Sustainability
Outreach and Communications Intern:
Intern will report to
Sustainability Coordinator. The position will be 8 hours per week. Hours may
vary to accommodate meetings, events, and interviews. Additional tasks may be
assigned. Intern must demonstrate evidence of interest and background in sustainability
and must feel comfortable reaching out to professionals, peers, and faculty.
Intern must be a current UMBC student. Please submit a cover letter detailing: 1)
why this position interests you 2) what related skills and experiences you
possess 3) any other groups, activities, jobs or time commitments you are
currently engaged in by September 26th.
The sustainability
outreach and communications intern will assist in developing communication outreach
around the following topics in coordination with staff, groups, and committees
on campus:
Sustainability

Energy
Conservation Efforts
Transportation
Research
and Education
Recycling,
Waste, and Compost

Professor Jian Chen receives NIST grant for immersive metrology research
Professor Jian Chen received a research award from the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) Measurement Science and Engineering research grant program to discover new immersive metrology, visualization, and analysis tools for interacting with and understanding multi-valued volumes of large scientific data in immersive display environments.
The research will explore new approaches to integrate scientific and information visualization, optimize information access and precise measurement to recommend good default visualization, study natural and intuitive input modalities including gestural and handheld 3D inputs, and synthesize visualizations to address complex data analysis workflow. The efficacy and insights of these scientific methods will be validated in close collaboration with engineering scientists at NIST.
The research is significant because the methods will be able to address problems in three independent scientific applications at NIST: suspension rheology, body area network and tissue engineering. It will also make possible new forms of scientific research by developing new immersive analysis capabilities, integrating new approaches into experimental research, and for the first time, creating new human-computer interaction techniques to query both scientific and information visualizations to leverage human intelligence.
The award will provide nearly $440,000 over the next five years to support Professor Chen and her students in the DaVinCI (Data Visualization, Computing, and Interaction) lab working on the project.

Thermal light N-qubits

2:30-4:00 Tuesday, 1 October 2013, ITE 325b
This talk will discuss a few recent experiments on Nth-order interference of N independent and incoherent thermal fields from their intensity fluctuation correlation measurement. The observed interference is similar to that of entangled states. These experiments have demonstrated the possibility of producing N-qubits from N incoherent thermal fields.
Yanhua Shih received his B.S. degree in theoretical physics from Northwestern University of China in 1981, and his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1987. He joined the Faculty of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in 1989 and established the Quantum Optics Program at UMBC. He is currently Professor of Physics at UMBC. His research interests include fundamental problems of quantum theory and general relativity.

Sustainability Outreach Internship @ UMBC
PAID, on-campus opportunity
Sustainability Outreach and Communications Intern:
Intern will report to Sustainability Coordinator. The position will be 8 hours per week. Hours may vary to accommodate meetings, events, and interviews. Additional tasks may be assigned.
Intern must demonstrate evidence of interest and background in sustainability and must feel comfortable reaching out to professionals, peers, and faculty. Intern must be a current UMBC student.

The sustainability outreach and communications intern will assist in
developing communication and outreach efforts on the following topics
in coordination with staff, groups, and committees on campus under the
direction of the Sustainability Coordinator:
Sustainability Related Accomplishments and Champions
Energy Conservation Efforts
Transportation
Research and Education
Recycling, Waste, and Compost
Desired skills and qualifications:
Strong writing and communication skills
Strong organizational and time management skills
Familiarity with or willingness to learn HMTL, wordpress, and understanding of basic web design
Ability to work independently
Creativity and design skills
Related coursework in related area such as Environmental Studies, Communications and Design
Awareness of environmental issues
Involvement in campus sustainability
Examples of Tasks and Responsibilities:
Website:
- Increase number of hits to UMBC Website and track analytics
- Develop, format, update and edit web content
Events:
- Event planning and logistics
- Assisting with activities including tabling, coordinating sign-up sheets, pledges, and photo booths
Writing:
- Assist with writing press releases, articles and event summaries
- Assist with conduct interviews and drafting articles
Design:
- Assist with posters, designs and fliers
Social Media:
- Assist with drafting updates to myUMBC and Facebook Events Calendar
- Assist with creating and posting spotlights
- Assist with posting photos and updates following events
- Expanding followers on myUMBC and social media
Photography:
- Assist with taking photographs and editing, organizing and uploading content

Joining a corporate office for the first time is often intimidating. You may be regarded as the “new kid” for months (or until another new employee is hired).
This is no reason to lose your confidence, however. Your employer hired you because they felt you would add value to the company – and you will!
Succeeding in the corporate world is a game, and you can win with these 5 strategies (and by avoiding some common mistakes):
1. Be Mindful of Your Actions
Always show people your most confident side and never discount your ideas. While always maintaining a collaborative and willing-to-learn attitude, stand up for yourself.
Mistakes to avoid:
- Polling before making a decision
- Sharing too much personal information
- Needing to be liked
- Being overly concerned with offending others
2. Keep a Success-oriented Mindset
Being new to a company can be overwhelming, but never lose your confidence in yourself. You are great at what you do, that is why you are there. Take advantage of the possibilities your company can offer.

- Setting high, unrealistic standards for yourself

After all, their position is the one you ultimately want to have, right? This goes beyond the over-used “dress for the job you want” advice, however. You must consistently exhibit the drive and professionalism of a higher level than your current position… emphasis on “consistently”.

- Failing to pause or reflect before answering questions
5. Control How Your Character and Work Ethic Are Perceived
Your response to actions occurring around the office and feedback received from colleagues shows a lot about your character and work ethic. Although negative feedback is criticism, taking it constructively can only help you grow.

- Internalizing messages
- Tolerating inappropriate behavior
- Biding your time instead of taking action
- Putting the needs of others before your own

Meet a DEI: Saniya Chaudhry
Bio:
Saniya Chaudhry is a current sophomore studying Biology. She plans on graduating UMBC and entering pharmacy school and getting her PharmD, possibly do a residency after. In addition to being a DEI, she is a certified pharmacy technician, and events coordinator of the Pre Pharmacy Society. She enjoys spending time with her family, sleeping, singing, listening to music, and eating. She loves to learn new things and is a very curious person. This year, she hopes to open people’s hearts and minds and gain knowledge as well.
Q. What made you get involved with The Mosaic Center as a Diversity Educator Intern?
I wanted to try something new and learn about different people's perspectives on issues.
Q. What might someone be surprised to know about you?
When I was little, I invented another planet called Weird-O-World and used to go around giving speeches about how awesome it was.....I was a strange kid. Also, I am a shopaholic.
Q. When you aren’t performing DEI duties, what are you most likely doing?
I am most likely in class, at work, listening to music, eating, or sleeping. That sums up my life.
Q. How would (someone) describe you?
Someone close to me would describe me as hard working, and caring (I hope).
Q. What do you wish other people knew about The Mosaic Center?
It is a public space, you can come in and eat lunch, do homework or just relax.
Q. What would you say are some of your strongest beliefs about diversity?
Diversity is something to be proud of, that a bunch of people with different beliefs or even appearances can live and cooperate with each other.
Q. What's your personal philosophy on what should be done about promoting communal diversity and inclusion?
It should be our duty as human beings to make others feel a part of the community and respect who they are, and try not to change them. Everyone has something to offer.
