The theme for this year’s Green and Clean Rally is Renewable U, highlighting the impact of sustainable practices on our daily lives. Departments and Student organizations are invited to show off their contributions to UMBC sustainability as it affects University living and the broader society. There are volunteer opportunities and tables are available for organizations to display. A sustainability maze will be constructed on the Quad to offer a fun way to learn what individuals can do to enhance their “Green Footprint”.
During the event, free secure paper shredding will be available for students , faculty and staff, free food, and giveaways. Participants will have a chance to
receive great prizes sponsored by Campus Card and Mail Services Department and Pepsi . Green and Clean Rally is sponsored by ReSET, Retriever Sustainability Events Team ,is a partnership between Student Affairs and Facility Management.

PAID Social Media Intern Needed for Health Living Initiative

Two Interns Needed for Vibrant Living
This is a PAID internship, 120 hours over the course of the semester
for about 10 hours per week ($1,000 stipend paid out in two $500
payments). The internship is funded by the The Shattuck Family Internship Program for Entrepreneurship Innovation and Social Change.
The Main Focus of this internship is on SOCIAL MEDIA.
Sample of additional duties include:
- Help pull together a marketing toolkit, based on ideas from Molly
Shattuck, work that has already been done, and additional examples based
on other similar kinds of initiatives
- Work to qualify and quantify the value/benefits that the program brings to individuals and groups
- Identify target companies/organizations that might represent prospective clients/customers for Vibrant Living
- Participate--as appropriate--in client-visits to understand feedback
and have that inform further development of the toolkit and materials.
The individuals could be from a range of majors, but should have
outstanding communication skills and be interested/experienced with
social media; be a self-starter/entrepreneurial type; be interested in
health/wellness.

CSEE Professor Marie desJardins' success at the 2012 American Crossword Puzzle Tournament last March was highlighted in the latest issue of UMBC Magazine:
"I didn't realize I could be this good at crossword puzzles," says desJardins. She adds that her development as a crossword competitor also highlights the hurdles to bringing more women into the sciences.
"A lot of girls think that they must not be intrinsically good at that stuff," argures desJardins, who adds that the biggest impediments are "the psychological blocks we put up for ourselves."

At this information session, you'll learn more about Microsoft's Win8 App Challenge and how from now until October 26th, you can submit up to three Windows 8 applications for a chance to win a $25 gift certificate. Hackers, data analysts, concerned citizens! Lend me your ear!
Join us for Groundwork, an important event uniting the awesome power of Baltimore’s tech community with organizations and people who could greatly benefit from access to open data and the technological skills to analyze it.
Groundwork is a new way of mobilizing change at a local level. (Check out the schedule here.) It’s a collaboration of policy makers, developers, local educators, and concerned citizens who will come together to analyze the pressing needs of Baltimore, mash up a giant pot of data, and come out with multiple solutions that can help solve some of the City’s biggest problems.
This is an opportunity affect critical change in Baltimore by working together with organizations in need, the federal Department of Health and Human Services, Governor’s offices (both of whom will open never-before-seen data sets at Groundwork,) and the Mayor’s office.
Come help us make a real difference. (Plus, there’ll be food and prizes!)

Students actively enrolled at an accredited educational institution that grants high-school or college/university or equivalent degrees including home schools between September 5th 2012 and Oct 26th 2012 can submit up to 3 Windows 8 applications to become eligible for $25 gift certificate. Students (up to 3 in a team) are required to work with an MSP to envision, build and submit an App to the Windows Store.

Co-Opportunity is a chance for you to learn about your chosen field in a real work environment with experienced GAF professionals. We are offering co-ops in multiple plant locations to those students who are working toward undergraduate degrees in chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering. Each assignment lasts a semester, and you may be invited to return to GAF for additional terms while you continue your education. You’ll be involved in high-profile projects as an integral member of our working teams.
Job Description:
• Performing raw material quality assurance activities and material performance
• Conducting problem solving investigations and troubleshooting to assure root cause is identified, counter measures and recurrence prevention are fully implemented
• Supporting quality improvement initiatives directly or indirectly with suppliers
• Providing technical support and analytical analysis for material issues
• Involvement with data flow diagrams/technical diagrams
Requirements:
• Must be pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
• All candidates must have a minimum 2.8 GPA, at least sophomore standing.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
• Problem solving, project management and communication skills are all necessary as is the ability to operate in a team environment.
• Must have ability to generate accurate and concise technical reports. Should have computer skills in MS Excel, MS Word. Basic knowledge of MS Visio and Auto CAD.
