<Title>Intern of the Week: Zoonash Syed</Title>
<Tagline>Check out Zoonash's internship!</Tagline>

    <strong>Name: </strong>Zoonash Syed<div>

    <div><br></div>
    </div>
    <div>
    <div><strong>Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:</strong></div>
    <div>Some of the responsibilities I am required to do include shadowing attorneys within the office, attending court hearings for cases/trials, reading and organizing cases, as well as reviewing body camera footage in order to help with case preparation.</div>
    </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <div><strong>Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?</strong></div>
    <div>I knew I wanted to have some sort of legal internship, and decided to ask my peers if they knew of any opportunities. A friend who graduated from UMBC let me know about MOPD, which led me to visit their website and notice that they had applications open for summer 2023 placement. At the time, it was nearing the end of the spring semester, so I applied and ended up getting the position!</div>
    </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>How did you find your current experience?</strong></div>
    <div>Alumni Networking.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <div><strong>What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?</strong></div>
    <div>The attorneys and staff at my office are all amazing, and have taught me so much about the legal field (in terms of public defense work). I've been able to ask many questions so that I can truly gain insight into a potential area of law I'm interested in. I also appreciate that I am allowed to participate in pretty much anything that I may find intriguing, such as specific cases or getting to witness interesting trials.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    </div>
    <div>
    <div><strong>How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?</strong></div>
    <div>I was able to provide different perspectives while working as an intern, such as my thoughts on certain cases and the types of arguments one could make (in order to provide different viewpoints for the attorneys I was working with). I also reviewed body camera footage, which helped the attorneys that didn't have enough time to review it themselves (due to the high volume of cases they had on a daily basis).</div>
    </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <div><strong>What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?</strong></div>
    <div>You miss any opportunity you don't take, so always believe in yourself and try!</div>
    </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <div><strong>Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.</strong></div>
    <div>This opportunity gave me a realistic insight into the work life of a defense attorney, which has allowed me to reflect on the possible areas of law I may want to pursue in the future. It's an opportunity that simply can't be replicated through just reading about it online or in a book, and I'm thankful I was able to experience it myself!</div>

    <p>This course presents fundamentals of green urban stormwater infrastructure from an engineering design and analysis perspective. The focus is on novel stormwater control measures (SCMs) for reduction of impacts from urban stormwater. At the end of the course the student will be able to design a variety of types of SCMs. The course is complementary to graduate surface water hydrology and traditional water and wastewater treatment engineering. While presented with an engineering focus, nonengineers such as landscape architects, planners, and environmental scientists should find the course to be useful. A course outline can be viewed at this URL: <a href="https://urbanhydrology.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/581/2023/08/ENEN-701-Green-Infrastructure.pdf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> https://urbanhydrology.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/581/2023/08/ENEN-701-Green-Infrastructure.pdf</a>. </p>

    <p><span> </span><strong><span>Application Deadline for Computer Science is </span></strong><strong><span>5pm October 17, 2023</span></strong></p>
    <p><span>The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to help ensure the quality, vitality, and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full-time research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) or in STEM education. The GRFP provides three years of support over a five-year fellowship period for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM or STEM education. NSF actively encourages submission of applications from the full spectrum of diverse talent in STEM.</span></p>
    <p><span>NSF GRFP was established to recruit and support individuals who demonstrate the potential to make significant contributions in STEM. Thus, NSF especially encourages applications from <strong>undergraduate seniors</strong> and <strong>Bachelor's degree-holders</strong> interested in pursuing research-based graduate study in STEM. <strong>First- and second-year graduate students</strong> in eligible STEM fields and degree programs are also encouraged to apply.</span></p>
    <p><span>Each Fellowship provides <strong>three years of support</strong> over a five-year fellowship period. For each of the three years of support, NSF provides a $37,000 stipend and $16,000 cost of education allowance to the graduate degree-granting institution of higher education for each Fellow who uses the support in a fellowship year. The Fellowship is portable and can be transferred to a different institution of higher education if a Fellow chooses to transfer to another institution after completion of the first Fellowship year. While the Fellowship is offered to the individual, the Fellowship funds are awarded to the institution of higher education at which a Fellow is enrolled and the institution is responsible for disbursement of the stipend to the Fellow.</span></p>
    <h4><span>Eligibility Information</span></h4>
    <p><span>Fellowship applications must be submitted by the prospective Fellow. Applicants must use the GRFP application module in Research.gov (</span><span><a href="https://www.research.gov/grfp/Login.do" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>https://www.research.gov/grfp/Login.do</span></a></span><span>) to submit the application. Confirmation of acceptance in a graduate degree program in STEM or STEM education is required at the time of Fellowship acceptance, no later than the deadline indicated in the fellowship offer letter, of the year the Fellowship is accepted. Prospective Fellows must enroll in a non-profit university, college, or institution of higher education accredited in, and having a campus located in, the United States, its territories or possessions, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico that offers advanced degrees in STEM and STEM education no later than fall of the year the Fellowship is accepted. All Fellows from the date of Fellowship Start through Completion or Termination of the Fellowship must be enrolled in a graduate degree-granting institution of higher education accredited in, and having a campus located in, the United States its territories or possessions, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.</span></p>
    <p><strong><span>Applicant Eligibility:</span></strong><span></span></p>

    <div>The class is a community building effort for all users and potential users of the UMBC TAKI and ADA <a href="https://hpcf.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>high performance computing clusters</strong></a>. <div>Prof. Gobbert is planning to offer the class in HyFlex mode with both in-person and online attendance. Other modalities are possible, too, to reach the largest number of users.</div>

    <div>The goal is for half of the semester to be an individual project, intended to be in and further your ongoing research, with a report and oral presentation. In this way, the class is supposed to further your research immediately and not distract from it.</div>

    <br><p><span>The aim of this research is to introduce, develop and evaluate active learning algorithms that provide near-optimal high-probability bounds on the channel capacity across a discrete memoryless channel (DMC), where the only information about the channel internals (i.e., the channel law) is from a set of observed input-output sample pairs (i.e., channel probes).   Channel capacity is the maximum rate (on average for each value sent into the channel) at which information can flow across the channel with an arbitrarily low error rate.</span></p>
    <p><span>Extending results on the discrete memoryless compound channel, which is comprised of deterministic constraints on the channel law uncertainty, we first develop an offline algorithm to process an observed set of N input-output sample pairs (probes) to compute lower and upper bounds on channel capacity (such that the bounds hold with high probability).  A key ingredient of this result is our new probability approximately correct (PAC) sublevel set bound that improves the convergence rate of Sanov's Theorem from O(log(N)/N) to O(log(log(N)/N) (where the convergence rate is the 'big Oh' Bachmann-Landau limiting behavior).  The experimental (simulation) results match the analytical results.</span></p>
    <p><span>Adapting techniques from pure-exploration multi-arm bandit problems, we further develop an online algorithm aimed at minimizing the sample complexity (i.e., the number of channel probes or samples of the DMC) required to establish a lower-bound channel rate RL that satisfies several stopping criteria, where the lower bound rate RL approaches the channel capacity with high probability.  We show that if the sample complexity of any optimal online algorithm (including a non-feasible clairvoyant algorithm that is given side information to simplify the analysis) is O(N) samples, then our online algorithm requires less than O(N*log(log(N))) sequential channel probes. Thus, we prove that our algorithm is within a sub-logarithmic factor of optimal (i.e. near optimal).</span></p>
    <p><span>The results of this research may provide a deeper general understanding of active machine learning algorithms.</span></p>
