Quantum Computer Compilers

Quantum computing is an exciting emerging field that offers great potential for next generation information processing but also presents great scientific and engineering challenges. Assuming that someday we will be able to build scalable and reliable quantum computers, we will need to create programming languages and compilers that will allow programmers to harness quantum phenomena. In this talk, Alfred Aho will look at quantum computing from a compiler writer's perspective and discuss some of the formidable challenges that face quantum computer compilers.

Alfred Aho is the Lawrence Gussman Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University. He received a B.A.Sc. in Engineering Physics from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering/ Computer Science from Princeton University. Prior to his current position, he served as vice president of the Computing Sciences Research Center at Bell Labs, the lab that invented UNIX, C and C++. He is the "A" in AWK, a widely used pattern-matching language. His current research interests include programming languages, compilers, algorithms, software engineering and quantum computing. He has won the IEEE John von Neumann Medal and is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a Fellow of the AAAS, ACM, Bell Labs and IEEE. In 2003 he received the Great Teacher Award from the Society of Columbia Graduates.

Role description:

As a Systems Analyst intern in the IT department within Mercy Health Services, you will have the opportunity to blend your technical expertise, management skills and interest in healthcare informatics to contribute to the organization’s success.  You will work with members of the IT team to implement solutions and participate in special projects.  In this role, you be exposed to multiple areas of the hospital and meet with IT project stakeholders to gain an overall perspective on the organization and key success factors.

Qualifications:

Ø  Juniors or Seniors pursing a B.S. degree in Information Systems/Technology with a focus in Healthcare

Ø  Minimum GPA 3.0

Ø  Knowledge of the software development lifecycle, information systems management, data/systems analysis

Ø  Excellent verbal and written communications skills

Ø  Ability to handle multiple projects concurrently while keeping momentum

Ø  1-2 years of experience or class room project work designing and implementing IT solutions

Ø  This is a paid internship

Park improvements can be an engine of change for Baltimore. Well-maintained city parks promote social health, improve neighborhood safety, and spur economic growth. 

The power to make Baltimore's parks (and the city, as a whole) sustainable, livable and vibrant lies with us. So we are calling on the citizens of Baltimore to "hack" the city's parks. By hacking we mean, citizens develop their own applications (whether they be technology-based or not) which create simple, tangible benefits for the community.

gb.tc has partnered with the Mayor's Office of Information Technology and Baltimore's Department of Recreation and Parks to give Baltimoreans a real opportunity to change our urban green spaces. The goal isn't just to better life in Baltimore, but to give citizens the chance to build real, sustainable businesses which help achieve this end.

Hack the Parks is making grants available to support the most innovative park improvement proposals. We encourage you to think small, at least to start. The funded projects are all pilots. In addition to seed money, the selected pilot projects will also be given park space or other Rec and Parks resources to test their plans, pivot, and evolve into truly viable products. 

Here's how it works:

• Throughout April and May 2013, anyone can propose a solution (or multiple solutions) to improve a Baltimore City park.
• On May 24, the selected pilot projects will be announced.
• In June, Rec and Parks will roll out implementation of the funded solutions.
• All summer long, the solutions will be used in their assigned city parks. Updates on each project will be posted on this website, so the community can keep track of its progress.
• At the end of the summer, there will be a celebration where presentations will be made on each project's success.

We are now offering the UMBC Cybersecurity MPS program at Shady Grove in Montgomery County, MD.

The Cybersecurity Master’s in Professional Studies degree provides students the essential knowledge required to serve in leadership and operational roles throughout the industry. Through the program, students will learn how to analyze cybersecurity risks and assess available countermeasures. The program will expose students to practical managerial and operational considerations needed to conduct cybersecurity activities for large organizations.
