Women of Our Time

Women of Our Time 20th Century Photographs from the National Portrait Gallery The National Portrait Gallery website offers us an interactive version of the traveling exhibition, Women of Our Time: Twentieth Century Photographs from the National Portrait Gallery. The images featured are studio portraits, glamour shots, press photographs, advertising images and amateur snapshots paired with short, informative biographies of some of twentieth-century America's most famous and influential women.

The website has an introduction that begins with, "Of all the landmark changes in twentieth-century America, one of the most significant was the changing role of women and their growing importance in all branches of endeavor." In 1975, the United Nations began sponsoring International Women's Day to honor women everywhere but they deserved recognition before 1975. Women were devoted to the cause of labor, being part of the Revolution in the early 1900's and organizing against militarism and war and many other things.

In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to a month and March was declared Women's History Month. "As one such example followed another in ever quicker succession, the broadening range of opportunity for women has become an irreversible fact of American life and a reflection of women's achievement."

On-Campus Interviews (OCI)

Did you know that UMBC offers the opportunity to interview with employers for full-time, career-related positions right here on campus?

For a list of companies and the dates they are coming to campus you can check out the OCI calendar on our website, or log into UMBCworks where you can search for positions and apply directly.

After applying via UMBCworks, the employer selects who they want to interview, and those students are notified via email and will be able to select an interview time.

Apply now for an interview this semester with Enterprise Holdings, Rockwell Collins/ARINC, Maxim Healthcare Services, and Northwestern Mutual Financial Network (to name a few).

Informational Interviews

Are you in the process of choosing an academic major, making career choices, changing careers, or beginning a job hunt? Informational interviews may help you explore your options.

Informational interviewing provides the opportunity to gain current information from professionals in the field. Informational interviews help you gain valuable information for job hunting and career planning, learn about a particular organization, and network and establish contacts.

How are informational interviews different from other types of interviews? Informational interviews are meant to help you obtain information, not ask for a position.

To prepare for an informational interview: know your own skills, interests, values, and how they relate to the career field represented by the person you will be interviewing. Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is software that gives the user the freedom to use, copy, study, change, and improve it. FOSS contributors believe that this is the best way to develop software because it benefits society, creates a fun collaborative community around a project, and allows anyone to make innovative changes that reach many people.

Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers students stipends to write code for FOSS projects. Participants work remotely from home, while getting guidance from an assigned mentor and collaborating within their project's community. The application deadline for Google Summer of Code is March 21 and the program dates are May 19 to August 18. The stipend for the program is $5,500 (USD).

In an effort to improve the gender diversity in FOSS, a number of organizations are offering Outreach Program for Women internships through a program organized by the GNOME Foundation. These internships are open to women (cis and trans) and genderqueer. The internships have the same structure, the same stipend and similar program dates. The application deadline for the Outreach Program for Women is March 19 and the program dates are May 19 to August 18. Unlike in Google Summer of Code, participants do not need to be students and non-coding projects are available. In addition to coding, projects include such tasks as graphic design, user experience design, documentation, bug triage and community engagement.

To apply for either program, you need to connect with a participating organization early, select a project you want to work on, create a project plan, and make a few relevant contributions.

The mentorship opportunities are also available throughout the year for anyone interested in getting started contributing to FOSS outside of the formal internship program. In addition to the organizations participating in the Outreach Program for Women, more organizations that offer informal mentorship to all newcomers are listed here:

The annual CWIT Spring Into Leadership event is just over a month away and we could use the help of a few Affiliates in the rest of the planning. We will have a planning committee meeting from 12-12:50pm on Wednesday, March 12 (one week from today) in ITE 456.

We will also have a planning committee on Wednesday, March 26, from 12-12:50pm in ITE 456. If we need one more meeting after that, we will schedule it later.

In these meetings, we will decide on how the networking piece of the event should work, whether you think we should have a theme to the event this year, what kinds of topics you think our keynote speaker should address in her talk, ideas for an interactive piece we could work with the speaker to incorporate in her talk, etc.

Even if you can only make one of the two scheduled dates, we encourage you to attend the one you can make; everyone's input will be valuable in making these decisions for the event.

Spring Into Leadership will be held on Tuesday, April 8, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the UC Ballroom. You may RSVP at the website attached to this post to attend this event. For the planning committee meetings, no RSVP is necessary.

Meet Stephen. He is a Computer Engineering and a current URA (Undergraduate Research Award) Scholar. His research will study the development of a unique underwater signal reflection-enabled, acoustic-based localization scheme that employs both a line-of-sight and surface-reflected non-line-of-sight ranging information to locate undefined reference points.

How did you find your mentor for your research, scholarship, or artistic project?
Dr. Younis taught my introductory Computer Engineering class where he spoke of his own research. I toured his lab the following semester and quickly began to involve myself in his lab.

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?
Honestly, I didn’t know this was a project that I wanted to do, yet after speaking with my mentor I felt that this would be a perfect field to begin working in based on the classes I had taken and what I hadn’t taken yet.

Is this your first independent research project?
No, I previously worked on 2 different research projects. The first was at Montana State University during the summer following my sophomore year. This research dealt with radio beam-form transmissions and the automation of radio equipment. My second research project was conducted at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, where I was working with robotics.

How much time do you put into it?
I work roughly 10hrs/week during the school semester, and I worked 40hrs/week over the summer.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award (URA) program?
I had seen numerous student profiles listing participation with the URA program and I felt that the URA was just what I needed to help fund my research.

What academic background did you have before you applied for the URA?
I applied as a junior, so I had already had all my basic computer engineering classes, as well as most of the electrical engineering classes needed for this type of research.

Was the application difficult to do?
The application was not difficult at all. As long as you have some background within your research area, the application is very straightforward.

How much did your mentor help you with the application?
My mentor answered questions that I wasn’t able to, and also provided me with draft fixes so that my answers were as accurate as possible.

What has been the hardest part about your research?
Starting the code development of the MATLAB test bed. After hearing how complicated the simulation has to be, along with the amount of mathematics involved, I felt somewhat intimidated with what we would have to create. So far the simulation has been going well, and is already providing great results

What was the most unexpected thing?
The most unexpected thing has been the amount of time required to accomplish the tasks at hand. I have spent a lot more time in lab then I had originally thought I would be spending.

How does your research relate to your work in other classes?
My research entails underwater localization, which by itself is something I have never had a class on. The math involved however, along with the circuitry, programing, and paper writing all relates back to classes I have had within the Computer Engineering department.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?
First, make sure you have the time to dedicate to working in a lab. When you are not in the lab collecting data, you will be conducting background research, writing papers and logs, emailing data back and forth, and keeping a constant communication with your mentor(s). Also, make sure the subject you are working within is something that you can see yourself working in further into your future. I have spoken with multiple researchers and companies that I may have opportunities to work with after I attain my degree, and it is all thanks to the research involvement I have now.

What are your career goals?
After I obtain my Bachelor of Science, I would like to attain both an electrical engineering graduate degree and an engineering license. I would like to start my career within the private energy sector as an engineer, where I hope to work with the nationwide energy grid.

Did you transfer to UMBC from another institution? Where?

No, I have been with UMBC since my freshman year.
