<Title>Ultra Faculty Ambassadors Share Best Practices &amp; Resources</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>DoIT believes faculty are important partners and will play an essential role during the </span><a href="http://umbc.edu/go/ultra" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Ultra migration</span></a><span>. The new Blackboard course interface is </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/v4ZnB" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>significantly different</span></a><span> from the Original course we’ve had for the last fifteen years, marking a notable change for UMBC faculty. <Title>LDAP-Master and Webadmin downtime on 2/21 at 2pm</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>On Thursday, February 22nd starting at 2pm LDAP-Master and Webadmin will be taken down for system maintenance.  During this time account creations and password changes will be unavailable.  Account authentication and logins will not be affected during this downtime.  </span></p><p><br></p><p><span>The maintenance window will allow staff to apply needed security and application updates.  The outage window is expected to last two hours with services being restored by 4pm on Thursday, February 22nd.</span></p><p><br></p><p><span>During the outage window account creations will be queued and then processed upon restoration of services.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Technology Support Center at x53838.</span></p></div>

A 2014 graduate of the </span><a href="https://mcs.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Media &amp; Communications Studies</span></a><span> (MCS) &amp; </span><a href="https://amst.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>American Studies</span></a><span> programs, Roddy brings a rare combination of technical expertise as a video producer as well as excellent people and customer service skills. </span></p><p><span>In addition to daily responsibilities managing the Studio, Dustin played a key role in the successful partnership between DoIT, Athletics and Media Communication Studies to lead UMBC's live streaming of men's and women's basketball on ESPN3 that was </span><a href="https://magazine.umbc.edu/broadcastready/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>featured</span></a><span> in </span><span>UMBC Magazine</span><span>. He also worked with VPC Communications, owned by '86 Alum <strong>Eli Eisenberg</strong>, to oversee the </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=69662" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Studio's upgrade to high definition</span></a><span> (HD) broadcast quality production facilities, which supports numerous MCS student interns hired by Athletics to air 30+ </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=67599" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>ESPN3 broadcasts</span></a><span> each year. </span></p><p><span>Dustin’s good working relationships were invaluable during and after UMBC's </span><a href="https://news.umbc.edu/ncaa-journey-spotlights-umbcs-national-excellence-from-court-to-classroom/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>historic upset</span></a><span> of #1 seed UVA in the 2018 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Late that evening and all during the next two days, as the spotlight shone brightly on UMBC, Dustin helped educate the CBS "futures" producer who was only assigned the next day. She literally knew nothing about UMBC, so Dustin was feeding her information, web links and video archive footage with little more than a moment's notice. Eventually, Dustin’s in-game and behind-the-scenes footage was also on display in the CBS Sports retrospective, </span><a href="https://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/tv/z-on-tv-blog/bs-fe-zontv-umbc-basketball-cbs-20181118-story.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>“Four Sides of the Story,”</span></a><span> that aired this past fall.  </span></p><span>In addition to working for UMBC, Dustin is an accomplished videographer, producer and photographer who has worked freelance broadcasts for the Golf Channel, ESPN and Terra Firma productions in Philadelphia. Dustin also enjoys mentoring students who have gone on to work with local TV stations as well as the Baltimore Ravens and Orioles. He will also help mentor </span><a href="https://www.enrole.com/umbc/jsp/session.jsp?sessionId=2196YTHYOUT103A301&amp;courseId=YOUT103&amp;categoryId=91E36858" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>aspiring YouTubers</span></a><span> during the 2019</span><a href="https://sea.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span> Summer Enrichment Academy</span></a><span> (SEA), and he is working with DoIT’s </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/itnm/staff/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>instructional technology team</span></a><span> to develop and award a series of video production related “badges” for key skills and competencies.</span></span></div>

<Title>Quarterly patching downtime on 2/22/2019 and 3/9/2019</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>As part of our ongoing commitment to security, the Unix Infrastructure group will be conducting its quarterly system patching on Friday, February 22nd and Saturday, March 9th.  While many of the systems will be patched without any service disruption, there are some systems which require the downtime of key services.  The schedule below outlines which key services will be offline and for how long.</span></p><p><span>Friday, 2/22/2019 between 5pm and 9pm (most systems will only be down for a short period during this time): </span></p><ul><li><span>The web hosting environments (virthost) will be partially unavailable (pages will be available but any database calls will not work)</span></li><li><span>Access to Cyrus and UMBC Webmail (accounts not migrated to UMBC Gmail)</span></li><ul><li><span>All mail will be queued up and delivered after the server is patched</span></li></ul><li>All HFS (user) servers will be offline</li><li><span>Certain software licenses will be unavailable (autodesk, cadence, idl, schrodinger, xilinx, mathematica)</span></li></ul><p><span>Saturday, 3/9/2019 between 9am and 11am(most systems will only be down for a short period during this time):</span></p><ul><li><span>myUMBC lite page will be up resulting in reduced myUMBC functionality</span></li><li><span>Wiki will be unavailable</span></li><li><span>The sites (wordpress) web hosting environment will be unreachable</span></li></ul><p><br></p><p><span>Please let us know if you have any concerns or questions.</span></p><p><span>Thanks!</span></p><p><span>Tim Champ</span></p><p><span>Manager of Unix Infrastructure</span></p><p><span>UMBC DoIT</span></p></div>

(Search for TSC Student Consultant.)</p><p><br></p><h3>TSC Student Consultant Job Description</h3><p>Technology Support Center (TSC) student consultants are the first points of technical contact for the UMBC community and those who do well often go on to work in other areas of the Division of Information Technology (DoIT). Minimally, consultants are expected to provide initial triage and support for a wide range of information technologies including accounts, hardware, instructional technologies, networking, software, telecommunications, and basic web development.</p><h4>Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:</h4><ul><li>Provide technical assistance to users by phone, online and in person;</li><li>Answer TSC phones in a professional and courteous manner;</li><li>Create, update and resolve tickets in the Request Tracker (RT) ticketing system;</li><li>Create, update, suggest and recommend relevant FAQ articles to users (<a href="http://www.umbc.edu/faq">www.umbc.edu/faq</a>);</li><li>Provide direct assistance to users on technical issues they cannot easily resolve on their own;</li><li>Complete in-person or online training about quality support as defined in umbc.edu/go/ticketrubric;</li><li>Respond to all work-related communications in a timely manner;</li><li>Escalate urgent problems to the Full-Time staff, as appropriate.</li></ul><h4>Required Skills and Experience</h4><ul><li>Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate by phone or in person.</li><li>Demonstrated writing ability.</li><li>Demonstrated ability to achieve successful outcomes in handling difficult situations and customers.</li><li>Demonstrated analytical and troubleshooting skills.</li><li>Ability &amp; willingness to learn coupled with a clear understanding of one’s technical abilities, so as to triage and escalate an issue that leads to an effective solution for the user.</li></ul></span></div>

But do you know what technologies are available to you as an instructor at UMBC?  Although there are many tools you can easily access to enhance both engagement and the learning outcomes of your students, below are some of the tech tools we support that you may want to add to your teaching tool box.</span></p><p><span><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/instructional-technology/events/66703" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Register for TechFest 2019 on Friday, March 1st</a> where you'll have the opportunity to try out the tools below:</span></p><br><p><span><strong>Blackboard Ultra</strong></span><span><strong>.</strong>  Did you know that UMBC is planning to transition from </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=78853" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Blackboard Learn to Blackboard Ultra (Bb UX)</span></a><span>?  Bb UX is a new Learning Management System with simplified features that make your course mobile-friendly and accessible to students.  All instructors now have access to a Bb UX Course Preview when they log into Blackboard, so you can see what your current Blackboard Learn course looks like in the new system.  Not using Blackboard yet? When using this tool with Blackboard, you can require students to check-in through a live session you create, send emails to absent students, and allow students to see their attendance records.  </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=67993865" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Get started with Qwickly</span></a><span> to make your attendance tasks easier!</span></p><br><p><span><strong>Panopto</strong></span><span><strong>.</strong>  Has anyone ever asked if your lectures were recorded and available for review?  Well you can make these available to your students using Panopto and do it right in Blackboard!  </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=79481" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Panopto now replaces TechSmith Relay</span></a><span> and provides the capability to perform screen casting with voice, incorporate interactive quizzes right inside the video, and import results into your Blackboard grade book.  This tool is also great for creating or identifying and adding supplemental lecture material for students to view outside of class.
