On Friday, March 1, 2019, DoIT's Instructional Technology Team held its 4th annual TechFest.  As part of TechFest, participants were asked to complete evaluation surveys for each of the three presentation sessions and the escape room and a final survey evaluating the event as a whole. Blackboard Ultra Early Adopter Raffle


Since the beginning of the Fall 2018 term, faculty have had the option to adopt the Blackboard Ultra Experience for their courses. All faculty who opted into the Ultra course interface in the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 terms were automatically entered into a raffle for an Amazon Fire HD Tablet. Register for a M.O.S.T. Regional Forum on OER in Higher Education

Are you new to open educational resources (OER) and interested in learning how to adopt or scale OER in your course or across your institution?  Register to join the Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) Initiative at one of three regional forums across Maryland to participate in interactive sessions, discussions, and hands-on workshops on OER in higher education.  These day-long regional forums are targeted to higher education faculty, instructional designers, librarians, and administrators interested in getting an introduction to openly licensed materials, finding resources to support OER adoption, and joining discussions on OER accessibility, quality, and impact on student success.  Attendees will have an opportunity to network, learn, and collaborate with colleagues from across Maryland’s 2- and 4-year higher education institutions.

Call for Proposals - Regional OER Forum Poster Showcase
We are inviting faculty, staff, and administrators from Maryland higher education institutions to present their OER stories at a poster showcase at one or more regional forums.  Are you passionate about the use of OER and interested in engaging others in adopting OER by sharing your experiences – both what has worked and what hasn’t? Have you created new open content within your field or discipline? Do you have OER content adoption strategies to share? Has the use of OER led to broader redesigns of courses, changes to pedagogy, greater student engagement, or increased student learning?  Share your story at the M.O.S.T. Regional OER Forums.  

Submit your proposal for a poster showcase by 11:59 p.m. ET on Friday, March 22, 2019. Applicants will be notified about acceptance by March 27, 2019.

Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) State Summit

In addition to the Regional Forums, on May 28, 2019 we will be co-hosting the second Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) State Summit with the Congress of Academic Library Directors (CALD) of Maryland at the Maritime Conference Center in Linthicum Heights, MD.  This second summit will build on the first M.O.S.T. Summit held in December 2017 with a focus on strategically building capacity within and across Maryland higher education institutions to increase access, affordability, and achievement for students and is ideally suited for institutions wishing to send a team of individuals charged with making OER adoptions strategic, sustainable, and impactful at their institution.  Learn more about the M.O.S.T. State Summit and the topics that will be featured.

For months now, newly accepted students have been facing the important decision of where to attend college. For most, one of the biggest factors will be how much money they are able to secure in financial aid. In order to help students make this crucial, time-sensitive decision, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships (OFAS) at UMBC makes it a top priority to provide students with all the information and resources they need as soon as possible.

To do so, OFAS has picked up DocuSign, the electronic signature and digital workflow platform being utilized all throughout UMBC. By converting numerous key forms to DocuSign, OFAS hopes to expedite and simplify the process of securing financial aid for both students and staff. This includes giving students and parents direct, immediate access to the Scholarship Agreement, Loan Increase, Dependent Verification and other such forms through a secure email. The signer can then follow useful tooltips that guide them step by step through the form before sending it on its way with just a click of the mouse. A process that once took many days can now be completed in mere hours as DocuSign uses notifications and reminders to encourage rapid compliance.

OFAS staff worked hard with the Division of Information Technology to make these forms as intuitive as possible. For starters, these forms can pull information from UMBC databases and PeopleSoft to prepopulate numerous fields before the student even opens the document. Once the student enters the form, the fields that haven’t been filled out for them will contain restrictions such as character limits and formatting guides that can prevent the student from submitting the form with incorrect information. If mistakes do make it through, OFAS staff can terminate the form and resend it immediately along with an email clarifying what needs to be fixed. Compliance Specialist Joe Scott says that this flexibility along with quick communication makes it much easier to process these forms efficiently while also improving the experience for students and parents.

Associate Director Cory Ziegenfuss praises the significant reduction of time and paper spent signing, processing and storing these forms. Staff can assign the resources they’ve saved using DocuSign on other projects, thus improving the overall efficiency of the department.

Moving forward, OFAS will begin to develop new DocuSign projects, including forms for their Work Study program. By continuing to pursue efficient solutions, OFAS is helping UMBC advance as a modern university.

Beginning over the weekend and continuing into today a number of users and phone numbers may have experienced intermittent phonemail service including both voicemail and call processing boxes. We are experiencing hardware failures in one of the campus phonemail nodes and have been working with our vendor to diagnose the problem. 

We will be doing an emergency repair starting today between 3 and 4 that will affect access to part of the voicemail and call processing boxes on campus. 

During the repair window the campus should expect some system voicemail outages as we will need to take some systems offline to install new hardware. We anticipate this outage being around 2 hours, after which time the entire system will need to be taken off-line for 20 minutes to re-sync the new hardware. This larger outage will not occur before 5:30pm tonight.

We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause and the short notice. The system has been failing at an alarming rate, and we feel that we have to act now to prevent more severe outages.

Beginning over the weekend and continuing into today some users may have experienced intermittent phonemail service including both voicemail and call processing boxes. We are experiencing hardware failures in one of the campus phonemail nodes and have been working with our vendor to diagnose the problem. We are trying to conduct a repair as quickly as possible before a more severe failure occurs.


During the repair window the campus should expect some system voicemail outages as we will need to take some systems offline to install new hardware. DoIT will communicate details of the repair window when that information becomes available. In the meantime we will be working to maintain services as best we can given current circumstances.

The Plan Counts report located in the Student Records and Enrollment folder has been updated as follows:

·         The report now displays a distinct headcount column.

·         Has the ability to see counts of both Enrolled Students and Not Enrolled Students based on the parameter Student Term Status

 

The Plan Counts report located in the Census Data > Student Term Headcount folder has been updated also. It now displays a distinct headcount column, but will continue to only show counts of enrolled students.

A new report, Plans Without Enrollment, is now available in REX to assist with departments in knowing what Plan/sub plan students are not enrolling in.  This report displays those that are active and has had no enrollments in the past 3 or 5 years.  Data is grouped by Plan Objective, Reporting Plan, Plan, Sub plan along with the last term there was enrollment. 


This report can be accessed by going to rex.umbc.edu, clicking on 'Guided Reports', then navigating to: Student Records and Enrollment > Plan Enrollment

Early adoption is growing at UMBC as more than 100 faculty opted to use the new Ultra Course View during the SP2019 semester. An additional 25 faculty tried Ultra using the sandbox shells created for exploring the new course interface.

Compared to FA2018, Ultra adoption increased by more than 900% -- from 14 courses to 145 courses. UMBC faculty also use Blackboard differently than most schools, further demonstrating ongoing engagement in innovation.

March 28 update: 148 courses are now using Ultra

Although Ultra does not support all features and tools currently in the Original version of Blackboard Learn, many faculty jumped into Ultra to benefit from the streamlined workflows. “I love that the grades don't post until I post them,” said Kate Drabinski, who converted one of her courses to Ultra. “I can post all the grades at once rather than having students get their grades at different times over 1-2 weeks.”

For some departments, Ultra was also an easy stepping stone to innovate. For example, Emergency Health Services adopted Ultra in 53% of its SP2019 course offerings. Other programs, such as the online Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, coordinated training for instructors to support Ultra adoption. Use of the new course interface grew in Art, English, Psychology, Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication, and Health Administration and Policy. These departments and more can benefit from Ultra Faculty Ambassadors as peer experts.

All faculty who tried or adopted Ultra by January 31 were entered in a drawing to win an Echo Dot. Winners will be announced at TechFest on March 1, 2019. Additionally, at the Technology Test Kitchen, faculty can explore Ultra, plan an Ultra course adoption roadmap, ask questions about Ultra, or meet some of our Ultra Faculty Ambassadors.
