Fall 2014 Blackboard Down For Maintenance, 12-5 PM EST Winter Courses Remain Online & Available
UPDATE: The Fall 2014 course site is back online after less than 2 hours of maintenance.

The legacy UMBC Blackboard site, which currently hosts Fall 2014 courses until they are migrated to our new Blackboard site, will be offline for emergency maintenance from 12-5 pm EST on Wednesday, January 7, 2015. Communities and organizations will also be unavailable during this downtime.

This maintenance period should allow faculty to export older courses from the UMBC Blackboard site without experiencing the known issue with invalid files and import the course content to the new Blackboard site for Spring 2015.

This downtime will not affect Winter 2015 courses as those are hosted on the new Blackboard site now. Faculty, staff & students may access Winter 2015 courses through one of these paths:

UPDATE: This known issue has been addressed. For additional information, please review this FAQ.

Normally, instructors can create a course export package by navigating to Control Panel > Packages and Utilities > Export/Archive Course > Export Package.

However, when a course is exported from UMBC’s Blackboard system and imported into another Blackboard system -- like the one Blackboard will run for Winter and Spring 2015 courses -- faculty may receive a “invalid file” error message.  


Basically, the files still exist, but if the course has been repeatedly exported and imported over many semesters, which has been UMBC’s practice, all that exists on the new Blackboard system are links to the files on UMBC’s system, not the files themselves. This problem should not exist for courses that were originally created after Summer 2012, as all of the content for succeeding semesters was migrated to the new Blackboard system during the Fall 2014 semester.

What is the workaround?

The course files -- not just links to them -- on UMBC’s Blackboard system will need to be updated in the source course prior to exporting and importing the source course into the course on the new Blackboard system.

To UMBC Students, Faculty and Staff,

As the semester and year come to a close, we wanted to share highlights from the most recent DoIT News Update. First, as previously announced, UMBC Blackboard will now be hosted by Blackboard itself:

NOTE: This link will be active through 12/28/14. On 12/29, the myUMBC Bb icon/link and blackboard.umbc.edu will be used to access our new Blackboard system.

Second, Fall 2014 Bb courses will be migrated to our Bb managed hosted (MH) system after final grades are submitted on 1/5/15, the same day Winter 2015 courses begin. To access FA2014 Bb courses between 12/29/14 and 1/5/15, faculty can do so through my.umbc.edu/go/bbfall that will be prominently displayed in myUMBC. 

Finally, DoIT's Instructional Technology staff are offering several scheduled training sessions to help faculty prepare for Winter and Spring courses, and to learn about helpful resources in Blackboard such as the Grade Center. These sessions will be delivered simultaneously in person and virtually via Bb Collaborate.  Faculty may also want to check out the following:

To support faculty ongoing Blackboard support needs,  DoIT will be offering additional weekly drop-in hours beginning Wednesday, January 7th. A DoIT staff member will be available to work one-on-one with users who show up during the designated times.

Drop-In sessions this term are intended to support instructors' adaptation to the new managed hosting environment and will include assistance for the following tools:
Given variation in user needs and scheduling, the Drop-In format will be as follows:
  1. Orientation (5 minutes): A quick overview of what the tool does. If all you want is a demo, come early.
  2. Recommendations (10 minutes): 1-2 tips based on our observations from providing faculty support, as well identification of effective practices  and practitioners.
  3. Q & A (40 minutes): This is your time. What do you want to know? What's a problem you'd like to solve or a new opportunity you'd like to explore?
In addition to the F2F sessions, DoIT will also offer virtual drop-in sessions using Blackboard's web-conferencing tool, Collaborate. Any faculty members with Bb questions may participate in these online sessions between 12:00 – 1:00 PM on the appointed Wednesday by visiting the following link: www.umbc.edu/go/collaborate

Please note that these are not formal Blackboard training classes. Additional dates and times may be added as demand warrants.
