Speakers: Daniel Pichardo and Dr. Xue Yang

Speaker Bios: Danny Pichardo is a Senior Data Scientist at Newwave. He previously worked as a Statistician at the American Urological Association. He holds a B.Sc. In Statistics from UMBC. His interest and experience include prediction modeling and causal inference using real world health data.

Xue Yang is a data scientist with a solid medical background. At NewWave, Xue works on data analysis and AI/ML model exploration that support data exchange/feedback platform and AI/ML projects. Before joining NewWave, she was building AI/ML models using medical insurance claims data at CareFirst. Xue has a M.P.S. in Data Science from UMBC, a Ph.D. on Genetics and an M.D. from China, and was a postdoc at Johns Hopkins Medical School at the Institute of Genetic Medicine.

Abstract: Value-based healthcare is a healthcare delivery model in which providers are paid based on patient health outcomes. Value-based healthcare requires measuring clinical outcomes and spotting population trends while incentivizing health care providers for the delivery of better healthcare.

New Wave is building next-generation data platforms to improve health outcomes and reduce waste by transforming the wealth of data CMS currently collects, which allows the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation to fulfill its objectives of delivering value-based health care for the citizens. We leverage cloud-based tools such as Snowflake, Looker, and Databricks to provide health care providers a flexible platform to explore their patient’s data, as well as enable data scientists to perform efficient data analyses, model development, and reporting. We will demo how these tools can seamlessly work together, enabling every step of the data science process. Please join us on this journey of transformation as we attempt to modernize and innovate in healthcare.

Future Technologies Conference (FTC) 2020

We'd like to invite you to submit your papers/posters/demo proposals for the Future Technologies Conference (FTC) 2020 to be held from 5-6 November 2020 in Vancouver, Canada's most ethnically diverse city.

FTC attracts researchers, scientists and technologists from some of the top companies, universities, research firms and government agencies from around the world. Each paper will be reviewed by at least three regular PC members or two senior PC members. The acceptance decisions will take into account paper novelty, technical depth, elegance, practical or theoretic impact, and presentation.

The conference programme will include paper presentations, poster sessions and project demonstrations, along with prominent keynote speakers and industrial workshops. It is a very-well attended conference by industry, government, and academia to share information, network, explore ideas, and learn about emerging trends and today's hottest and most provocative technology topics.

FTC 2020 papers will be will be published in Springer series "Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing" and submitted for indexing to ISI Proceedings, EI-Compendex, DBLP, SCOPUS, Google Scholar and Springerlink. The publications within "Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing" are primarily proceedings of important conferences, symposia and congresses. They cover significant recent developments in the field, both of a foundational and applicable character.

FTC 2020 promises to provide the perfect setting for researchers and practitioners to reflect on the substantial progress made by the academic community over the last few years as well as to anticipate where we might head throughout the next few.

The Career Fair has passed and now it’s time to start applying to jobs! One of the keys to succeeding in a job application is to write a standout cover letter. Cover letters are formal business letters meant to get across who you are as a person, your job qualifications, and how you can add to whatever company or organization you want to work for.


Here are some quick tips for writing a standout cover letter:


  1. Structure your cover letter like a letter. You should include your permanent address, the date, the name of the hiring manager, their job title, the company name, and the company address.

  2. Match your resume. There shouldn’t be anything written in your cover letter that isn’t reflected in your resume. Additionally, you shouldn’t just walk the reader through your resume; the cover letter is where you give more details and really connect your skills to the job position.

  3. Focus on your strengths. Display confidence and positivity. The cover letter is where you can really show off your strengths, so try not to focus on what you lack.

  4. Minimize the use of “I” Be sure to vary your sentence structure to make reading your cover letter more interesting. Try not to use the word “I” too much, use “you” and “your” more frequently. It’s best to talk about what you can add to the company rather than what you can get out of working there.

  5. Keep it short. The most effective cover letters are concise and clear.

  6. Proofread. Spell-check isn’t enough! Be sure to proofread your resume and double-check that you are using the correct words for the correct context.


Cover letters may seem confusing and intimidating, but they don’t have to be. Be sure to utilize the Career Center resources available to you! We review cover letters during drop-in appointments Mondays through Thursdays from 2 pm to 4 pm and on Fridays from 12 pm to 4 pm. Of course, you can always make a longer 30- or 60-minute appointment with a Career Specialist through UMBCworks as well.

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

This semester I have been working for the Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship as their Social Media Marketing Intern. Each week, I create and post material on our Instagram, Twitter, and myUMBC groups. I am also responsible for updating/enhancing the website through WordPress. In addition, I attend all of our events and take photos of our guest speakers.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard of this position on UMBCworks last spring. Once I saw the application come out, I did not hesitate to apply because I knew this was going to be something I would really enjoy doing. Prior to applying, I went to the Career Center a few times to ensure that my resume was good to go and my interview skills were ready. Later, I heard back right away after applying and followed through with the process of obtaining my position through two more interviews before receiving the final offer.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization? 

I love working with my boss and having the freedom to create content on all social media platforms. The people I have met through this internship have inspired me to continue my career in this field. 

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

The content I have created has really helped our organization increase event attendance by spreading the word about entrepreneurship and has even influenced people to add our minor. More and more students have been more interested in the Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship, and I’m looking forward to the Spring semester.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience? 

Don't be afraid to create and work on something that you haven’t before. Prior to this internship, I thought that I would struggle using the software to update the website, but after some practice it actually became easy and now I have another skill to add to my resume.

Google's annual Hash Codecoding competition is coming up with an Online Qualification Round on Thursday, February 20.

 

Hash Code is a great opportunity for you to flex your coding skills, learn more about software engineering at Google, and have some fun. In the past, contestants have tackled challenges focused on YouTube, self-driving cars, Loon, and more (more info here).

 

Top teams from the Online Qualification Round will be invited to attend the World Finals at Google's European headquarters in Dublin, Ireland in April.

On Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18, Google will gather 50 engineering and computer science students from across the U.S. and Puerto Rico for the fourth annual Hispanic Student Leadership Summit (HSLS), in partnership with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. Google’s HSLS was created to bring Latinx student leaders together to share innovative and creative best practices with one another, and to connect and network students with Latinx leadership at Google. Student leaders from all North American universities are encouraged to apply.

Sensing an opportunity to improve wind energy: Maryland Innovation Initiative and bwtech help UMBC faculty commercialize their research

Wind turbines are massive, with a single turbine blade measuring up to 350 feet (about 110 meters), longer than the wingspan of some commercial airplanes. At its highest point, a blade can be 850 feet (260 meters) off the ground, almost reaching the height of Eiffel Tower. When UMBC engineer Dr. Soobum Lee looks up at these turbines, generating energy in fields and even offshore, he thinks about their size as an enormous opportunity, and also a challenge.

Lee, Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department, studies energy harvesting, but not in a way that most casual observers would connect with wind turbines. He researches how vibrations can power portable devices on a very small scale, and he develops devices that convert those subtle vibrations into energy.

A few years ago, Lee began exploring how to harvest energy from the rotation of vehicle tires. This led him to begin looking at the spinning motion of wind turbines, and the additional small vibrations that turbines make as they spin continuously. He came up with a novel idea: using these small vibrations—not previously harnessed for energy—to power transmitters that could send sensor data to a wind turbine’s operation and maintenance systems.

Lee explains that wind turbines have sensors on their blades to alert their operators if the blade gets damaged, such as by birds or lightning, or if there is a malfunction or maintenance issue. For example, icicles can form on turbine blades, changing their aerodynamics. Or, the blade could be vibrating abnormally, indicating a more serious mechanical or structural issue in the blade.

Until now, these sensors have been powered by batteries that need to be changed every two years or so. Changing the batteries is time-consuming and can be dangerous for people maintaining the turbines, as they need to climb up the turbines, hundreds of feet in the air, to access multiple sensors on one blade.

“The sensors are to help with maintenance,” says Lee. “If they also create a maintenance need, it’s a problem.” He wondered, what if you could design a sensor that wouldn’t require new batteries?

Bringing research to consumers
Over the past 7 years, UMBC faculty from engineering and the sciences to the arts have worked to commercialize their research, to bring innovative technologies to companies and consumers. Knowing that this can be a challenging transition, UMBC and the State of Maryland have created a range of initiatives to help faculty pursue entrepreneurship opportunities. One core opportunity is the Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII), established by the state and five research institutions, including UMBC, to promote research commercialization.

A unique feature of the MII program is the introduction of university “site miners” to facilitate the application process for faculty inventors. These commercialization experts support faculty with preparing proposals and advocate for projects in the review process. UMBC site miner David Fink, entrepreneur in residence, says, “The MII program is the most significant factor in the increased commercialization of UMBC-owned intellectual property.” Sixteen companies have been formed by UMBC faculty since the start of MII.

Since 2013, Lee has applied for three MII grants. His first two attempts were not successful but helped him grow his proposal. On his third try, he received a phase one grant to develop his vibration-powered sensor technology.

Through bwtech@UMBC, UMBC’s research and technology park, Lee connected with Pranay Kohli, an energy sector executive with experience working with companies and clients around the world. In 2018, Lee and Kohli founded ACTIVEcharge, LLC, a startup that develops solutions to autonomously monitor wind turbines.

“Soobum and I have benefited tremendously from the MII program. Although we had the technology and the business skills, what MII and bwtech provided us was the ecosystem of professionals who have guided us along the way,” says Kohli, CEO of ACTIVEcharge. “That has opened up so many doors for us as we move forward to commercializing the solution.”

Technology with an impact
Lee’s work has continued to move forward since he received the MII grant. In the lab, he and his students have developed a power management circuit and have integrated it with a power source, sensor, and data transmitter that is about six inches tall and weighs about two pounds.

The sensor provides the signal to the transmitter, and the transmitter sends the data to a receiver. This process uses the energy produced by the attached mechanical generator, powered by vibrations from turbine blades. No external source of energy is needed. It is also designed to sit inside the blades, so it is completely protected from the elements and does not interfere with the blade aerodynamics.

Lee and Kohli hope that, in the next two to four years, their integrated solution will be installed on turbine blades across the country and internationally. Their goal is to provide turbine maintenance crews with near-real-time data that can support their work in a way that doesn’t create additional labor or physical risk and prevents potential catastrophic events.

Sustainable energy projects are growing in the U.S., and now is an important moment to make technology improvements that will boost that growth further, Lee notes. He shares, “I want to make things even better than they are now.”
