Congratulations! Dr. Lee Blaney

<Tagline>2020 George L. Braude Award Recipient</Tagline>

American Chemical Society honors UMBC’s Lee Blaney for commitment to mentoring student researchers

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY | OCTOBER 28, 2020 | MEGAN HANKS

Last Thursday, UMBC’s Lee Blaney was honored for his impact as a chemistry educator and mentor who closely involves students of all levels in collaborative research. Blaney is an associate professor of chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering. He received the 2020 George L. Braude Award from the Maryland section of the American Chemical Society. Blaney was nominated for the award by Mark Marten, chair of chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering at UMBC. During the virtual meeting of the society, Blaney presented his research on the occurrence of contaminants of emerging concern in the Chesapeake Bay.

Blaney said that he was honored and humbled to receive the 2020 George L. Braude Award for his efforts to mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research. During his lecture, Blaney emphasized the impact of his own mentors on his mentoring approach, and said that his mentors Arup SenGupta (Lehigh University), Desmond Lawler (University of Texas at Austin), and Lynn Katz (University of Texas at Austin) changed his life. Blaney has incorporated their advice and his own experiences into his mentoring approach at UMBC. “Seeing my students succeed is the most gratifying aspect of being a professor,” he says.

Even though the event could not be held in person due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of Blaney’s students were able to attend the virtual lecture. Blaney noted that the presence of his students made the celebration even more special. Upon receiving the Braude Award, Blaney emphasized that “this is our award” to his students.

I have always felt his sincerity, commitment, and enthusiasm towards his students’ success,” she said. “It is so encouraging to see Dr. Blaney celebrate each of his achievements as our achievements. I, personally, aspire to be a mentor to inspire and motivate other students in the same way as Dr. Blaney has inspired me.”

RVAM: Self Guided Learning Week 4

Relationship Violence Awareness Month (RVAM) brings people together to create and generate discussion and skill-building on how to prevent relationship violence in our schools, workplaces, and communities, Since most of our campus remains learning and working remotely, we won’t be able to physically come together this October to do this critical work in person… but it doesn’t mean that learning is cancelled!

The Women’s Center has been creating weekly postings to help guide your self-learning that we’ll share with you each week in October. We’re already at our final week – week 4! Below is a short list of relevant webinars or events, podcasts or blogs, and on and off-campus resources dedicated to cultivating awareness about relationship violence, posting your skills and knowledge around the intersecting issues, and increasing access to important resources.

While some of the learning content we’re sharing is all-encompassing, we’re also narrowing down on few key themes this year to include: The Covid-Crossings of Relationship Violence, Relationship Violence’s Matrix of Oppression, and Un/Healthy Relationships for Young Adults. Through self-guided learning, you can dig deeper by listening to a podcast, reading a blog, attending a webinar and more.

These images are from Women’s Center Clothesline Project, which occurs twice a year. It is a way for survivors to share their stories and experiences with sexual violence, and as one can see from the images, no survivor experience is the same. You can learn more about the Clothesline project here. Due to the Pandemic the project is not accepting projects, but will be back once the campus is fully open.

lab. Karla went into detail on the material focus she is undertaking when experimenting
with secondary zinc-ion battery chemistry, and how this research aims to
find an alternative to conventional li-ion chemistries with similar
electrochemical properties. She was able to show them the fully constructed
batteries within the swage locks containing their in-house hydrothermal V2O5
deposited cathodes, zn foil anode, and their novel gel-polymer electrolytes.
The chancellor was intrigued that the focus of the research was not testing batteries for electrochemical characteristics, but rather on
correlating material properties to these electrochemical characteristics.

She further discussed how she and other
researchers are fortunate to be able to conduct research during these troubling
times, and how grateful they are that UMBC is taking all the necessary precautions
to ensure researchers are safe and healthy while working on site.

Intern of the Week: Rehman Liaqat for Political Science

<Tagline>Check out Rehman's internship with MD Public Defender!</Tagline>

Name:Rehman Liaqat

Internship, Co-op or Research Site:Maryland Office of the Public Defender

Position Title:Legal Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s):Political Science and Global Studies

Current Class Level:Sophomore

Work Term:Summer 2020

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

Interning at the Maryland Office of the Public Defender included insight into many fields of legal proceedings that I had never witnessed. My daily routine consists of shadowing licensed Public Defenders in their daily dockets (3 dockets a day 10-20 cases per docket), filing, case-briefing, and also researching. One of the main projects I helped lead was the Maryland Police Project which focused on how police misconduct is treated in different parts of Maryland along with enforcing legislation which demands for accountability for any form of misconduct such as evidence tampering and police brutality. I was a fish swimming in a whole new body of water yet I never felt so connected and at home because of how much I valued our day-to-day work serving the public.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

As COVID-19 erupted, it became almost impossible to obtain any legal internships as Maryland courts remained closed till mid-summer. However, I began emailing and calling and keeping in touch with many of my supervisors from the beginning of spring semester and was given the chance to work on virtual projects till courts reopened and as my own supervisor said it herself when she had to make the difficult decision to only appoint one intern for the summer, "your persistence got you where you are today".

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

Along with the conversations and the people I've met and have had the chance to make a difference in their lives, I think the most valuable part about my ability to intern this summer was the sense of ambition that I began to endure, fueled by the passion I experienced when helping individuals through some of their darkest times. It is truly a moment of enlightenment that never seems to go away.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Whenever I get asked this question, I also think about the boy in the "Starfish Story" (an incredible read btw)! Shadowing the Public Defenders, we saw over 20 clients a day whether it was through traffic violations or assault cases or juvenile court. We cannot magically make the world a better place or get rid of all wrongs, instead, we do as much good as we can and make a difference in the lives of as many starfish as we can. I believe that public defenders help individuals get through some of the darkest times of their lives and I truly felt like I made a difference being a part of the team!

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would recommend exposing yourself to such experiences early. I changed my major my first year at UMBC, mostly through the people I've met and the experiences I've had, but it was because of my exposure to the field that I truly believed I could make a difference. It helped me find my sense of resilience and ambition and Grit, True Grit in the things I feel passionate for.
