Testing Requirements Upon Return to Campus

As additional faculty and staff return to campus over the next two weeks, we wanted to share additional instructions and answers to frequently asked questions about how to complete an on-campus COVID-19 PCR test. All community members are required to test the first day they return to campus, regardless of vaccination status. 


1. We recommend that you take an at-home rapid test the day before you come to campus. 


2. Testing on-campus requires the use of a mobile app. Please review these instructions, download and register now, before you come to campus to test. If you need technical assistance, email mgscanner@umbc.edu.


3. Plan to test as soon as you arrive on campus, before 11am if possible.


4. When you come to campus, plan to pick up a vial and swab at:

 

5. Find an isolated or distanced place to complete your swab. This may be your car, your office, or outside. Return your completed test to the drop box at each location. Do NOT test at the pick up and drop off locations as you may expose others.


Frequently asked questions:


Can I be on campus while I am waiting for my results?

Yes. Once you complete your test, you may remain on campus to complete your day wearing an appropriate mask and maintaining physical distance as much as possible. We are relying on masking and distancing protocols to reduce on campus transmission while we await your test results. Given the shortage of testing in Maryland, we felt this was the fairest way to require an entry test.


How long will it take to receive my results?

UMBC cannot check on the status of individual tests. In general, it can take up to three business days to receive your results. Testing results from on-campus tests will be posted to your COVID Compliance Card in your myUMBC profile. 


Is testing on campus safe?

We do believe testing on campus is safe, as long as community members follow instructions, pick up their kits, and swab in a location that is distanced from others. For the first week of classes, we plan to make additional testing, as well as technical assistance, available in the RAC, in order to reduce any potential crowding at testing sites. In addition, it will be helpful to have most employees complete testing next week, before students return. 


What if I recently tested positive? Should I test?

You are not required to test as you may continue to test positive for up to 90 days. You will need to report your result in order to be exempted from entry testing. Information on how to do this and when you can return to campus is available here.

Bioprocessing 4.0 Depends on Advances in Optical Sensors

The move to Bioprocessing 4.0 depends heavily on advancing sensor technology. Only then can one accurately monitor and control biochemical reactions occurring in living cells. At the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), Govind Rao, PhD, professor of chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering, and director of the center for advanced sensor technology (CAST), and his colleagues develop new sensors that help bioprocessors move from batch to continuous processing. One of the key elements to monitor is oxygen.

“Oxygen is the critical metabolic requirement for aerobic cells in culture and is the hardest to supply to cells due to its low solubility,” Rao explained. “Consequently, monitoring its presence is critical.”

Optical sensors offer promise in this area for oxygen and more. When asked about the most important recent advance in optical sensors that can be used in bioprocessing, Rao said that it’s “the ability to monitor multiple parameters in a non-invasive manner.”

Although research on optical sensors plays a fundamental role in their development, bioprocessors look for technology that can go into manufacturing facilities. That’s just what Rao develops. “All our sensors are designed for commercial application and in fact several are on the market,” he said

At UMBC, and across the U.S., college students and young adults are experiencing a number of challenges managing their mental health. While we have some data on the mental health trends of our campus community, we want to hear directly from students to improve upon and develop new ways UMBC can provide support and educational resources. 


With the assistance of an outside agency, UMBC will be conducting focus groups with undergraduate and graduate students to learn more about their mental health experience.


There will be upcoming focus groups via Zoom for on the following dates:

Learn about Ally, a tool available in Blackboard Original and Ultra courses, that improves the accessibility of your course content. Attend this session to see Ally’s remediation capabilities and powerful file conversion tools that generate alternative formats for you and students. 

This 30 minute workshop will offer ideas for developing a strategy to improve your course usability and accessibility and how to get started with Blackboard Ally. Available in both Original and Ultra courses, Ally scans content in Blackboard and provides feedback and tools to identify and fix accessibility issues. 

Leverage Ally's powerful alternative format options yourself, and let students know they can download content in multiple formats that give them choices in how they watch, read, or listen. 

Upon completing this online session, participants should be able to:
  • Run the Ally Accessibility Report for your course (Original or Ultra) to identify accessibility issues  
  • Use Ally's Instructor Feedback Panel to preview content and prioritize remediation
  • Follow Ally's step-by-step guidance to fix accessibility issues
  • Deploy Ally's alternative formats to support diverse learning preferences

Creating accessible content and interactions to support diverse learning preferences are the guiding principles of Universal Design for Learning. Improving the accessibility of course content not only helps ensure students with different abilities can access materials, but it improves the learning experience for everyone, including those who use mobile devices. 

Upon completing this online session, participants will be able to:
  • Recall Universal Design for Learning guiding principles 
  • Identify opportunities for course (re)design incorporating UDL strategies 
  • Describe effective practices that promote readability & usability
  • Create a +1 strategy for UDL in your course

If you're considering working in student affairs in higher education in the future, consider attending the NASPA Undergraduate Student Conference to learn more about the field!

Student affairs professionals work in a variety of different positions on campus; they work in student activities, residence life, academic advising, financial aid, admissions, campus recreation, career services, volunteer services, and student orientation just to name a few. Professionals also work at a variety of institutions – community colleges, public universities, private universities, and institutions of all sizes. Also, student affairs practitioners enter the field from all backgrounds. Whether your undergraduate degree is in political science,economics, psychology, art, or anything in between there is a place for you in student affairs.

This annual conference, which will be held virtually on March 19–20, is intended to help undergraduate students who are considering a career supporting college students outside the classroom network with peers and learn about the realities and rewards of the field.
