Kudos to Tom Penniston on New Book Chapter

DoIT would like to recognize its own Tom Penniston on the publication of the book chapter “Service Learning and the Acquisition of Social Capital in the Community College Setting.” For this project, Penniston and co-author Amy Pucino conducted interview research to investigate how service-learning participation helps community-college students develop formal and informal relationships and access resources, such as letters of recommendation.

The findings of the research highlight the connections students forge through participation in service-learning. “When students stepped out of their comfort zones, they were able to build and connect with social capital, which may be of special importance to community-college students” (Pucino & Penniston 2014). Penniston, who earned his Ph.D. from UMBC in 2014, believes these experiences support students’ academic and professional success.

Faculty and Staff Encouraged to Update Directory Listings

<Tagline>Log into your myUMBC profile and make the necessary changes</Tagline>

The UMBC Directory Search offers a browse by department feature that shows people affiliated with a university department. At times, people may incorrectly appear as part of a department, so it’s important to keep the directory updated as correcting this problem depends on the person’s affiliation with UMBC.

To navigate to the directory listings page, log in to myUMBC and mouse over your name, on the drop down menu click profile and then navigate to Online/Print Directory Info link at the bottom. If you do not see your department listed, submit a ticket with the UMBC Technology Support Center to have it made available.

Damian Doyle, Director of Enterprise Infrastructure and Support says “The process is quick and easy, it only takes a minute and is intuitive once you are on the page.” Actions such as removing a former employee or updating a job title are quick and easy, and require only a minimum amount of steps.

“As people are searching for who to contact across campus it can be very frustrating for parents/students and other faculty and staff if information in the directory is inaccurate and leads people on wild goose chases,” says Doyle.

myUMBC Updates: Now in Beta!

<Tagline>I hope Maggie doesn't notice the difference!</Tagline>

Highlights & Notes

Menu Changes

Topics will remain at least through the next year, no need to change links or documentation this time...whew

Events was pulled out from the Community menu

Community is no longer a menu, it now just shows pawpular, commented, or recent posts from public groups

Start Page

Activity Feed filled with the latest posts from groups you're following. Note: Updates only go back about a month. Once in production you'll see all past updates.

Right-Hand Column

Outstanding alerts will show prominently at the top of the right-hand column

Guide card available for students, but looking for feedback on what might be useful for Faculty and Staff

Events from followed groups, attended events, and other upcoming events

Featured Groups - to be replaced with new topical groups that are intended to replace Discussions

Pawpular posts from public groups

Topics

Navigate between topics more easily with list of topics along left side of page

Group Pages

Renamed Tabs: Home, Posts, Events, Files, People

Activity Feed, new events card

New Follow / Notifications dropdown on every page

Group Admins can Pin and Mark Important all posts, events, and files

New single posting setting on Group Settings

Discussions, Media, and Spotlights archives are linked to from the bottom right of the Posts tab

Subtle Changes

Email notifications don't get sent from the beta server. You'll just have to trust us that they work.

We removed the ability to set a default role. This was to ensure that you always see content/updates specific to your role at the university. This mostly affects staff who set their default role to student to see what's going on, but would then miss updates targeted at staff. You can still change your role to any other role, under your name.

All notification settings you previously had for groups have been set to the default of "Important Only".

Mobile

Updated mobile start page to match the new layout, note the two tabs: Updates and More

Coming Next Week

Promotions - sometime next week along with an explanation post

Updated daily summary email

Prettier notification emails

Coming Later This Summer

Updated Events calendar

View statistics on posts (for group admins)

Changes based on feedback/performance

Post feedback below! Be honest.

Collaborate with Classmates via Virtual Study Spaces

<Tagline>Powered by Blackboard Instant Messenger</Tagline>

This summer, students have a new option for virtual collaboration: Study Spaces powered by Blackboard Instant Messenger.

Blackboard Instant Messenger (IM) is an academic-centric instant collaboration app designed to promote learning and support virtual group work. Blackboard IM synchronizes with our Blackboard Learn course enrollments, which means that students are automatically connected with other Blackboard IM users enrolled in the same courses.

Blackboard IM includes a range of features to allow everyone to collaborate and communicate quickly and easily.

Chat via keyboard to communicate quickly and efficiently with your classmates

Call via audio or video for more natural communication with one-on-one or group conversations

Collaborate in real time to share ideas with others

Screen Share for real-time display of any document or application on your computer

Use whiteboard tools to annotate PowerPoint and images

Faculty and departments can use Blackboard IM to set up virtual office hours and virtual support centers, allowing queues for individualized attention.

Blackboard IM is similar to many other instant messaging tools including Skype, Google Talk, AIM, Windows Live, etc., however, Blackboard IM is fully integrated into the Blackboard Learn system. Each semester, courses will synchronize and provide a robust contact list. There's no need to figure out what app to use for chatting or keep track of everyone's logins and handles -- Blackboard IM will be ready! Just login and start collaborating.

Need to work on a big group project? Practice a presentation with a partner? Study with a classmate for a test? Try the new virtual study spaces option through Blackboard IM.

To access Blackboard IM:

Log into Blackboard and access the My Blackboard dashboard

Log into any SU2015 or later course. Click on Tools -> Blackboard IM.

For more information about Blackboard IM, please check out the FAQs or open an RT ticket.

Reminder: Campus Website Upgrade This Saturday Morning

<Tagline>Campus Website upgrade Saturday at 8am</Tagline>

We wanted to remind everyone that on Saturday June 13th around 8am we will be migrating the main campus website environment so it is running on new hardware and software. This past fall an emergency preparedness exercise was conducted by the campus and it became clear that in the event of an emergency one of our main methods of communications, the campus web server, would be unable to respond to the demands placed on it.
Lastly, I will be asking RT coordinators from each area to participate in testing an upgraded version of RT. If testing goes well I anticipate the new version will be in place by August. The current version 4.0.21 will be upgraded to 4.2.11 which has been out for a while and considered very stable. Like other systems it is important to stay current with a vendors product to get the benefits of new options as well as support.

Please contact me if you have any questions or suggestions.

Thank you

Joe Kirby

Locating Our Confidential Data

<Tagline>Identity Finder is being installed to help reduce our risk.</Tagline>

In an effort to try and detect confidential data on university-owned systems and reduce the risk that UMBC will be the source of a data breach, UMBC has worked with the university system to purchase a program called Identity Finder. Identity Finder is a program that runs in the background on computers and looks for information like SSNs and credit card numbers. The program will make a list of the files that contain this information, but will not modify or delete the files. Once we receive the lists of files that possibly contain confidential data, we will work with each machine's owner to determine how to best manage data.

We have been running the program, for almost a year, in the departments that process and store SSNs and credit cards as a standard part of their business. Starting this week, we are pushing the program out to all centrally managed UMBC machines. The software will be installed automatically on each system, through Active Directory, and members of the UMBC community should not need to do anything. If anyone sees an impact from the installation of Identity Finder or has any questions, they should contact the DoIT Technology Support Center at x53838.
