Retriever Essentials is currently collecting donations for our Winter Coat Closet! These items are going fast and we still have many community members on our campus who could use a warm coat, hat, scarf, and pair of gloves. Please consider going through your closet and donating anything you no longer wear!

The CWIT Student Council in collaboration with ISSA, GSA, BSA, McNair, and NSBE will be hosting a Professional Development Workshop & Panel Discussion on November 10th in the Commons Skylight Room.
The workshop portion features two guest speakers both: a career coach and a career strategist who will focus on Confidence, Joy and Balance in career and professional development. The duo are co-founders of the startup Taking it Pro, that helps women achieve career and professional success by providing quality professional tools and resources, career guidance, and an alliance of remarkable women.
Our panel portion will include stories and questions posed to our four (4) remarkable panelists (see below) who will share how they were able to navigate challenges including imposter syndrome, toxic work environments and advance in their careers while working in fields where they were underrepresented minorities.
In addition to being able to ask their burning questions about navigating the behind-the-scenes of internships / jobs, attendees will be entered into a raffle for prizes such as signed copies of the speakers’ book “W.I.S.E. Rebel Moves”.

How does Baltimore keep its water safe?
Baltimore’s drinking water system is fed by a network of reservoirs north of the city, including Loch Raven and Prettyboy, and water from these reservoirs travels across the city via a network of pipes.
Upal Ghosh, a professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, said the city uses two main tactics to guard against the kind of contamination seen this week. First, local pumping stations keep the water moving through the system at high pressures, ensuring that the flow is too strong to allow contaminants to seep in, even where there are inevitable leaks in valves or piping.
The other “line of defense,” Ghosh said, is chlorine. The chemical purges bacteria from the water but also decays over time and must be maintained at a high level. In response to the discovery of E. coli and coliform this week, Baltimore has been has been flushing the system and adding extra chlorine.
Could this happen again?
It’s hard to speculate about whether there could be another E. coli contamination without knowing what caused this one. But water infrastructure experts we spoke with say that Baltimore’s aging infrastructure is vulnerable to a number of challenges.
“This is kind of a signal or a flare that we should be paying better attention to the water supply in Baltimore,” said Dillon Mahmoudi, a professor of Geography at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
Baltimore has been widely regarded as a national leader in supplying clean drinking water, becoming a model for other cities. But the likelihood of problems has increased as the system ages, Ghosh said. The average age of the city’s water mains is 75 years, with many over 100 years old. Many pumping stations have also “seen better days,” Ghosh said.
“A lot of this infrastructure lies underground — out of sight, out of mind — and there is clearly need for big investment in infrastructure all over the city,” he said.

When did you start your research on campus? Fall 2021
What is the focus of your research? I work on improving the efficiency of recovering nutrients and contaminants from wastewater systems via Donnan Dialysis in Dr. Lee Blaney’s lab.
What advice do you have for students who are interested in getting involved in research on campus? It is definitely intimidating, joining a research lab where you basically know nothing. But you’re not expected to know everything! You learn as you go, from other members of the lab, the PI, and from doing a little bit of reading on your own. It also helps if the lab is doing research you are actually interested in; doesn’t have to be a lifetime passion, but an interest. Don’t be afraid to reach out to the PI expressing your interest!

Studying the microenvironment of electrode surfaces under ionomer coatings
What advice do you have for students who are interested in getting involved in research or an internship?
It's a good idea to start looking earlier rather than later for internships/REU programs. A lot of the applications are due around winter break. Also, even if you're not sure if research is for you, apply!!! That's the best way to find out. It's truly an amazing and rewarding experience, especially if you apply to a research program at another university. They typically pay for your housing, food, flight, and you get paid a stipend! Plus, you get to experience a new part of the country and meet some new people along the way.

Identifying Commonsense Misconceptions
in Computer Security

We present the results of a survey of 85 computer security experts identifying commonsense misconceptions in computer security. Misconceptions can be hard to unlearn because they are often based on incorrect inferences about personal experience. Misconceptions can lead to mistakes when people reason correctly based on these false beliefs. Therefore, it is important for instructors to address misconceptions in their teaching and help students dispel them (e.g., through in-class and hands-on education) to keep graduates from repeating classic and pernicious mistakes. After developing a codebook of approximately 100 security misconceptions with a group of eight external security experts, two researchers coded all survey responses to identify the most frequent misconceptions seen in the data. Selecting the misconceptions appearing ten times or more in the data, we identified a list of seven classes of frequent and significant misconceptions held by novices in computer security. We describe our methodology and those misconceptions in depth along with their background. These misconceptions are serving as the target for an under-development concept inventory on computer security, along with a set of educational resources to remediate them.
Dr. Peterson earned a Bachelors of Music Education (BME) from North Park University in Chicago in 1999, and an MS (2009) and PhD (2013) in Computer Science from UCLA. His research and teaching interests center on operating systems and computer security, particularly in computer security education. He has an NSF grant to identify and remediate commonsense misconceptions about computer security, is part of an NSF grant team studying the effect of active learning on security education, and an NSF CAREER project to identify and assess the critical cybersecurity ability known as "adversarial thinking." He also leads a team of students restoring and demonstrating a 50-year old PDP-12 minicomputer, one of only a handful still operating in the world. He is a member of the ACM, IEEE, USENIX, and Sigma Xi.
