The annual CWIT Spring Into Leadership event is just over a
month away and we could use the help of a few Affiliates in the rest of
the planning. We will have a planning committee meeting from 12-12:50pm on Wednesday, March 12 (one week from today) in ITE 456.
We will also have a planning committee on Wednesday, March 26, from 12-12:50pm in ITE 456. If we need one more meeting after that, we will schedule it later.
In
these meetings, we will decide on how the networking piece of the event
should work, whether you think we should have a theme to the event this
year, what kinds of topics you think our keynote speaker should address
in her talk, ideas for an interactive piece we could work with the
speaker to incorporate in her talk, etc.
Even if you can only make one of the two scheduled dates, we
encourage you to attend the one you can make; everyone's input will be
valuable in making these decisions for the event.
Spring Into Leadership will be held on Tuesday, April 8, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the UC Ballroom. You may RSVP at the website attached to this post to attend this event. For the planning committee meetings, no RSVP is necessary.

Meet Stephen. He is a Computer Engineering and a current URA (Undergraduate Research Award) Scholar. His research will study the development of a unique underwater signal reflection-enabled, acoustic-based localization scheme that employs both a line-of-sight and surface-reflected non-line-of-sight ranging information to locate undefined reference points.
How did you find your mentor for your research, scholarship, or artistic project? Dr. Younis taught my introductory Computer Engineering class where he spoke of his own research. I toured his lab the following semester and quickly began to involve myself in his lab.
How did you know this was the project you wanted to do? Honestly, I didn’t know this was a project that I wanted to do, yet after speaking with my mentor I felt that this would be a perfect field to begin working in based on the classes I had taken and what I hadn’t taken yet.
Is this your first independent research project? No, I previously worked on 2 different research projects. The first was at Montana State University during the summer following my sophomore year. This research dealt with radio beam-form transmissions and the automation of radio equipment. My second research project was conducted at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, where I was working with robotics.
How much time do you put into it? I work roughly 10hrs/week during the school semester, and I worked 40hrs/week over the summer.
How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program? I had seen numerous student profiles listing participation with the URA program and I felt that the URA was just what I needed to help fund my research.
What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA? I applied as a junior, so I had already had all my basic computer engineering classes, as well as most of the electrical engineering classes needed for this type of research.
Was the application difficult to do? The application was not difficult at all. As long as you have some background within your research area, the application is very straightforward.
How much did your mentor help you with the application? My mentor answered questions that I wasn’t able to, and also provided me with draft fixes so that my answers were as accurate as possible.
What has been the hardest part about your research? Starting the code development of the MATLAB test bed. After hearing how complicated the simulation has to be, along with the amount of mathematics involved, I felt somewhat intimidated with what we would have to create. So far the simulation has been going well, and is already providing great results
What was the most unexpected thing? The most unexpected thing has been the amount of time required to accomplish the tasks at hand. I have spent a lot more time in lab then I had originally thought I would be spending.
How does your research relate to your work in other classes? My research entails underwater localization, which by itself is something I have never had a class on. The math involved however, along with the circuitry, programing, and paper writing all relates back to classes I have had within the Computer Engineering department.
What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research? First, make sure you have the time to dedicate to working in a lab. When you are not in the lab collecting data, you will be conducting background research, writing papers and logs, emailing data back and forth, and keeping a constant communication with your mentor(s). Also, make sure the subject you are working within is something that you can see yourself working in further into your future. I have spoken with multiple researchers and companies that I may have opportunities to work with after I attain my degree, and it is all thanks to the research involvement I have now.
What are your career goals? After I obtain my Bachelor of Science, I would like to attain both an electrical engineering graduate degree and an engineering license. I would like to start my career within the private energy sector as an engineer, where I hope to work with the nationwide energy grid.
Did you transfer to UMBC from another institution? Where?
No, I have been with UMBC since my freshman year.

The UMBC Council of Computing Majors will hold its first hands-on Raspberry Pi workshop from 2:00-4:00 this Friday, March 7, in ITE240.
The Raspberry Pi is a $35 credit-card-sized, single-board computer that runs a version of Unix. Originally developed for teaching computer programming to children, it is now being used in many useful and exciting applications, from near-space weather balloons to baby monitors to media servers. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.
The initial workshop will cover the Raspberry Pi, its Raspbian Unix OS, and how to program it using Python for real-world applications. There will be 20 Pi computers for participants to use. The workshop is designed so freshman and non-computer science majors can attend and participate. If you know anyone who would be interested in attending, please send them the link and information!
Space is limited, so sign up to reserve a seat. Intermediate and advanced workshops will follow later in the semester. See the Pi FAQ for general information on the Pi and Raspbian for information on its operating system.

Learning and Optimization for Complex Dynamic Networks: The
Cases of Future Power Systems and Cognitive Wireless Networks

With enormous growth in sensing and communication capabilities as well as processing power to analyze collected data, we are witnessing exciting opportunities in diverse disciplines to study complex interactions of networked entities. The overarching theme is to explore cutting-edge computational intelligence tools from signal processing, machine learning, optimization, and control to make sense of amassed data and exploit complex interactions to make significant real-world impacts. In this talk, I will make cases for two prime examples, namely, future power systems and cognitive wireless networks. The role of contemporary tools including online learning, sparse and low-dimensional models, distributed and robust algorithms, will be emphasized.
Seung-Jun Kim received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea in 1996 and 1998, respectively, and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2005, all in electrical engineering. From 2005 to 2008, he worked for NEC Laboratories America in Princeton, New Jersey, as a Research Staff Member. He is currently with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Digital Technology Center at the University of Minnesota, where he is a Research Associate Professor and a Research Associate. His research interests lie in applying signal processing, optimization, and machine learning techniques to various application domains including wireless communication and networking and smart power grids.

Learning and Optimization for Complex Dynamic Networks: The
Cases of Future Power Systems and Cognitive Wireless Networks

With enormous growth in sensing and communication capabilities as well as processing power to analyze collected data, we are witnessing exciting opportunities in diverse disciplines to study complex interactions of networked entities. The overarching theme is to explore cutting-edge computational intelligence tools from signal processing, machine learning, optimization, and control to make sense of amassed data and exploit complex interactions to make significant real-world impacts. In this talk, I will make cases for two prime examples, namely, future power systems and cognitive wireless networks. The role of contemporary tools including online learning, sparse and low-dimensional models, distributed and robust algorithms, will be emphasized.
Seung-Jun Kim received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea in 1996 and 1998, respectively, and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2005, all in electrical engineering. From 2005 to 2008, he worked for NEC Laboratories America in Princeton, New Jersey, as a Research Staff Member. He is currently with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Digital Technology Center at the University of Minnesota, where he is a Research Associate Professor and a Research Associate. His research interests lie in applying signal processing, optimization, and machine learning techniques to various application domains including wireless communication and networking and smart power grids.
