LDAP-Master and Webadmin downtime on 8/9 at 4pm

On Friday, August 9th starting at 4pm LDAP-Master and Webadmin will be taken down for system maintenance. During this time account creations and password changes will be unavailable. Account authentication and logins will not be affected during this downtime.

The maintenance window will allow staff to apply needed security and application updates. The outage window is expected to last two hours with services being restored by 5pm on Friday, August 9th.

During the outage window account creations will be queued and then processed upon restoration of services. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Technology Support Center at x53838.

At this time the backup power system is in a depreciated state and we are taking precautionary steps to migrate some services to a secondary data center. We will continue to provide updates as they become available. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

As part of our ongoing commitment to security, the Unix Infrastructure group will be conducting its quarterly system patching on Saturday, August 3rd and Friday, August 9th. While many of the systems will be patched without any service disruption, there are some systems which require the downtime of key services. The schedule below outlines which key services will be offline and for how long.

Saturday, 8/3/2019 between 9am and 11am(most systems will only be down for a short period during this time):

myUMBC lite page will be up resulting in reduced myUMBC functionality
Wiki will be unavailable
The sites (wordpress) web hosting environment will be unreachable

Friday, 8/9/2019 between 5pm and 10pm (most systems will only be down for a shorter period during this time):

The web hosting environments (virthost) will be partially unavailable (pages will be available but any database calls will not work)
Access to Cyrus and UMBC Webmail (accounts not migrated to UMBC Gmail)

All mail will be queued up and delivered after the server is patched

All HFS (user) servers will be offline
Certain software licenses will be unavailable (autodesk, cadence, idl, schrodinger, xilinx, mathematica)

In the August update to Ultra courses, faculty can create question pools to help build assessments quickly and better support academic integrity. Instructors can add questions to from all existing tests, assignments and question banks in their courses, and those question pools will distribute different sets of questions to students.

Additionally, Ultra courses will now support a much needed feature in assessments: Hiding answers on a test while it is in progress. Faculty will be able to check a setting to show or hide the correct answers on a test. At this time, instructors must disable the setting after all students complete the test if they want students to later see the correct answers.

Organizations and communities may now adopt Ultra after the August update. Please consult the Instructional Technology office to determine whether converting or redesigning is best for your organization.

Course shells for FA2019 were created on July 28, 2019. Both Ally and the Ultra Course Preview tool are enabled in all courses, allowing faculty to review course materials for accessibility and to explore and adopt Ultra during the phased roll-out of Ultra.

The next Blackboard Learn update will be posted to our test site around August 13th and pushed to production around September 5th. Faculty who are interested in test driving new features before they are released to production should open an RT ticket to request early access.

The Ultra Course Preview setting is again enabled in FA2019 courses to allow faculty adoption during the phased roll-out of Ultra as previously announced. The Ultra Course Preview tool allows faculty to convert an existing Original course and see what it looks like in Ultra.

The new accessibility tool Ally is also enabled in all new course shells starting this past summer. Ally automatically scans uploaded and created course content, then performs a series of steps to make that content more accessible. Please review the Ally FAQs for more information about the accessibility indicators on course content and alternative formats, or sign up for an Ally orientation session.

About Course Creation

Bb shells for FA2019 are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, field or discussion) listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC), provided that there is an instructor of record listed. As new course sections and/or instructors are added to the SOC by Department Scheduling Coordinators, corresponding Bb shells are automatically generated overnight.

If you are an instructor, and your name is not associated with the course you are teaching in the SOC, please see your Departmental Scheduling Coordinator to resolve the issue. Once you are listed in the SOC, your Bb course shell will be created automatically.
If you and your Department Scheduling Coordinator believe you are correctly assigned as the instructor of record in the SOC and you do not see your course shell in Blackboard, please submit a Request Tracker (RT) ticket via my.umbc.edu/help.
If you need a Bb shell for a research or independent study course, please submit a new course request.

Instructors who teach multiple sections of the same course will find those enrollments merged into one Bb course shell. These sections may be split upon request by an RT ticket, which we recommend submitting at least one week before the semester starts, if not as soon as courses are created in Blackboard.

Student enrollment in Bb mirrors the official registration in SA and updates hourly. However, courses are not accessible to students by default until the instructor of record makes them available.
