PAID INTERN OPPORTUNITIES THIS SPRING

The Shattuck Family Internship Program for Entrepreneurship Innovation and Social Change prepares UMBC students for the rigors and rewards of entrepreneurship and social innovation.  This program places highly-motivated students from diverse backgrounds in mentored internships to better prepare them to launch nonprofit or social ventures.  Students get training and experience to empower them to become the next generation of social entrepreneurs–working largely in the not-for-profit world, developing and delivering innovative solutions to some of our region’s most urgent social problems.

Internships last one semester (15 weeks) and students will work, on average, 8 to 10 hours per week.  Students receive a stipend of $1,500 toward their compensation.  In addition to the internship, students engage in projects and activities that further expose them to the social entrepreneurial mindset.

BONUS:  The Shattuck Interns can apply to become Family Entrepreneurial Scholars/Fellows which provides selected interns who successfully completed their placements, and have demonstrated particularly strong proclivity to become social entrepreneurs with awards up to $5,000.  The awards can be used as academic scholarships, or as “seed funding” to launch new ventures or community-based social entrepreneurship projects.

Why Participate?
- Earn a competitive stipend of $1,500 plus an opportunity to potentially earn credit and obtain up to $5,000 for a scholarship or seed funding for a new venture or community-based social entrepreneurship projects
- Gain valuable experience in your career field by interning 120 hours over the course of the semester (8-10 hours per week)
- Be exposed to the knowledge, skills, and mindset required to successfully launch and manage a nonprofit/social venture
- Develop a network of contacts in the nonprofit community for future references and opportunities
- Apply classroom knowledge in a realistic work environment and apply lessons learned in the workplace to academic coursework

- Have completed a minimum of 30 credits with a GPA of 3.0 or above, and possess an interest in social change.  ALL majors are encouraged to apply.

The 2016 FBI Internship application window is OPEN and closes November 24, 2015

The FBI has opened the call for applications for the 2016 Honors and Cyber Internship programs and launched a new application process. All intern candidates must go to www.fbijobs.gov, register and complete a profile, and then select their profile to be added to the Intern Talent Network by November 24, 2015.

After selecting the Intern Talent Network, intern candidates must attach their résumés and answer suitability questions. Candidates are strongly encouraged to review the instructions for navigating the Intern Talent Network (attached) before beginning the process. Only those candidates in the network by November 24 will be considered for the 2016 program.

All educational backgrounds will be considered for the internships. To qualify for the Honors or Cyber Internship Programs, candidates must:

• Be a second-semester freshmen or above; candidates cannot have graduated before June 13, 2016;
• Be available 40 hours per week from June 13, 2016 to August 19, 2016 (10 weeks); and
• Have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA. (*if you do not meet this requirement but speak more than one language or think you would be a great candidate anyway, Give it a try! )

Soldiers on the battlefield and first-responders in conflict zones will soon be able to save lives by using a portable, briefcase-sized tool that rapidly manufactures medicines. Govind Rao, professor of chemical and biochemical engineering and director of the Center for Advanced Sensor Technology (CAST) at UMBC, leads the research team behind this innovation. At the recent Bioprocess International conference, he called the system “beyond revolutionary,” reports BioPharma.

“Welcome to the Betty Crocker world of bioprocessing,” said Rao. “Within a few hours you are expressing a high quality protein.”

The product emerged from concerns that current methods for getting pharmaceutical supplies to battlefields, often requiring airdrops, needed to be replaced with point-of-care technology. The project is a collaborative effort among multiple academic institutions and corporations, and was funded by a $7.9 million grant from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. In the future, Rao hopes this technology can be applied to producing low-cost vaccines.

Eligibility and Requirements:

• Undergraduate students with a genuine interest in cancer research, cumulative GPA >3.0, and strong letters of recommendation as reflected in their application packages, are eligible.
• Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.

·         Underrepresented minorities are encouraged to apply.

·         Twenty internships are awarded each summer; applications for these slots are reviewed by committee and evaluated on a competitive basis

·         The NSIP is a full time ten-week commitment beginning in the last week of May that is not compatible with concurrent outside employment or classes; see website for this summer’s program dates.

     Subsistence Allowance and Housing:

·         Interns receive a subsistence allowance of $4,000 for the 10-week internship.

·         A travel allowance of up to $500 is provided for travel to and from Baltimore.

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 17 participating DOE laboratories/facilities. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.

The SULI program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science’s, Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) in collaboration with the DOE laboratories/facilities.

Applications for the SULI program are solicited annually for three separate internship terms. Internship appointments are 10 weeks in duration for the Summer Term (May through August) or 16 weeks in duration for the Fall (August through December) and Spring (January through May) Terms. Each DOE laboratory/facility offers different research opportunities; not all DOE laboratories/facilities offer internships during the Fall and Spring Terms.

Meet Paul,
He is an Animation and Interactive Media major who is currently creating his own video game.

His game, Deliverance brings together many technologies to capture aspects of real life in an immersive world. The project captured live performances of musicians and original choreographed dancers which Paul then translated to his fabricated game characters by filming the performances from multiple angles. The video was then used to manually animate three-dimensional characters created according to drawing concepts in a computer program.

Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) have become increasingly important in general purpose high performance computing, both because of the enormous computing power of these highly parallel processors as well as the evolution of general purpose software APIs that provide a domain-independent software environment. Graphics applications are also being redesigned to take advantage of this general GPU access, both for design of new algorithms as well as optimization and specialization of existing ones. This talk will explore how having access to the general purpose compute API in DirectX 11 allows us to design a tessellation algorithm for a specific use case that has superior performance and quality to the fixed-function tessellation hardware.

John Kloetzli is a graphics programmer at Firaxis Games. He is an alumnus of UMBC, having received a BS in 2006 majoring in Computer Science with a minor in both Mathematics and Philosophy, and a MS in Computer Science in 2008. He has worked at Firaxis since 2006 and is part of the team that produces the popular Civilization game series.
