IEEE Makerspace and Lab Hours
Hey everyone,
Our makerspace in ITE 244 is finally open! We've been working really hard to make it as tech-ed out as possible, and it's now open to the public!
The lab is located in the Information Technology and Engineering (ITE) Building, Room 244! It's hidden in a hallway on the second floor past the bathrooms.
The lab can be used for anything you want! We have 3 high-end desktops (with graphics cards!!!), popular off-the-shelf electronics such as Arduino's, Raspberry Pi's, ESP 32's, etc., a TV with speakers, hardware, tools, and a 3D PRINTER!!!. If you have homework, a class project, or a personal project to finish, you're more than welcome to use the space for what you're looking for.
Our lab hours are the following:
- Monday: 1-3PM, 5:30-7PM
- Tuesday: 11:15AM-1PM, 5:15-6:30PM
- Wednesday: 4PM - 7PM
- Thursday: 11:15AM- 1PM, 5:15-6:30PM
- Friday: N/A

The Political Science Council of Majors in conjunction with the Center for Democracy and Civic Life, Women Involved in Learning and Leadership, and Campus Life are hosting a UMBC's first inaugural Women's Leadership Conference on April 19th from 6 - 8 pm in the Skylight Room. This conference will feature notable women leaders across disciplines and throughout the UMBC community. Join us for an evening of panel discussion, Q&A, and networking. Light refreshments will be provided. All are welcome to attend.

Wanna run for an E-Board position?
Hey everyone,
All E-Board positions are up for grabs in this years election. Please submit applications on this
form. Ballots will be released the following Monday on our
discord.
E-Board is a great way to get further involved with our club and it's projects. We accept any major of any year. It is also great for networking and resumes as well.
Here is a general overview of the positions:
President: In charge of the main project.
Vice President: In charge of chapter operations.
Treasurer: Handles club finances and purchases.
Secretary: Organizes events and general body meetings
Public Relations Chair: Upkeeps club social media and advertising.
Volunteer Chair: Works with local organizations to put together small projects for member engagement.
Fundraising Chair: Organizes fundraisers and grants for the club to obtain funds.
Technical Chair: Runs club work session.

Dr. Josephson interviewed on Quirks & Quarks
Dr. Tyler Josephson, assistant professor of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering at UMBC, is interviewed on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation science show "Quirks and Quarks".
Humans are no longer the only ones capable of making scientific discoveries. Kepler's third law of planetary motion has been re-discovered centuries after it was first described – but this time, an artificial intelligence system is taking the credit.
Dubbed AI-Descartes, this "AI scientist" was developed by a team of researchers from IBM Research, Samsung AI, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).
"I think scientists have so many different problems to solve. And if we solve them faster with AI, they just open up brand new questions for us to go after next," Tyler Josephson told Quirks & Quarks host Bob McDonald.

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.
My day to day responsibility was to provide assistance in various software development projects for Amtrak.com using technologies and platforms such as Angular,Adobe Experience Manager,HTML CSS and debugged several developmental issues/defects.
Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
Using LinkedIn, I discovered an open opening for this position and applied. After applying, I was called for an interview in 2-3 weeks.
Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?
LinkedIn or Other Social Media
What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?
The thing I enjoyed the most was the events that were organized by Amtrak to socialize with other interns that enhanced my soft skills.I learned a lot by working with lead software engineers got hands on technical knowledge.
How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I was working on crucial project cookie consent ,I dug out useful/critical insights for them
What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Keep applying, rejections will come but don't give up , and take a chance—the best things take time to come be patient and never quit in your life.

Dr. Josephson collaborates to develop new AI scientist
Dr. Tyler Josephson, assistant professor of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering at UMBC, in collaboration with researchers at IBM Research, Samsung AI, developed AI-Descartes, a new AI scientist, which reproduced key parts of Nobel Prize-winning work, including Langmuir’s gas behavior equations and Kepler’s third law of planetary motion. Supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the AI system utilizes symbolic regression to find equations fitting data, and its most distinctive feature is its logical reasoning ability. This enables AI-Descartes to determine which equations best fit with background scientific theory. The system is particularly effective with noisy, real-world data and small data sets. The team is working on creating new datasets and training computers to read scientific papers and construct background theories to refine and expand the system’s capabilities.

2023 CSEE Research Day celebrates the research accomplishments made by UMBC CSEE faculty and students in the 2022-2023 academic year. A single track will combine computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, cybersecurity, and data science. The event will take place from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Friday, May 5, in the ECS Atrium, with talks presented via webex. It will include research talks by UMBC students and faculty, student research awards, lunch, and a student poster session. The event is free and open to the public.
