Cloud Forensics and its Many Challenges

In this presentation, we present a challenge question for today’s cyber experts, cyber scientists, and cyber analysts. Does Locard’s Exchange Principle apply in digital forensics? The dramatic increase in cybercrime and the repeated cyber intrusions into critical infrastructure demonstrate the need for improved security. The Executive Office of the President noted on May 12, 2011 “cyber threat is one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation.” We believe addressing whether or not Locard’s Exchange Principle applies to digital forensics is a fundamental question that can guide or limit the scientific search for digital evidence.

Locard’s Exchange Principle is often stated in forensics publications “every contact leaves a trace…” Essentially Locard’s Exchange Principle is applied to crime scenes in which the perpetrator(s) of a crime comes into contact with the scene. The perpetrator(s) will both bring something into the scene, and leave with something from the scene. In the cyber world, the perpetrator may or may not come in physical contact with the crime scene, thus, this brings a new facet to crime scene analysis. According to the World of Forensic Science, Locard’s publications make no mention of an “exchange principle,” although he did make the observation “Il est impossible au malfaiteur d’agir avec l’intensité que suppose l’action criminelle sans laisser des traces de son passage.” (It is impossible for a criminal to act, especially considering the intensity of a crime, without leaving traces of this presence.)

The term “principle of exchange” first appears in Police and Crime-Detection, in 1940, and was adapted from Locard’s observations. The field of digital forensics can be strictly defined as “the application of computer science and investigative procedures for a legal purpose involving the analysis of digital evidence after proper search authority, chain of custody, validation with mathematics, use of validated tools, repeatability, reporting, and possible expert presentation. (Zatyko, 2007).” Furthermore, digital evidence is defined as information stored or transmitted in binary form that may be relied on in court. (National Institute of Justice, 2004). However, digital forensics tools and techniques have also been used by cyber analysts and researchers to conduct media analysis, compile damage assessments, build timelines, and determine attribution. According to the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center’s training program, cyber analysts require knowledge on how network intrusions occur, how various logs are created, what is electronic evidence, how electronic artifacts are forensically gathered, and the ability to analyze data to produce comprehensive reports and link analysis charts.

Our hypothesis is that Locard’s Exchange Principle does apply to cyber crimes involving computer networks such as identity theft, electronic bank fraud, or denial of service attacks, even if the perpetrator does not need to physically come in contact with the crime scene. Although the perpetrator may make virtual contact with the crime scene through the use of a proxy machine, we believe he will still “leave a trace” and digital evidence will exist. This presentation will explore with audience input “where in the cloud is digital evidence found” and new ways it can lead to attribution. It will explore what new standards and techniques are needed to find these digital traces. Read ahead information can be found at here.

Ken Zatyko was previously the Director of the Department of Defense Computer Forensics Laboratory where he led the largest accredited, internationally recognized, leading-edge computer forensics laboratory located in Maryland. For several months, Mr. Zatyko has been working with NIST on a working group to further standards and technology to solve cloud forensics challenges. As an assistant to the Louis Vuitton's Corporate Events Director, I am spending my summer working on events for the San Francisco-based Louis Vuitton Cup.  I work on each and every detail of our numerous events.  From parties to boat rides to guest transfers, I create and simplify the necessary spreadsheets and documents.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

Helping plan events is the most stressful yet rewarding job I've ever done. The weeks, then days, leading up to events are insanely stressful and busy.  However, the feeling of completion cannot be beaten.  This weekend we are hosting a party for over 700 guests, most of which are not local, meaning I have to help arrange transportation, food, side-events, and lodging.  I not only adore this job because of its level of difficulty, but especially because of the relief and satisfaction of having planned and executed a successful event.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another opportunity?

Louis Vuitton, as the world’s top luxury goods company, offers me more opportunities to make valuable contacts than I would have anywhere else.  This experience has also demonstrated the high value of a positive relationship with an employer; a great recommendation is an enormous piece of any job application.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Networking is key.  When you meet someone, get their name or their card and be sure to follow up!  Sending an email within a day of making his or her acquaintance is a sure way to remind the person who you are and why you're worth remembering.

How do you see your experience as meaningful? This might involve skills you've gained, information you've learned, mentors you've connected with, or projects you've completed.

My experience has and continues to be hugely meaningful, as it has helped to show me the corporate world from a very different perspective.  This job has taught me the meaning of hard work, diligence, thoroughness, and the value of a positive attitude, all of which are especially relevant as I prepare to enter the workforce full time.

Meet Christine. She is a history major and current Undergraduate Research Award (URA) Scholar. Her research examines the Lost Colony of Roanoke as an historical and cultural phenomenon, specifically looking into the origin of the Dare Stones in order to define the root of the Lost Colony’s appeal to Americans and as a part of North Carolinian folklore. 

How did you find your mentor for your research project?
I had taken Dr. Bouton’s 342 history class on the American Revolution as a freshman and loved the passion he had for American history. When I began looking for a mentor, he was one of the first professors who came to mind; I knew he would have invaluable insight into not only the research process, but into the specific research I hoped to carry out.

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?
The Lost Colony is a story I grew up with, having spent much of my time growing up at the Outer Banks, North Carolina. During a stay there September of 2012, I visited Manteo and was intrigued even more by the mystery of the missing colonists. Interestingly enough, however, few people I spoke to outside of North Carolina had ever heard of the story – and as a born and bred Southerner, and an historian as well, I knew I had to do what I could to help preserve not only the legacy of the Lost Colonists, but their continued influence through myth, legend, and fact upon the American conscience.

Is this your first independent research project?
This is my first funded independent research; however, I’m simultaneously continuing to do research on Civil War-era Virginian plantations that grew out of a history class taken during my sophomore year at UMBC.

Do you get course credit for this work? How much time do you put into it?
I am not conducting this research for course credit. I spend about 20 to 30 hours a week on the project; during late July, I am spending ten days traveling to Manteo, North Carolina, as well as visiting Brenau University, Emory University, and East Carolina University in order to interview folklorists, historians, and locals of the Manteo (originally Roanoke) area.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?
I was aware of the URA program through attending the URCAD presentations each spring.
