Announcing the Launch of DeQH, a Desi LGBTQ Helpline

On National Coming Out Day, Thursday, October 11th, 2012, a coalition of
South Asian lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ)
organizations and individuals in the U.S. launched *DeQH, the first
South Asian LGBTQ national helpline*. DeQH offers free, confidential,
culturally sensitive peer support, information and resources by telephone
for LGBTQ South Asian individuals, families and friends around the globe.
The intent is to provide a safe and supportive ear for callers to share
their concerns, questions, struggles or hopes through conversations with
trained LGBTQ South Asian Peer Support Volunteers.

Callers can reach the helpline at (908) FOR-DEQH (908-367-3374), 8pm-10pm
on Thursdays and Sundays, Eastern Standard Time [5-7pm PST]. 
Days and times will expand over time.

DeQH is a collaboration of South Asian LGBTQ groups and individuals around
the nation including AQUA North Carolina, Hotpot! in Philadelphia, SALGA

becoming a general volunteer or would like to be trained as a peer support
volunteer.

Welcome to the 2013 Academic Year. We have a lot to celebrate in our department. We welcome two new Assistant Professors: Nilanjan Banerjee and Jian Chen, and new Lecturer John Park. Dr. Banerjee directs UMBC’s new Mobile, Pervasive, and Sensor Systems Laboratory, which will carry out research that focuses on renewable energy driven devices. Dr. Chen specializes in visualization techniques that help scientists make better sense of their data. John Park has extensive indsutry experience in areas including operating systems, real-time control systems, artificial intelligence/machine learning, digital imaging and graphics, and bioinformatics. This Fall he will teach CMSC 104 and 201.

We will have a very busy recruiting season this year. We are searching for two lecturers in Computer Science and a third lecturer/Professor of Practice in Computer Science with expertise in CyberSecurity.

Our research efforts continue to remain strong and our expenditures were approximately at the $5 million level for last fiscal year. Our awards starting January 1, 2012 to date exceed $5.5 million! CSEE Professor Dr. Alan Sherman (PI) and Dr. Rick Forno (Co-PI), Graduate Program Director, Cybersecurity have received an NSF grant of $2.5 million over five years to fund 22 students studying Information Assurance (IA) and Cybersecurity. The scholarships are part of the Federal Cyber Scholarship for Service (SFS) program. UMBC CSEE Professor Penny Rheingans received an NSF research award, Transforming the Freshman Experience of Computing Majors, to develop and evaluate an innovative first-year seminar for computing majors aimed at increasing retention, completion, and success among students, especially women and those from underrepresented groups. Dr. Rheingans will serve as the principal investiga-tor for this three year project, which will also include Drs. Marie desJardins (CSEE), Carolyn Seaman (IS), and Susan Martin (CWIT).

CWIT Director and CSEE professor Penny Rheingans was interviewed by Sheila Kast on today's Maryland Morning show on WYPR as part of a segment on Ada Lovelace Day (October 16). You can listen to the WYPR interview here.

Ada Lovelace was an English mathematician and writer known for her work on Charles Babbage's early mechanical general-purpose computer in the mid nineteenth century. She is considered the "first computer programmer" because she was the first person to develop an algorithm intended to be executed by a machine. Ada Lovelace Day is about "sharing stories of women — whether engineers, scientists, technologists or mathematicians — who have inspired you to become who you are today. The aim is to create new role models for girls and women in these male-dominated fields by raising the profile of other women in STEM."

Summer Research Intern at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland
Major: Mathematics

Briefly describe your research position including your day-to-day tasks and responsibilities.

I worked with my mentor in the Information Technology Lab on a project called “Simple Analysis of Biometric Matchers.” Biometric matchers compare images of a person’s features (such as DNA, fingerprints or irises) against images stored in a database to see if the computer can find a match and identify the subject. The matchers I analyzed were used for latent fingerprints and face recognition. I compared two different functions that model the performance of biometric matchers and tried to figure out which matchers worked best and why. Most of my time was spent analyzing data, programming and modeling the results of our experiments. SURF students also attend weekly seminars where scientists from NIST and other institutions present their research.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and what have you found most challenging?

What I enjoyed most was developing new skills. For instance, I learned a great deal about working with data in Excel and the statistical programming language R. I came into this internship with little knowledge about data analysis or biometrics and my skills have grown significantly over the course of this internship. The most challenging aspect was the beginning. Initially, I found myself staring at dozens of spreadsheets full of data, not having a clue what to do. I did make some mistakes, but over time I got used to working with the data.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another summer activity?

This was a valuable experience because it gave me a chance to see what a career in research is like. Also, it was very helpful to be around scientists in my field of interest.

How do you see your summer work as meaningful? Has it given you a chance to work on issues or with communities that matter to you?

This summer has shown me that automated biometric matchers are an important part of Forensic Science and other fields. My work is meaningful because it plays an important role in helping NIST and other institutions to develop better and more efficient matchers.

How has your summer experience shaped the way you think about your power to impact the world?

Anyone—especially researchers!—can impact the world for good. What you do as a student may seem small, but it is part of a bigger picture. I learned that even the mundane parts of my research are important and contribute to the scientific community. I am also grateful to have learned a great deal from my mentor and the other researchers in my lab.

Software Development Engineer (SDE)
Whether you’re creating new code, algorithms or data structures, you are the link between abstract concepts and the technology products used daily by your friends, family and millions of other people around the world.  Using your mastery of technical tools, you develop next- generation applications and operating systems, making decisions on design and feature implementation.
Software Development Engineers dive deep into code and work as part of a team of programming experts who solve problems and build powerful new tools. You collaborate with Software Development Engineers in Test (SDETs) to ensure stellar product quality, and you provide technical guidance to Program Managers (PMs) as they communicate user needs and product requirements. As a SDE, you dedicate yourself to producing the world’s most advanced software.
Qualifications: 
•Pursuing a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related field 
•Excellent programming skills. Experience with object oriented programming languages, preferably C, C++, and/or C#
•Familiarity with data structures and algorithms as well as feature definition, design and feasibility
•Ability to translate technical specifications into working code, and solve complex problems with consideration of the end user experience

Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET)
You have an innate understanding of technology. You always know how a program works, even when others do not. You are passionate about making things faster and more efficient, truly pushing software to its limits.
Software Development Engineers in Test are highly technical and you use your technical prowess to build and maintain automation systems, debug and isolate problems and execute creative tests to make sure our software is ready for prime time. SDETs write lots of code—code to test software features and code to extend our automation infrastructure.  You work closely with Software Development Engineers (SDEs) and Program Managers (PMs), each contributing equally to the development life cycle. You enjoy breadth in your job and continually look for ways to integrate systems across business groups and products. 
Qualifications:
•Pursuing a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
•Excellent programming skills. Experience with object oriented programming languages. C, C++, and/or C# experience preferred
•Familiarity with data structures and algorithms
•Ability to solve complex problems with customer experience in mind
•Ability to author test plans and cases, conduct security and stress tests and debug at source level after identifying, investigating and prioritizing bugs


Program Manager (PM)
As the in-house advocate for the millions of people worldwide who use Microsoft products, you drive the technical vision, design and implementation of next-generation software solutions.  You predict and research how software is used and work closely with Software Development Engineers (SDEs) and Software Development Engineers in Test (SDETs) to ensure our end products exceed those expectations. 
You gather customer requirements, write functional specifications and analyze usage cases to represent customers’ needs throughout the development process.  You’ll invest your time in partnering with other product teams across Microsoft to drive collaborative solutions. If you love negotiating, evangelizing and empathizing on behalf of our customers, the PM role is for you. 
Qualifications: 
•Pursuing a B.S., M.S., or PhD. Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
•Experience with object oriented programming languages. C, C++ and/or C# experience preferred
•Familiarity with data structures and algorithms
•Ability to solve complex problems with consideration of customer experience
•Excellent verbal and written communications skills; ability to communicate with a variety of audiences

How did you find your mentor for year research project?
I actually had some trouble finding a faculty advisor. I talked to Dr. Snyder from the MCS department about possibly using my research idea as my capstone project. He advised me to look towards other departments for an advisor. I contacted Dr. Bell from the MLL department and he put me in touch with Dr. Stolle-Mcallister who agreed to advise me. I had never met Dr. Stolle-Mcallister before, but he was very supportive of my idea.

How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?
I had been thinking of developing a research project to conduct while I was abroad. Though my study abroad plans fell through, I already had the idea and was still interested in following it through. I have always loved children’s books and working with young children, and I had been introduced to the analysis of language through my English and MCS classes. It seemed natural to merge topics that interested me.

Is this your first independent research project?
This is not my first independent research project, though it is the first that requires any funding. I am writing an honors thesis for the English Honors program, which also focuses on a critical analysis of language and its implications.

Do you get course credit for this work?
I might try to use this project as a capstone for MCS, but as of now it is completely independent and self-motivated.

How did you hear about the Undergraduate Research Award program?
My teachers have advertised the URA program for years, but I never thought I would develop an idea worthy of one. I was not overly confident in my proposal idea, but as a junior, this was my last year to apply. I knew this was a great opportunity, and everyone was very supportive of me, so I decided to apply.

Was the application difficult to do?
The application was not difficult at all. Writing the application was beneficial because it forced me to expand and elaborate on my idea to make it stronger and more competitive. My advisor was supportive and helped with any concerns I had.

How much did your mentor help you with the application?
Dr. Stolle-Mcallister helped me with proofreading and final review. He supported my ideas and gave me the independence to craft the project I wanted.

What was the most unexpected thing?
I am still early in the program, but the most unexpected thing so far is the supportive community for URA Scholars. The program directors seem genuinely invested in my success, and the other students help create a positive environment. There is so much more to being a URA Scholar than just conducting independent research; it is a community dedicated to individual student success and achievement.

What else are you involved in on campus?

I work as a production assistant for The Retriever Weekly, as well as a tutor in the Writing Center. I am a member of the Oxfam International club and an editor for the school’s literary magazine Bartleby.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

If you have an idea - or even if you don’t have an idea - you should consider research! The URA Program offers a support system, but ultimately provides you with the independence and freedom to do whatever you want.
