The coordinator will also grow partnerships and volunteer base. All candidates (including prior and current Choice folks) must apply directly through UMBC's PageUp application system. </p></div>

<Title>Dr. Soobum Lee receives research funding from NASA</Title>

    <p><strong><span>Topology Optimization of Wind Tunnel Balance
    Axial Section</span></strong><span></span></p>
    
    <p><strong><span> </span></strong><span></span></p>
    
    <p><span>Professor Soobum Lee has
    received new funding from NASA for the development of a new topology
    optimization methodology for the design of a 3D printable wind tunnel force
    balance.</span></p>
    
    <p><span>Wind tunnel force
    balances measure multidimensional aerodynamic forces applied to an aircraft in
    the wind tunnel testing. They need to be designed to detect/distinguish
    directional forces while satisfying the basic load carrying performance. </span></p>
    
    <p><span>The objective of this
    research is to develop a topology optimization methodology for a force balance
    design that considers both global and local measures (e.g. local strains) and
    determine the positions of multiple sensors (strain gauges) as well as overall
    structural layout for 3D printability. </span></p>

    <div>Congratulations to Mustafa Al-Adhami! </div>

    <div>Mustafa is a Mechanical Engineering PhD candidate in Dr. Rao's lab. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>After a series of rigorous training sessions with professional 3MT coach, Scott Morgan, the 3MT competition took place between six finalists:  Michael Battaglia, Jr., Kayla Lemons, Sonya Squires-Caesar, Alex Rittle, Mustafa Al-Adhami, and Juan Valdez. Each student delivered a dynamic presentation of their thesis in under 3 minutes! </div>

    <div>After a rigorous round of deliberation by the 3MT judges (members of the graduate school and alumni), the first place prize was awarded to Mustafa Al-Adhami. He will have the honor of representing UMBC at the 3MT Regional Competition! Alex Rittle was awarded second place winner. Mustafa Al-Adhami was also awarded the People's Choice Award!</div>

    <div>This year's competition showcased a variety of research. The Graduate Research Conference Committee is extremely grateful for all of the presenters, reviewers, volunteers, and other campus participants who made the 40th Annual Graduate Research Conference a success! </div>
