Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research, or service- learning opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

My day starts at 5:30am - the production staff and on-air talent all have to be ready to be on the air at 6am across the country so we arrive early to scour the web for topics to discuss on air and program promotional spots to air in different markets. During the show, we screen listeners who call in to participate in the show, produce daily podcasts for our website and edit show segments to be syndicated a replayed on iHeartRadio. We also have cameras in our studio that we operate; they stream the show live on the internet to give listeners an inside look into the show.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I have the opportunity to work with ridiculously talented, hardworking and FUN people! We all aim to produce a show that is exciting and entertaining for our listeners and we can't help but have a great time in the process. I also enjoy getting to talk to people from all over the country who call in; everybody has a unique story to share and it's wonderful to have the opportunity to connect with so many fantastic listeners.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another opportunity?

I walked into this experience without any radio production experience; I was thrown in from day one and have learned so much about the broadcast industry in a short period of time. Working on such a high-profile program has been fantastic because we are driven to produce such high quality work; the stakes are high and it motivates me to be the best that I can be.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Put yourself out there! Your resume will only get you so far in this business - it's really about having a dynamic, outgoing personality and not being afraid to be yourself. Make an impression and don't let them forget you!

How do you see your experience as meaningful? This might involve skills you’ve gained, information you’ve learned, mentors you’ve connected with, or projects you’ve completed.

The networking in this business is insane; in addition to the radio personalities who I have the privilege of working with every day, I am always meeting people who are well-connected and influential in the broadcasting business. We also have a very dedicated fan base; we can ask for the most outlandish thing during a show and I guarantee you that at least one person will call in and be more than willing to help us out. There is always somebody who can help you out, you just have to know where to find them!

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Three students in UMBC’s College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE) have been selected for major scholarships to pursue studies in cybersecurity-related fields under UMBC’s participation in the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Scholarship for Service (SFS) Federal CyberCorps program. As SFS Scholars, students receive full tuition, fees, annual reimbursement of professional development expenses ($3,000), a nine-month stipend ($20,000 for undergraduates, $25,000 for MS/MPS students, and $30,000 for PhD students) for up to two years (three years for PhD or BS/MS), and assistance with federal cybersecurity internships and career placement. To be eligible for SFS funding, applicants must be full-time students at UMBC committed to cybersecurity-related research and education activities, have an excellent academic record, and not have any significant outside employment obligations.

The first-round awardees for AY14-15 are:

• Anastasia Raffucci, BS (CMPE)
• Jackson Schmandt, Ph.D. (CMPE)
• Brooke Young, BS (CMSC)

These new awardees will join existing UMBC SFS Scholars Oliver Kubik (BS, CMSC), Mary Mathews (PhD, CMSC), Nathan Price, MS (CMPE). Punlada Muangrat BS (IS), Alex Cooke BS (IS), and Denis Danilin MS (IS).

The CyberCorps program produces highly-qualified professionals to meet the United States government’s increasing need to protect American’s cyber infrastructure. While in the program at UMBC, SFS CyberCorps Scholars participate in special SFS program activities, have opportunities to engage in mentored research opportunities both at UMBC and its partners from industry and government, and must complete a paid summer internship for the federal government. Upon graduation, each student must work for the government (for pay) for one year for each year of scholarship received. CSEE Drs. Alan Sherman and Richard Forno direct the program under a five-year $2.5 million NSF grant received in 2012.

The Arduino micro-controller is a great device for anyone who wants to learn more about technology. It is used in a variety of fields in research and academia as well as by hobbyists. Arduino can be used for projects ranging from quadcopters to thermal cyclers  and even wearable electronics. Here is more information about the Arduino.

The workshops are intended for ANY student from ANY major and only require a basic understanding of basic programming concepts such as if-statements and loops. The majority of the code will be provided.

The Arduino workshops are offered on a weekly basis at two levels: Level 1 for those new to Arduino and Level 2 for students who have completed Level 1 or have a basic familiarity with Arduino. The Level 1 workshop is offered on Tuesday and Wednesday from 7:00pm to 9:00pm starting the week of April 1st. You may select to participate in either our Tuesday lecture or Wednesday lecture. Lead Developer

Skills- The Lead Developer should possess the knowledge of using Cloud Environments for data storage.  They must have higher programming experience with Ruby, Python, JAVA and Javascript as well as higher scripting experience with PHP.  A strong understanding of UNIX and Linux operating systems as well as a familiarity with MongoDB, Memcached, and Redis is required. They should posses a degree in Computer Science or the equivalent along with strong analytical and trouble shooting skills.

Responsibilities- The Lead Developer is expected to manage a technical team giving advice and direction to their juniors as necessary.  They are responsible for project management, full cycle development and continuous improvement initiatives.

GUI/HFE

Skills- The Graphic User Interface Designer must possess a strong knowledge of GUI and HFE, and good verbal and written communication skills.  They should have an excellent understanding of Android and IOS systems, HTML5 and JAVA programming languages, Dojo toolkit and JSON as well as Rest Services.

Responsibilities- The Graphic User Interface Designer is expected to coordinate visual design projects and perform testing of designs.  They are responsible for participating in the full lifecycle of product development and working closely with product management.

Functional Lead

Skills- The Functional Lead must possess a working knowledge of graph databases and key values stores, strong Linux and UNIX administration skills, delivering software, and networking capabilities.  They must have experience in programming using JAVA, HTTP protocol, Python, Javascript, Dojo toolkit and OAUTH2.

Responsibilities- The Functional Lead are expected to manage the functional team giving advice and direction to their juniors as needed.  They will test and certify integrity of automated solutions and programs, and explain how to branch, for and tag code.  They will also develop, verify and write business and functional requirements, configurations, work flow analyses, test plans and test scripts.

Platform Lead

Skills- The Platform Lead must possess strong knowledge of Application and Instrumentation Monitoring (BIT), and Authentication, Authorization and Audit (AAA).  They must have strong Linux administration skills and be able to program using JAVA, HTTP protocol, Python, Javascript and OAUTH2.  They also must have a working knowledge of graph databases and key value stores (NOSQL).

Responsibilities- The Platform Lead is expected to lead the platform team and give advice and direction to their juniors as needed.  They will be required to understand the limitations and challenges of system integration and compatibility issues between multiple platforms.  They will provide input and suggestions based on knowledge of area and responsibility and be able to explain hot to branch, fork and tag code.

Platform Developer

Skills- The Platform Developer must possess strong knowledge of Application and Instrumentation Monitoring (BIT), and Authentication, Authorization and Audit (AAA).  They must have strong Linux administration skills and be able to program using JAVA, HTTP protocol, Python, Javascript and OAUTH2.  They also must have a working knowledge of graph databases and key value stores (NOSQL).

Responsibilities- The Platform Developer is expected to demonstrate experience delivering software.  They will provide input and suggestions based on knowledge of area and responsibility and be able to explain hot to branch, fork and tag code.

Applications Lead

Skills- The Applications Lead must possess strong Linux administration skills, experience with networking and programming using JAVA, HTTP protocol, Python, Javascript, Dojo toolkit and OAUTH2.  They must have a working knowledge of graph databases and key value stores (NOSQL).

Responsibilities- The Applications Lead is expected to lead the applications team and give advice and direction to their juniors as needed.  They are responsible for delivering software, explaining how to branch, fork and tag code, and providing expert knowledge and skill for development.

Architect

Skills- The Architect must possess a working knowledge of graph databases and key value stores (NOSQL), and have experience with networking, delivering software and programming using JAVA, HTTP protocol, Python, Javascript, Dojo toolkit and OAUTH2.  They are required to have strong Linux administration skills.

Responsibilities- The Architect is expected to lead the technical teams to continuously improve the technology platform and delivery value.  They will ensure accuracy in terms and asset management, explain how to branch, fork and tag code, and provide and review estimates for software development.  They are also expected to identify opportunities to adopt innovative technologies.

Release Engineer

Skills- The Release Engineer must possess a working knowledge of graph databases and key value stores (NOSQL), and configuration management.  They will have experience with code documentation and interface control documents maintained as wikis, software engineering and release engineering if configuration management.  They have strong Linux administration and networking shills. 

Responsibilities- The Release Engineer is expected to promote and enforce standard release process, maintain and update tools used to assist with preparing release packaged and debug deployment issues.  They will support and document the evaluation of new proposed technologies by insuring operational requirements are met as well as solve release engineering problems.  They must also be able to explain how to branch, fork and tag code.
