Storage Failure Affects Blackboard

Today from approximately noon to 2pm the Blackboard server was unavailable. This was due a controller on a storage array going bad. Unfortunately, the server attached to this storage was Blackboard. We have had some issues with this storage array for the past few weeks. The vendor (Sun) has been actively working with us to analyze logs to identify the root cause of our problems. On Saturday we implemented a temporary fix that appears to have fixed one issue. However, today we had an unrelated hardware failure. We are awaiting word back from Sun but we expect to have them install a new controller sometime this evening. Thank you for your patience.

Coming Soon: Group Notifications

<Tagline>An easier way to stay on top of your groups.</Tagline>

After a bit of a break, I'm pleased to announce the upcoming release of a new feature for myUMBC: Group Notifications.

One thing we've heard from group members is that once they join a group, they have to repeatedly go back to the group page to see what's new. To make life easier, whenever new content is posted to a group, myUMBC will send a short email to all group members with a link to the new post. In addition to an email, when you log in to myUMBC, you will see a summary of new posts in the Activity dashboard in the upper-right of myUMBC next to your name.

Notification Settings

There will also be new page under your personal settings that will allow you to configure when and from whom you receive notifications:

You will have to option of when to receive email notifications: immediately (the default), daily, or never. Even if you choose "never" you will still see the notifications in the Activity dashboard.

You will be able to choose which groups you want to receive notifications from. If you uncheck a group, you will receive no emails or entries in your Activity dashboard.

We hope this will make it easier for people to remain engaged with their groups, while providing an easy way to prevent yourself from being overrun with email.

We expect to enable group notifications some time this weekend.

We look forward to your feedback.

Reminder: 24/7 Bb Support Now For Students Only

    UPDATED Dec. 3, 2010:

DoIT encourages faculty to continue to steer their students to the 24/7 Bb Support Portal as a "first line of defense" for assistance with any technical Blackboard questions. Typically the questions that students have about Blackboard are less complex than those faculty have, and the 24/7 Bb Support team has been successful in resolving those issues quickly. Based on a survey conducted this summer, 77% of respondents reported that they were satisfied, or highly satisfied with their 24/7 Bb Support experience, and 85 % would recommend it to others. Reminding students of this service should help reduce the default technical support role that many faculty end up playing now.
    --------------------

In late August, DoIT announced a change in the way faculty receive Blackboard support. This change was made due to faculty feedback regarding the quality and consistency of support received through the 24/7 Bb Support provided by Presidium. As of October 1, faculty seeking Bb support should contact the UMBC Help Desk at 455-3838, where they will be routed to UMBC support staff. After hours, faculty are asked to submit an online request for help through the RT System at http://rt.umbc.edu. 24/7 Support from Presidium will still be available to students only, and DoIT encourages faculty to convey this to their classes.

Thank you for your patience during this transition. We hope that this change will provide the best support possible for both faculty and students.

    Update at 7:30AM
UMBC’s Blackboard system is currently down. At approximately 12:30 am this morning we experienced a failure of our Blackboard server virtualization system (VMware). DoIT staff have worked with the vendor throughout the night to isolate the problem. As of 7:15 am the vendor has proposed a solution which should restore the Blackboard system in the next 2-3 hours (e.g. approximately 10:15AM). We apologize for the inconvenience and will update you as we know more.
    --------------------------------------
    Update at 5:03AM
The Blackboard system went offline early on Monday morning. DoIT staff have isolated the issue to the server virtualization system (VMware) used to host the Blackboard system. We are currently working with the vendor to restore services. We will post additional information later today.

DoIT has worked with Blackboard over the past week to determine the cause of this error. Earlier this week DoIT was provided a resolution which has been installed and tested on the Bb test server. Unfortunately this resolution will cause the following known issue to occur: any attached file with either a semicolon (;) or a pound sign (#) in the filename will result in an error when a user tries to access the file. The workaround for this issue is to avoid using those characters when naming files.

We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience that this down time may cause.

Quiz Errors on Blackboard- UPDATE

    UPDATE:
DoIT staff implemented the suggested fix during the scheduled downtime on Friday evening, Sept. 10th. This fix should provide a resolution to the "no action config" errors in quizzes and surveys.
    ------------
DoIT has received numerous reports today from students who have been getting error messages when they take quizzes and surveys on Blackboard. Typically the student finishes answering the questions and then after submitting the quiz, this message is generated:

No action config found for the specified url.
For reference, the Error ID is db51608a-8c02-496d-a662-79a7003470ed.
    Thursday, September 2, 2010 3:20:33 PM EDT

This error is not generated all of the time, and at this point does not seem to be dependent on either operating system, or browser. We have contacted Blackboard for support in troubleshooting the issue, and will update the campus community as soon as we have a resolution.
