Intern of the Week: Jaydeep Dhanak for Information Systems

<Tagline>Learn about Jaydeep's work at The Living Legacy Foundation!</Tagline>

Name: Jaydeep Dhanak

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: The Living Legacy Foundation

Position Title: IT Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Information Systems

Expected Graduation Year: May 2017

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

At the Living Legacy Foundation I’ve been working on various projects with the IT department such as helping with the new iPhone’s being issued, inventory on computers & printers, setting up new workstations for new people, configuring hardware/software issues for laptops, desktops, and printers, and handling network issues that occur from time to time

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I obtained my internship earlier in the year. I went to the UMBCworks page and applied to internship opportunities I was interested in. From there I followed up on my applications by contacting the companies and asking them if they had gotten a chance to review my resume and cover letter. After that I did get the opportunity to interview for a few companies. From the group of companies I had to decide which company would be most beneficial for me and so I chose The Living Legacy Foundation. I went through about 3 interviews and then finally got the chance to be an Intern for them and it's been great.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

The most interesting thing I have enjoyed about my position at the Living Legacy Foundation is that there is something to learn everyday. Whether it be something technical or health related. Ever since I started working here I have definitely learned and have gotten experience in technical and software concepts but I have also learned a lot of health/donor concepts since the Living Legacy Foundation is an Organ Procurement Organization.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Through my work here at the Living Legacy Foundation, I have made an impact by helping create a new network environment as we upgraded the systems. We also adopted a new phone system and it has been great so far because the phone systems can do much more than the old ones. I am in the process of also coming up with a plan of action to replace all the old printers in this company with new updated ones which should help out the company a lot.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Some advice I would give to another student is that just stay positive during the process of finding an internship and even after getting one. Know that you're there to help the company out but you're also there to help yourself out by gaining as much experience and knowledge as you can. Communication is also key because if you communicate with your peers, you might get to learn something new or learn how to do something in a simpler way. Communication also gives you a chance to gain new connections not just in your field but connections all around.

Intern of the Week: James Ebong for Information Systems

<Tagline>Learn about James's experience at Discovery Communications!</Tagline>

Name: James Ebong

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Discovery Communications | Title of Your Position: Global IT Business Operations Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Information Systems

Expected Graduation Year: 2016

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research, or service-learning opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

As a Global IT Operations Intern, I have an awesome opportunity to work for the headquarters of the #1 Distributed Television Company in the world. My day-to-day tasks include supporting the Quality Assurance and Business Application teams. My main projects involve providing technical and business solutions for applications dealing with international contract management and domestic distribution. These applications are responsible for tracking over a billion dollars annually.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I applied for their summer internship in my final semester at Montgomery College. I went through 3 stages of interviews before I received an offer.

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

Montgomery College

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

The thing I enjoyed most about my organization is that they kept the interns involved. The internship program created plenty of tours, workshops, networking, and charity events which helped us all bond and learn more about the company through former interns in other departments.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another opportunity?

The experience of working for a Fortune 500 company and seeing everything that goes into making a media giant like Discovery stay successful. I was also given the opportunity to get my certification in automated testing during my internship which I received before the beginning of the Spring Semester began.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

As I talked to HR managers in the company they stressed that grammatical errors in your resume are one of the biggest things that could stop you from getting to the next stage of the hiring process. With that being said, make sure you thoroughly review your resume and make sure you stand out during your interview.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / the internship placement process.

Definitely the opportunity to earn internship credit while working. It's a great opportunity due to how much you learn and the fact that you will be even more prepared for your career field.

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Pennsylvania General Energy | Title of Your Position: Software Developer

Major(s)/Minor(s): Information Systems

Expected Graduation Year: Master Student, May 2015

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research, or service-learning opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

I interned at Pennsylvania general Energy as Software Developer. It is such a nice place to work. I particularly enjoyed the friendliness of my fellow programmers. They were very helping in answering any questions that I needed answered. My daily routine began with programming in ASP.NET(C#) using MVC framework. My first assignment was to create of an app for the PGE legal department. In addition, I was also I asked to help with the completion of a web based application which was about 80 % done. Despite some challenges, I really enjoyed my internship. I gained a wealth of knowledge from it.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

A friend of mine told me that there was a position open for software developer intern. I immediately went online to learn something about the company.

While I was waiting to hear from them, I spent some time reading about some of the requirements(technologies) for the job that were not very familiar to me. This was very helpful on the day of the interview.

Something I would like to mention is that they were asking for 1.5 years of experience to be hired. Even though I did not have that much experience, I did not shy away from applying.

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

Network

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

The Employees at PGE were very friendly especially the programming team and my supervisor. They made sure I did the work. However, they were very kind in answering any questions that I may have had.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another opportunity?

By working on real, hands-on project, I was able to gain in the following technologies.

    -	ASP.NET MVC 4 and 5 Framework
    -	Visual Studio 2012 IDE, Entity Framework 5 with Migrations
    -	HTML5, CSS, JavaScript (JQuery and Ajax), GIT Repository

Secondly, I build good professional networks that may become relevant especially in my job hunt after graduation.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

My advice would be to make sure you distribute copies of your resume to people. You never know when an opportunity may become available.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / the internship placement process.

This internship brought the best out me! It taught me that all I needed was an opportunity and a challenge, to fully comprehend my capabilities.
