INSIDE DOIE

<Tagline>Meet Tawny McManus</Tagline>

Inside DOIE is a monthly series that introduces the faces in Division of Institutional Equity. This project is an opportunity for our campus community to get to know the team.

Tawny McManus(she/they/any)

Role within the Division: Asst Vice President for Accessibility & Disability Services

How long have you been at UMBC? : 11 years UMBC, 1.5 DOIE

How would you describe your role within the Division of Institutional Equity?

I serve as a partner and ally in the Division's equity and inclusion efforts, leading and supporting UMBC's work to advance disability access. My role centers on fostering the creation of proactive, welcoming, and disability-inclusive practices, initiatives, and policies across the university. I view accessibility as a core equity priority, a moral imperative, a legal requirement, and a central focus and passion of my work within DOIE. I am committed to cultivating a university community that works collectively and collaboratively to eliminate barriers that limit the full and equitable participation of students, staff, and visitors with disabilities. My vision is one of lasting disability culture change—where programs, services, classes, facilities, and daily operations are universally designed for all of us; where accommodations become obsolete because access is already built in; and where disability identity is recognized as a strength of our diverse community.

Can you share a moment or experience that shaped your passion for equity and inclusion work?

It is difficult to name a single moment, as my "why" has been shaped by a lifetime of experiences that continue to influence and deepen my commitment. As a person with multiple disabilities, a mother of children with disabilities, and a daughter, sister, cousin, colleague, and friend to people with disabilities, disability identity and lived experience have been a constant presence in my life. Experiencing and witnessing barriers, setbacks, exclusion, and bias have continually fueled my passion for advancing disability access and inclusion work. I have dedicated my career to being in service to people with disabilities and have found purpose and belonging in promoting disability awareness, acceptance, and inclusion in higher education, where I believe meaningful and lasting change is possible.

What is one initiative or project you're currently working on that excites you?

I'd be remiss if I didn't shout "Digital Accessibility" from the rooftops as the answer to this one! I have had the opportunity to work as part of an incredible team across multiple divisional offices on the creation of a roadmap and plan for ensuring that all of UMBC's digital web content is accessible to individuals with disabilities by April 2026, the deadline given by the Department of Justice's final rule updating the regulations of Title II of the ADA. This is exciting as it is a huge step forward in creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for our disability community and a demonstration of our commitment to becoming an inclusively excellent university. We were given a limited timeline and resources to meet this goal, and in true UMBC fashion, the village has come together to make tremendous progress in a short time. I am so proud to be a part of this moment in UMBC history.

Outside of work, what's something that brings you joy or helps you recharge?

Exercise! I'm an avid Pilates and barre lover, I enjoy the gym and group classes, and love the outdoors, hiking, and adventuring with my family. A bad day for me can turn around just like that once the endorphins are flowing.

Can you share a book/quote/movie or something others can engage with from your perspective of inclusive excellence.

"Sometimes the greatest gift you can give another person is to simply include them." -Unknown

As part of UMBC's ongoing commitment to fostering equitable and inclusive learning and working environments, we're excited to offer departments a meaningful opportunity to strengthen community, repair relationships, and build trust across campus through Restorative Practice sessions. These offerings include multiple circle types, facilitated by partners in the Division of Institutional Equity (DOIE), and tailored to the unique needs of faculty and staff departments.

We invite faculty, staff, supervisors, and department leaders to discover how restorative practices can empower your teams to cultivate cultural competency, equity, accountability, and community care. These collaborative sessions provide a dedicated space to enhance communication, deepen connections, and foster a more inclusive work environment. To learn more or explore how these practices might benefit your department, please reach out to the Community & Culture team at culture@umbc.edu.

DOIE RESTORATIVE OFFERINGS

Restorative circles, community conversations, and dialogues

Circles provide structured, equitable spaces for dialogue and connection. DOIE offers various circle types, including community-building, learning, restorative dialogue, healing, resetting, and re-entry circles to support faculty and staff (individuals, groups, departments).

Reach out for DOIE support when: Your department wants to strengthen culture proactively, address interpersonal tensions or misunderstandings, process the impact of bias incidents or crises, support colleague reintegration after conflict or leave, or explore challenging topics related to equity and inclusion.

Restorative Conferences: Formal Support for Complex Situations

In DOIE, restorative conferences are structured, facilitated meetings designed to address significant harm, policy violations, or formal workplace conflicts, particularly when navigating identity-based issues, community climate, and cultural differences. These conferences bring together affected parties with institutional representatives to repair relationships, establish accountability, and create clear paths forward.

Reach out for DOIE support when: There has been a formal complaint, policy violation, or significant identity-based interpersonal harm; parties are ready to engage voluntarily in structured dialogue; institutional representatives need to be part of the resolution process; or clear, documented agreements and follow-up are essential.

Group Facilitation: Retreats, Listening Sessions & More

DOIE provides customized facilitation for departmental retreats, listening sessions, and other gatherings where skilled, restorative facilitation helps groups navigate complexity and move toward shared goals, particularly when navigating identity-based issues, community climate, and cultural differences.

Reach out for DOIE support when: Your department is planning a retreat and needs skilled facilitation; you want to gather qualitative feedback through listening sessions or town halls; your team is navigating organizational change or climate concerns; or you need support creating inclusive dialogue spaces for sensitive or complex topics.

*Available Facilitators: Jasmine A. I was the one of three Black people in my class from first through third grade. That was a very isolating, foundational experience for me. I am also a first-generation college graduate. My education afforded me with the privilege to see firsthand how education can change the trajectory for not only myself, but also for my daughter, and other family members. I believe everyone should be afforded the same access to education. I went to Morgan State University, an HBCU, for my undergraduate education. Upon graduating from Morgan, I went to Johns Hopkins University for graduate school. These were two disparate experiences that allowed me to see the vast resource disparities between the two institutions and allowed me to see the connection between community and belonging and academic achievement.

What is one initiative or project you're currently working on that excites you?

I cannot pick just one. I am excited about all of the transformative work happening within the division. Through the Office of Community and Culture, the Office of Accessibility and Disability Services, and the Office of Equity and Civil Rights, we work each day to cultivate a campus community where every individual is empowered to thrive, transform, and contribute to a culture of inclusive excellence.

Outside of work, what's something that brings you joy or helps you recharge?

Spending time with my family, especially my 25 year old daughter, Skye, and my Yorkie granddog, Giovanni.

Can you share a book/quote/movie or something others can engage with from your perspective of inclusive excellence.

"If you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else." – Toni Morrison
