Call for SWENextEd Workgroup Volunteers

SWENextEd is a Work Group on SWE’s Outreach Committee.  It is focused on providing information and resources to SWE’s K-12 Educator Members.  

We know that educators play an important role in helping us promote engineering to their students.

The SWENextEd Work Group is excited to announce some great volunteer opportunities for four new sub-workgroup volunteers to help lead our key newsletter sustainability needs. 

The sub-workgroup committees will be dedicated to the generation of critical newsletter content subsections. See the attached file for details about each volunteer position.

As sub-workgroup members you will be responsible for building society media and resources in multiple avenues, allowing us to plan ahead and coordinate innovative ideas deep into the threads of the society. 

With the help of our sub-workgroup members, the newsletter editor would be able to generate regular and consistent newsletters.

The amount of time required for each role is estimated in the attached.  As we ramp up the pull list, more work may be required in the first few months and then level out as we build the backlog. 

The only requirement is that you must be a SWE member in good standing (i.e. dues paid).

If interested in any of the attached positions, please send an email to SWENextEd@swe.org  by February 10th, stating which position you are interested and why (just a brief sentence or two is all that is needed).  We will be reviewing the information from all of the interested members and looking for the best fit for the positions.  We will let you know as soon as we've made our selections.

Reminder — Apply now for Society of Women Engineers' scholarships for the 2017-2018 academic year. Collegiates who will be sophomores through Ph.D. candidates can apply online now through February 15, 2017.

The SWE Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to women studying baccalaureate or graduate programs, in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science. In 2016, SWE disbursed more than 230 new and renewed scholarships valued at over $750,000.

Students complete one application and are considered for all scholarships for which they are eligible. The online application is entirely electronic - including submittal of reference recommendations and transcripts.

UMBC undergraduates interested in the Grand Challenge Scholars Program are encouraged to attend a symposium and recruiting event at 1:00pm on Friday, February 17.

The Grand Challenge Scholars Program is a program for undergraduates in all majors who are interested in thinking about big problems facing society, and how to solve them from broad, multidisciplinary perspectives. Students select one of 14 Grand Challenges identified by the National Academy Engineering, and work within the cohort of Grand Challenge Scholars to identify and pursue experiences related to their Grand Challenge in five program areas: research, interdisciplinary, entrepreneurship, global, and service.

To launch the upcoming spring application period for UMBC students entering the program, there will be a Grand Challenge Symposium on February 17, 2017, from 1-2:30 pm on the 7th floor of the Library. The symposium will feature 14 UMBC faculty members who will give two minute “mini-talks” on their research as it relates to the 14 Grand Challenges. The event will also showcase some of the work of the current Grand Challenge Scholars, and we will offer light refreshments.

Students who are interested in applying to the Grand Challenge Scholars Program are especially encouraged to attend, as are faculty and staff who have an interest in any of the Grand Challenges or would simply like to learn more about the program. More information about the program is available on the UMBC Grand Challenge Scholars Program Web site and applications are due on April 1.

Course instructors or TAs can arrange for a program representative come to their class to share information about the program by contacting Prof. *protected email* or *protected email*.

Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) features research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Undergraduate Research Award (URA) funds your work with up to $1500. Student work is shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits and performances, and film.

Join us and see how you can present/perform your creative work at URCAD, and get it funded with a URA award! 

"UMBC Suits You" is collecting new and gently used professional clothing as part of Career Month.

Students will have the opportunity to learn about dressing professionally and will then be able to select one free outfit to use in their job search. We are asking staff and faculty to donate new and gently used professional clothing at collection bins around campus from February 26th - March 8th.

Starting February 26th, Professional Clothing can be dropped off at the following on-campus locations:

• Career Center, Math/Psych 201:   8:30 am – 5 pm (Mon-Fri) 
• The Mosaic Center, The Commons 2B23:   10 am- 7 pm (Mon- Thur), 10 am- 5 pm (Fri)
• Residential Life Office, Erickson Hall:   8:30 am – 4:30 pm (Mon-Fri)
•  The Shriver Center, Public Policy Building 1st Floor:    8:30 am – 5 pm (Mon-Fri)

Items that will be accepted: dresses, shell tops, button-up shirts and blouses, skirts, blazers, dress pants, garment bags, belts, ties, skirt suits and suits.

Items that will NOT be accepted: jewelry, handbags, shoes, and general accessories.

Clothing donations will be used to benefit UMBC students and will not be considered as gift-in-kind or donation to UMBC. Clothing donations are not eligible for a tax-deductible receipt. Any leftover clothing will be donated to local non-profits.
