects spanning ACell’s R&D lab activities:
•    Building and evaluating new product prototypes
•    Planning and carrying out research studies in biomaterial characterization
•    Developing and optimizing new experimental techniques

These projects involve literature review, development of a project plan, and a lot of time in the lab, leading to a written report and/or presentation to ACell management. Along the way, our interns are provided chances to contribute to a variety of other R&D projects. Skills developed along the way include:
•    Mechanical testing and characterization of new materials
•    Biochemical characterization of biologic tissue
•    Cell culture and in vitro assays to evaluate biomaterials
•    Decellularization of biologic tissues
•    Pilot-scale clean room manufacturing

As a member of the research group, the R&D Intern will be trained in experimental laboratory techniques used at ACell. These methods may involve the use of hazardous biological and chemical materials as well as manual and powered cutting tools. In these duties and others, attention to safety will be required.

The R&D Intern will be expected to regularly perform at least 12 hours of work per week during the Spring academic term and 40 hours a week during the Summer. Preference will be given to interns able to work full-time for the entire internship. Start and end dates for this position are expected to range from January – August 2016.

Principal Responsibilities
•    Review existing literature and contribute to the development of project plans
•    Carry out a project plan through in-lab experimentation
•    Document experimental work, including the maintenance of an updated and complete laboratory notebook, preparation of a written completion report, and presentation of results to members of the scientific team
•    Assist laboratory members on a variety of projects, ranging from building prototypes to characterizing competitor products
•    Assist in maintaining a functional, safe, and effective laboratory
Required Education
•    Minimum of three semesters of college-level coursework towards a degree in a related science or engineering field, such as bioengineering, chemical engineering, materials science, biology, and biochemistry

Required Skills and Experience
•    Prior experience in a chemical or biological focused laboratory, not necessarily specific experience with the expected duties.
•    Experience maintaining a laboratory notebook
Preferred Skills and Experience
•    Experience with tissue engineering technologies or experience developing or refining biological implantable materials
•    Experience with one or more of the following:
o    Cell and Molecular Biology (e.g., Culturing and Passaging Cells, In Vitro assays)
o    Physical Testing (e.g., Tension/Compression, Rheology, Particle Size Analysis)
o    Biochemical Assays (e.g., ELISA, SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, Picogreen)
•    Experience in implementing scientific procedures, methods, and tools for the manufacture and/or testing of medical products

Get it recognized on your academic transcript by registering for the Career Center Intern/Co-op/Research Practicum (PRAC). Registering for PRAC provides an official record of your experience, letting future employers and graduate schools know about your hard work. 

WHAT IS PRAC?

PRAC is a zero-credit, pass/fail course that requires a few small assignments and attendance at two professional development workshops. It is designed to help you grow as a professional and support you throughout your experience. Check out this short PRAC orientation video for details.  PRAC is FREE for all student

HOW TO REGISTER:

Log in to UMBCworks and follow these easy steps. You will be asked to attach a letter or email from your employer verifying that you will be/are working there this spring. This can be a Word document, PDF, or screenshot. Please register online by June 30. Retroactive enrollments for past experiences are not permitted.

Note: We are also holding a PRAC enrollment drop-in day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10 in the Career Center.  Simply stop in and a coordinator will assist you with your registration.

EARNING CREDIT FOR YOUR EXPERIENCE:

Although PRAC is zero-credit, you may be able to couple it with an academic internship or research course, allowing you to earn credits for your experience. On the registration form, you can indicate whether you're interested in this option. Some courses require PRAC enrollment. Check out your options for earning credit.

The Girl Scouts of Central Maryland is doing its part to inspire girls to pursue STEAM careers by organizing a Women in STEAM conference for middle school girls on Saturday, November 14, 2015 from 10am to 5pm!
 
Volunteers are needed in the following locations:
 
1. Expo Hall (volunteers needed from 10:30am-1:00pm) - BWS will have a table with activities (snap circuits and puff mobiles) for girls and information about SWE. Girls and parents will have the opportunity to visit the Expo Hall for 45 minutes (11:15-12 and 12-12:45).
 
2. Workshop - TechBridge Activity (volunteers are needed from 2:45pm-4:00pm) - BWS will be hosting a TechBridge Activity during the last workshop for the girls. Volunteers will be needed to assist the girls with the activities and talk to them about our engineering careers.
