Add to UMBC's Virtual Clothesline Project

<Tagline>Create a design and submit it to the Women's Center</Tagline>

Remote or not, Sexual Assault Awareness Month marches forward! Just so, the Women's Center is creating a Virtual Clothesline Project.

Survivors looking to participate can digitally design a clothesline project t-shirt and submit it to the Women’s Center by direct messaging us via Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or emailing your image to us at womencenter@umbc.edu. You can use Canva, Spark, photography, Powerpoint, anything! There are design examples attached to this myUMBC post below.

We will be gathering submissions throughout the month and eventually culminating in a Clothesline Project story on IG and FB, and features in the SAAM zine project, "Survivors to the Front: A Call to Witness."*

For those interested in participating and submitting a design:

In your design, please do not include your name or any other identifying information in your design. If your contribution details your story, and you would like to go no further in the reporting process, we encourage you not to disclose any names or other specific identifying information, such as locations or familial relationships, as those details may prompt staff to follow up with you for reporting matters. This is particularly important for incidents related to childhood sexual abuse.

The Clothesline Project intends to make visible the direct impact of sexual violence on survivors and victims. In doing so, we ask that only those who self-identify as survivors/victims of sexual and/or power-based violence (including those impacted by secondary trauma) create and submit designs.

More about the Clothesline Project:

The Clothesline Project is a community-based public art display in which survivors and victims of sexual and power-based violence design and create shirts that illustrate their stories. In the public display, each decorated shirt is hung shoulder to shoulder so that viewers bear witness to the impact of sexual violence in our campus community. View this blogpost from 2018 to learn more.

*for consideration to be included in our SAAM Zine, submit your shirt design by April 15th

URCAD Moving Online, April 22-29th!

<Tagline>A virtual tour of undergraduate research and creative work</Tagline>

UMBC's 24th Annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day
(URCAD) was originally scheduled to be held on campus on April 22, 2020. Due to the campus closure, URCAD will be moving online, April 22-29th.

Converting URCAD from an on-campus, day-long symposium to an online event will be supported by a technology called VoiceThread (VT), an asynchronous (“not in real time”) platform for media-rich conversations that can occur anytime, anywhere. This means attendees will still be able to see students' research posters and slides, as well as art, performances, films, and video games, and be able to leave video, voice, or text feedback for the presenters. This way, participants create a sense of personal “presence” in the online environment, and students will be able to respond to questions and receive feedback during the week-long event.

We hope to preserve the spirit of URCAD and make this a meaningful, learning, sharing, and celebratory event for our campus community.

Check in with urcad.umbc.edu for updates.

Congratulations to URA Scholars Danilo Symonette, and Jeremy Rubin, who have been selected for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program. The GRF provides financial support for three years within a five-year fellowship period, comprising a $34,000 stipend per twelve-month fellowship year.

Danilo is a McNair Scholar and LSAMP participant. His research, "Towards the Automatic Assessment of Student Teamwork" explores how universities are increasingly using discussion platforms such as GroupMe and Slack to work virtually. However, little has been done so far to understand how to use the data these platforms generate to analyze student teamwork behaviors, and so to support or improve those behaviors. By building a model to automatically predict a student’s performance as a team member based on their exchanges with teammates is itself a significant contribution. Danilo has published several papers with his research mentor, Dr. Don Engel, in the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering department. He will present his project at URCAD 2020 (online), April 22-29th. In addition to the NSF GRFP which will financially support Danilo's graduate studies, Danilo has been admitted to the Computer Science Ph.D. programs at MIT and Stanford, and has also been offered a position at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab.

Jeremy received offers of admission from the University of Pennsylvania (Biostatistics, PhD), Columbia University (Biostatistics, PhD), Johns Hopkins University (Biostatistics, PhD), North Carolina State University (Statistics, PhD), and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Biostatistics, PhD) and has accepted the offer of admission for the University of Pennsylvania. His research, "The Linear Maximal Sequence Kernel Association Test for Neuroimaging Studies" is directed by his mentor, Dr. Russell Shinohara, Associate Professor of Biostatistics, University of Pennsylvania, Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Informatics. This work was continued as a part of the UMBC MARC U*STAR Program, and will culminate in a senior thesis with UMBC's Department of Mathematics and Statistics this Spring. Jeremy is a Meyerhoff Scholar and member of the Honors College, and was a 2018-19 URA Scholar and URCAD presenter (Mentor: Dr. Erin Green). Ultimately, Jeremy aspires to pursue a career in academia as a research professor at a leading medical institution to further research in high-dimensional data analysis for biomedical imaging and allow for more accurate diagnosis and prevention of medical conditions.

UMBC's 2020 Virtual Sexual Assault Awareness Month

<Tagline>We see you. We believe you. You matter.</Tagline>

Sexual Assault Awareness Month brings people together to create and generate discussion and skill-building on how to prevent sexual violence in our schools, workplaces, and communities. While providing support and care to survivors of sexual violence is an everyday action, this awareness month also carves out intentional moments to honor and believe survivors’ stories and experiences. As we all do our part to flatten the curve during this public health crisis, we won’t be able to physically come together this April to do this critical work. The Women’s Center and all of our campus partners including the Office of Equity and Inclusion, University Health Services, the Counseling Center, Green Dot, We Believe You, and Retriever Courage, and more will nonetheless continue to promote awareness and prevention this month.

We are inviting our UMBC community to join our efforts.

Get Involved:

Learn - Each week during April, the Women’s Center will be focusing on various topics and issues related to sexual violence awareness and prevention (see attached flyer). Follow us on social media (Facebook,Twitter, and Instagram) to watch videos, read articles, and engage in other content for learning and skill-building. Leave us comments or ask questions. We also hope to offer some virtual discussions over the month to engage as a community in this learning. Stay tuned to the Women’s Center’s myUMBC for more details.

Create - We are redesigning the Clothesline Project and parts of Take Back the Night for a virtual setting that honors survivors’ stories and creates space for community members to hold and validate these stories. Survivors of sexual violence/power-based violence are invited to share their stories so others in our community may still bear witness. The Women’s Center will share these stories in a virtual Clothesline Project and zine project: “Survivors to the Front: A Call to Witness”.

--To submit a virtual Clothesline T-Shirt Project, visit our myUMBC post for more details.

--To submit artwork, poetry, stories to our zine by 4/15, visit our myUMBC post for more details.

Come Together - The We Believe You discussion groupwill still be meeting weekly. Survivors of power-based violence are welcomed to join this virtual community hosted by the Women’s Center with support from the We Believe You student org. Email womenscenter@umbc.edu for more details on how you can join this virtual discussion.

The events, activism, discussions, support, and stories that stem from Sexual Assault Awareness Month are some of the Women’s Center’s most significant and special. As we make adjustments to our calendar and move programming online, we want students to know that it is okay to grieve Take Back the Night and our other annual traditions. We are alongside you in that grieving process, and we hope that in these extraordinary times, we can continue to act with extraordinary compassion and conscientiousness to prevent sexual violence at UMBC and beyond.

And, remember, no matter where you are, dear survivors, we see you. We believe you. You matter. Always.

Additionally, throughout this time of distance learning, campus staff are still here and available for support. Do not hesitate to reach out for questions, concerns, or care.
