    <div>UMBC professor <a href="https://www.manilsuri.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Manil Suri</strong></a> defends the thesis of his new book, <a href="https://wwnorton.com/books/9781324007036" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>The Big Bang of Numbers: How to Build the Universe Using Only Math</strong></a>, by answering questions posed by an interdisciplinary panel of faculty.  His "thesis committee" includes:</div>

    <div>Manil Suri is a distinguished university professor in mathematics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He is the author of three award-winning novels, including <a href="https://wwnorton.com/books/The-Death-of-Vishnu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>The Death of Vishnu</strong></a>, which have been cumulatively translated into 27 languages. He is a former contributing opinion columnist at the New York Times, for which he has written several essays on mathematics. His new book, The Big Bang of Numbers: How to Build the Universe Using Only Math will be available for purchase and signing at the event.</div>

<Title>UMBC M.E.-led Research Highlighted in APS Press Release</Title>

    <p>Every year, the <span>American
    Physical Society's Division of Plasma Physics (APS-DPP)</span> highlights high-impact and
    transformational research as part of their annual meeting on a variety of topics
    in plasma physics. The research team led by <strong><a href="https://me.umbc.edu/dr-carlos-a-romero-talamas/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Prof. Romero-Talamás</a></strong> is
    investigating a new type of fusion energy reactor with the Centrifugal Mirror
    Fusion Experiment, which aims to achieve sustained temperatures exceeding 10
    million degrees Fahrenheit. The research is a collaboration between UMBC and
    the University of Maryland, College Park. </p>

    <div>The Department of Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering (CBEE) at the  University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) seeks to fill an open-rank, tenure/tenure track position in the <strong>broad field of human health</strong>, including areas involving: synthetic biology,  systems biology, bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, development and production of novel  engineered biologics, environmental informatics, environmental microbiology, and  environmental health science and engineering. We are especially interested in applicants who  will conduct interdisciplinary research which will complement the current expertise in our  department and college. Industrial experience is welcome.</div>

    <p>The latest issue of <a href="https://umbc.edu/magazine-home/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Magazine</a> features CSEE Ph.D. student  <a href="https://meyerhoffgrad.umbc.edu/janerra-allen/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Janerra Alle</a>n who is working with Professor <a href="https://www.csee.umbc.edu/people/faculty/fow-sen-choa/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Fow-Sen Choa</a> on advancing and applying brain imaging research.  Janerra is a first-generation college student from Brooklyn, a student leader, and a <a href="https://meyerhoffgrad.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Meyerhoff Graduate Fellow</a>.</p>
    
    <p>She recently presented <a href="She%20recently%20presented%20research%20results%20on%20analyzing%20how%20different%20regions%20of%20the%20brain%20are%20engaged%20and%20if%20they%20are%20working%20together%20at%20the%20SPIE%20Conference%20on%20Defense%20and%20Commercial%20Sensing." rel="nofollow external" class="bo">r</a><a href="https://www.spiedigitallibrary.org/conference-proceedings-of-spie/12122/1212215/Flexible-energy-landscape-analysis-of-functional-connectivity-through-region-bundling/10.1117/12.2619126.short" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">esearch results</a> on analyzing how different regions of the brain are engaged and if they are working together at the SPIE conference on Defense and Commercial Sensing.</p>
    
    <p>In addition to her academic studies and research, Janerra is an active student leader. She is the president of the Black Graduate Student Organization (BGSO), GSA Senator for the College of Engineering and Information Technology, and serves on the tenure track search committee for the CSEE Department.</p>

    <div>The CWIT Student Council in collaboration with SWE, WiCyS, ISSA, GSA, BSA, ASA and NSBE will be hosting a Professional Development Workshop &amp; Panel Discussion on <strong>November 10th </strong>in the <strong>Commons Skylight Room</strong>.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>The workshop portion features two guest speakers both: a career coach and a career strategist who will focus on Confidence, Joy and Balance in career and professional development. The duo are co-founders of the startup Taking it Pro, that helps women achieve career and professional success by providing quality professional tools and resources, career guidance, and an alliance of remarkable women.</div>

    <div>Our panel portion will include stories and questions posed to our four (4) remarkable panelists (see event post) who will share how they were able to navigate challenges including imposter syndrome, toxic work environments and advance in their careers while working in fields where they were underrepresented minorities.</div>

    <div>In addition to being able to ask their burning questions about navigating the behind-the-scenes of internships / jobs, attendees will be entered into a raffle for prizes such as signed copies of the speakers’ book “W.I.S.E. Rebel Moves”.</div>
