<Title>Researcher of the Week: Celia Drew</Title>

    <p>Meet Celia.  She is a Mathematics/Statistics and Information Systems major.  Last summer, she was a participant in the SURF program at the <a href="http://www.umbc.edu/undergrad_ed/research/opportunities/nist.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Institute of Standards and Technology</a> (NIST) in Gaithersburg.  Her current research interests include the emerging field of "Big Data" and cyber-security.</p>
    <p><strong>How did you find out that you could do research in your field in the summer?</strong><br> I learned about it as a <a href="http://www.cwit.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Women in Technology</a> (CWIT) Scholar. Janet McGlynn of the Office of Undergraduate Research came to one of our seminar classes to tell us about the NIST fellowships. <br><br><strong>How did you know that research at NIST was what you wanted to do?</strong><br> I really wanted to see what it was like to work in a federal lab.<br><br><strong>Did you apply to other places? </strong><br> I also applied to several Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Math or Statistics at universities around the country. I was accepted to one of those at Michigan State in Probability and Discrete Math.<br><br><strong>Was the application difficult to do? Did you have help with this?</strong> <br> It was easier than I expected. The Office of Undergraduate Education holds workshops to help you prepare a personal statement about which of the NIST labs and projects might be a good fit for you.<br><br><strong>What was your summer research project?</strong> <br> I ran computer simulations looking at how cell phone networks could keep up better when people are on the go and the base stations to which they are connected keep changing. My work helped to measure the performance of mobile devices as the connections pass among different size towers, like from the giant ones that serve part of a city to the little base station at somebody's home. We were looking for the best mix of coverage areas to minimize outages and keep the devices from inefficiently “ping-ponging” from one station to the next.<br><br><strong>Who was your mentor for this project? </strong><br> Dr. David W. Griffith, an electrical engineer in NIST’s Information Technology Lab. He was so nice and helpful, and his daughter, Indira, is now a freshman at UMBC!<br><br><strong>How much time do you put into this work?</strong> <br> I worked on the project full-time for 11 weeks.<br><br><strong>Were you paid? Where did you live?</strong> <br> The NIST fellows were paid $500 a week, and 140 of us stayed for free at the Hyatt House in Gaithersburg. It was so much fun hanging out with students from all over the country. We’d have lunch together at NIST, and we’d all head into D.C. or to the beach on the weekend. <br><br><strong>What academic background did you have before you started?</strong> <br> I had taken Calculus II and III as a freshman along with Discrete Structures and a computer programming class. <br><br><strong>How did you learn what you needed to know for this project?</strong><br> I had never worked with MATLAB, a computing language that helps you run simulations and visualize lots of data, so I watched videos and looked at textbooks to get started.<br><br><strong>What was the hardest part about your research?</strong><br> There were times when it was hard to figure out the coding I needed. But Dr. Griffith was always willing to make suggestions if I hit a snag.<br><br><strong>How does this research relate to your course work at UMBC? </strong><br> Matlab is one of the main programs used for mathematical calculations, so it’s something I needed to learn. I’m already using it this fall in my Linear Algebra class! <br><br><strong>What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research? </strong><br>Recommendations from professors are crucial. I was lucky enough to get recommendations from two terrific teachers, Dr. Brian Dean and Dr. E.F. Charles LaBerge. Be sure you get to know some of your professors right from the start. <br><br><strong>What are your career goals?</strong><br> I am interested in the new field of “Big Data,” which combines math, statistics, and computer knowledge to analyze huge amounts of data. Google and Facebook created this kind of work, and now government agencies and companies like General Electric are looking for breakthroughs of their own in this area. I’m also interested in cyber-security, which is another rapidly growing field.<br><br><strong>Do you now live on campus or commute to UMBC? </strong><br> I’m from Montclair, N.J., just outside New York, and I live on campus.</p>

<Title>Come Learn about the National Archives Spring Internship!</Title>

    <p>Do you have at least intermediate coding skills in Java?  Are you interested in an extremely <strong>flexible</strong> internship this Spring  in which you can perform on campus or at home?</p>
    <p><strong>National Archives and Records Administration is hosting an INFORMATION SESSION THURSDAY, December 5 from 5pm- 6pm  in Commons 318 to share more about their great internship program.</strong></p>
    <p><br></p>
    <p>The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is responsible for preservation of the permanently valuable records of the federal government.  With the advent of an electronic government, the records that are created are being transferred to NARA in a variety of complex and challenging formats.  NARA is looking for assistance in developing a practical set of software tools, created through the use of best practices and agile and rapid development methods,  which can be used by them and by all federal agencies to prepare such records for transfer, further processing, and preservation.</p>
    <p><br></p>
    <p>Well-defined requirements will be developed by NARA IT specialists, and the resulting software written by students will be tested by experienced NARA users.  The experience will encompass translating these user requirements into practical, production-ready code.  The applications that will be developed include a wide variety of interesting projects. In addition, the experience  will offer the ability to gain experience in various aspects of the software development lifecycle, including source code management and adjudicating user feedback in version releases, all in a real-world, production environment. </p>
    <p><span>Consider this unique opportunity to polish your software development skills while you participate in this important project that will help preserve the electronic records of the nation.</span></p>

    <div class="html-content">There is an exciting opportunity for undergraduates to participate in a research fellowship at the University of Cincinnati during the summer of 2014. The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), a joint initiative of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, is proud to train the next generation of physician-scientist leaders.  The MSTP prepares students for a career in academic medicine, with a combined MD/PhD degree. <br><br>The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) with the MSTP gives students and opportunity to explore the MD/PhD track.  Fellows will spend approximately 10 weeks working on an independent research project in their areas of interest. They will also be paired with a physician to shadow; giving fellows a chance to combine the research and clinical sides of medicine.  Fellows will be awarded a $4000 stipend.  <br><br>As part of the MSTP program, fellows will have the opportunity to interact with current students and participate in professional development activities. Such workshops, including journal clubs and speaker series are designed to give fellows a better understanding of the training of an MD/PhD student.  There will also be social activities for all summer fellows to participate in, getting to know one another and the dynamic city of Cincinnati. <br><br>Students like yours: creative, driven leaders, thrive in our program.     <p>Project: IMHOTEP is an eleven-week internship (May 19, 2014 – August 1, 2014) designed to increase the knowledge and skills of student trainees in biostatistics, epidemiology, and occupational safety and health. The program begins with two weeks of intense educational training. The purpose of this training is to equip interns with the academic coursework and information necessary to complete the program. During the following eight weeks, interns conduct public health research with experts at the CDC, NIMR, Academic Institutions, State Agencies, and various other public health agencies and community based organizations. Interns also receive a $3,500 stipend, lodging, and travel to and from their site location and city of origin.</p>
    <p>Applications are due <strong>January 31, 2014 by 11:59PM</strong> and can be found at the link below. The following items must be submitted by the application deadline.</p>

    <p>As requested in the last seminar, we will devote this seminar to stepping through the complete <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shor's_algorithm" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Shor algorithm</a> (from beginning to end) to factor the “enormous” integer 21. This talk will based on the example found at the beginning of the following paper.</p>
    <blockquote><p><a href="http://xxx.lanl.gov/abs/quant-ph/0201095" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Quantum hidden subgroup algorithms: A mathematical perspective</a>, AMS CONM, vol. 305, (2002), 139 – 202.</p></blockquote>
    <p>Samuel J. Lomonaco is a professor at the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering of the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He is internationally known for his many contributions in mathematics and in computer science. His research interests span a wide range of subjects from knot theory, algebraic and differential topology to algebraic coding theory, quantum computation, and symbolic computation. In quantum cryptography, he has shown how quantum information theory can be used to gain a better understanding of eavesdropping with quantum entanglement. In quantum computation, he has shown how Lie groups can be used to solve problems arising in the study of quantum entanglement. In 2000 Professor Lomonoco organized the first American Mathematical Society short course on quantum computation.</p>

    <p>Modern digital forensics tools are largely based on the recovery and analysis of files. This talk explores how identity information such as email addresses, credit card numbers, and other of information can be more efficiently found using bulk data analysis, and how results are significantly improved through the use of optimistic decompression. Together, these techniques can find important information on computer media that are ignored by the majority of today’s digital forensics tools.</p>
    <p>This talk presents the results of a study of roughly 5000 hard drives purchased on the secondary market and shows how different kinds of data formats can be traced to different kinds of privacy leaks and coding errors. It shows how the results were generated using <a href="http://www.forensicswiki.org/wiki/Bulk_extractor" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">bulk_extractor</a>, an easy-to-use open source digital forensics tool. Finally, it shows how bulk_extractor was extended to detect data obscured with a simple steganographic technique (XOR 255), and how a subsequence re-analysis of the research corpus found significant use of the technique in commercial software, malware, and by at least one computer criminal.</p>
    <p>Dr. <a href="http://simson.net/page/Main_Page" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Simson L. Garfinkel</a> is an Associate Professor at the Naval Postgraduate School. Based in Arlington VA, Garfinkel’s research interests include digital forensics, usable security, data fusion, information policy and terrorism. He holds six US patents for his computer-related research and has published dozens of research articles on security and digital forensics.</p>
    <p>Garfinkel is the author or co-author of fourteen books on computing. He is perhaps best known for his book Database Nation: The Death of Privacy in the 21st Century. Garfinkel’s most successful book, Practical UNIX and Internet Security (co-authored with Gene Spafford), has sold more than 250,000 copies and been translated into more than a dozen languages since the first edition was published in 1991.</p>
    <p>Garfinkel received three Bachelor of Science degrees from MIT in 1987, a Master’s of Science in Journalism from Columbia University in 1988, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT in 2005.</p>
