Dr. Ghosh featured in Bay Journal for PCB research
On November 5, Dr. Upal Ghosh, professor of Environmental Engineering, was featured in a Bay Journal article on his research on environmental contaminants.
Dr. Ghosh has been using new sampling techniques to detect PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) in the Anacostia and Back Rivers. He has also developed SediMite (pictured below), a form of activated carbon which captures PCBs that might otherwise dissolve back into waterways. His work may help lessen the levels of toxic chemicals built up in Chesapeake Bay fish.

Dr. Blaney's lab engineers a solution for poultry litter
The National Science Foundation has released a Science Nation video featuring Dr. Lee Blaney as well as both graduate and undergraduate students in his lab: "Sustainable Agriculture: Engineering a win-win solution for poultry litter." The lab's work focuses on extracting nutrients from poultry litter that might otherwise pollute waterways via runoff, thus helping farmers and the environment at the same time.

Office of Accessibility and Disability Services Expansion

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
UMBC is committed to fostering a campus community that promotes and enhances access and inclusion for individuals with disabilities.
As part of our efforts to progress beyond compliance and towards seamless access to University services and spaces, we are pleased to announce the expansion of the Office of Student Disability Services that will now fall under the Office of Accessibility and Disability Services (ADS) within the Division of Academic Affairs. The ADS will be the central office for managing resources, initiatives, and concerns related to accessibility and will serve as the primary resource for students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors. ADS will also provide expertise to the UMBC community regarding workshops and training, emerging issues, updates on acquisition of resources, facilities planning, and policy reviews. As the focal points, ADS will be responsible for the coordination of all disability accommodation requests by UMBC employees and students and will also serve as the first point of contact for any disability access-related concerns or campus complaints.

ADS will work closely with Facilities Management, Human Resources, Student Affairs, Human Relations, the Division of Information Technology, and the Library to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities.
Current SDS Director, Tawny McManus, will lead the ADS office. We are also excited to announce that Stephanie Lazarus, UMBC's current ADA/Section 504 Coordinator, formerly with the Office of Human Relations, has transitioned to join ADS. Ms. Lazarus will continue to serve as the campus ADA/Section 504 Coordinator and assume the new role of accessibility manager.
We are confident this new centralized structure will offer improved service to the campus community through an organized, multi-disciplinary, comprehensive, and systematic approach to accessibility.

Learning to diagnose mental illnesses from fMRI data
A recent IEEE Spectrum article, Teaching Machines About Madness, mentions the research of CSEE alumnus Vince D. Calhoun (Ph.D. 2002) and his mentor Professor Tülay Adali on developing a machine-learning system that can distinguish between people with schizophrenia and those with bipolar disorder using multiple functional magnetic resonance imaging brain scans. These conditions can be difficult for doctors to distinguish and require different treatments.
Dr.Calhoun is currently Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Neurosciences, Psychiatry and Computer Science at the University of New Mexico. You can find our more about this and related research on the Web site of the Dr. Adali's Machine Learning for Signal Processing Laboratory.
