How I Celebrate Chinese New Year!

<Tagline>Guess who's excited?? Me!</Tagline>

Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year, is coming up quite rapidly!! It has been celebrated for thousands of years, but I won’t bore you with the history. In my family, it is tradition to get together and celebrate with each other, honor our ancestors, and eat plenty of homemade food! We actually celebrate it the day or night before the actual day of the new year, so this year we are celebrating on the 15th of February. Since it is based off of the lunar calendar, the dates always differ each year which gets super confusing. Everyone may celebrate it differently, but for me, the main focus is to relax and eat everything my grandma puts in front of me. This year’s celebration is extra special to me because it falls on my birthday: February 15th!! I hope everyone who chooses to celebrate receives plenty of red envelopes (traditionally filled with money!) and enjoys a variety of yummy food.

But enough about me, I want to also mention what our students are doing to celebrate Chinese New Year. The Chinese Student Association (CSA) is hosting a Lunar New Year Gala on February 15th, from 7:30 to 9:30pm in the UC Ballroom, open and free for anyone to attend so definitely check it out if you want. Furthermore, Mosaic is hosting an event titled “So...What is ‘Good’ English?” discussing the origins of the variety of American English dialects and the superiority of what is considered “standard English” on the same day, 2/15, from 5:30-7pm in Commons 329. If you find yourself with a some free time tomorrow, please come by to either OR BOTH of these events!

Innovations that came from university research: The Polaroid

<Tagline>Become a URA Scholar and Invent/Create Something!</Tagline>

    Did you know?

American scientist and inventor Edwin Land was fascinated by developing an inexpensive method that used polarizing filters to capture and develop images instantly on film. He would conduct much of his research by sneaking into Columbia University’s labs in New York City at night to use the equipment, later returning to Harvard to further his research. He would go on to found Polaroid Corporation in 1948 with one of his physics instructors, which would become a highly successful business. Polaroid also invented and manufactured an instant movie camera system called Polavision. The kit included a camera, film, and a movie viewer. When the movie was shot, it would be taken out of the camera and then inserted into the viewer for development, then viewed after development. This format was close to Super 8mm film. Because it lacked audio capability, and with the advent of VHS video recorders, Polavision had a short history.

The Path Before Me

<Tagline>"College Coaching" by UMBC Students</Tagline>

UMBC's college access/readiness program, Path Before Me, is actively recruiting Spring volunteers. The hope is to have students placed in site schools by the end of February. Volunteers will work in city schools, providing "college coaching" to high school juniors.

Last semester, there were 13 student volunteers who held over 100 individual coaching sessions with these high school students. The youth feedback about the experience was great.

If you, or anyone you know is interested--or if you have questions-- contact Frank Anderson at afrank3@umbc.edu.

To begin tutoring, you will need to register through the Shriver Center.

What you do:

"Coach" high school juniors around the SAT, the college application process and experience. You will meet either in small groups, or one on one with your mentee, at their schools. Snacks are provided, as well as mentoring materials, and an on site coordinator. You can volunteer at one or two sites, if interested.

City--will focus very closely on SAT Prep. The school has material for us to use, which includes practice problems and building study skills.

Ben Franklin and Poly--will focus more holistically on the college process, including essay writing, the application, the college experience, and the SAT.

Times:

    Tuesdays 2:30p-5p (City College)

    Wednesdays 2:30p-5p (Ben Franklin)

    Thursdays 10a-1p (Poly)

Transportation:

Frank will work to designate one student from each school site to be responsible for driving and taking a greater leadership role within the group, making them eligible for a $500 stipend. This student can drive their own car, or the Shriver Van. Leaders are still needed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The goal is to begin at the end of February.
