DoIT's Dustin Roddy Receives UMBC Athletics' Gritty Award Limelight shines on behind-the-scenes producer
During its annual "Gritty Awards" last Wednesday, May 7, UMBC Athletics went "off script" and surprised DoIT's Dustin Roddy, by awarding him the 2017-18 Leon Upshur Memorial Award for "outstanding service to UMBC Athletics." Upshur was a much-loved equipment room supervisor for more than 20 years, who "asked for and received very little fanfare" said Sports Information Director Steve Levy. "He simply got the job done quietly and efficiently."

"I was completely shocked," says the New Media Studio's Roddy, who was broadcasting the event on Facebook Live when Levy called him up to the stage (see time code 45:16 of the UMBC Athletics FB Live recording | FB login required). "This really meant a lot to me."

Clearly, the feeling was mutual as Roddy got a rousing ovation from the crowd that included several hundred UMBC athletes who, Levy said, may have recognized Dustin from his coverage of their games, "but not known his name." In addition to traveling with Men's Basketball for what has become unique, behind-the-scenes footage of the team's historic upset of #1 overall seed Virginia on March 16, Dustin has been key to DoIT's support of the ESPN3 live sports broadcasting partnership with Athletics and Media and Communications Studies (MCS) for the past two seasons. He's been particularly instrumental in -- and proud of -- helping to mentor MCS students who now largely make up most of each game's production crew.

Blackboard's navigation to courses will be upgraded on Friday, May 25, 2018 beginning at 3 PM EST as part of DoIT’s routine Blackboard maintenance. This upgrade will modernize the overall dashboard with the new Ultra Experience base navigation.

Important: Courses will NOT change in appearance or functionality.

No downtime is expected, but the login page located at blackboard.umbc.edu will be temporarily unavailable while it is also updated by DoIT. Faculty, staff, and students can still log into Blackboard by clicking on the Blackboard icon via myUMBC or going to my.umbc.edu/go/blackboard.

Once the Blackboard upgrade is complete, please clear your Internet browser cache and cookies before logging in using these step-by-step instructions. 

How does the Ultra Experience change Blackboard for faculty & students?


Redesigned Dashboard - Upon logging into Blackboard, faculty and students will notice a new look for Blackboard. Central site navigation for courses, organizations, tools, etc. is relocated to the left menu and there are no more tabs at the top. Your name, user profile, and personal settings will also appear in the left panel.

Activity Stream - The activity stream captures all the up-to-the-minute action in your courses. 

You will also see links for grades, calendar, messages, and global tools. Courses will open in a layer over the base navigation. Please see our FAQ collection and glossary about the Ultra Experience.

What is the timeline for the Ultra Experience at UMBC?

Faculty and students should expect no other changes to their courses at this time. However, the Ultra Experience is an innovative, learner-centric redesign of Blackboard and UMBC recognizes the change in course interface will take some time to get used to. Training and course redesign support will be available to faculty until the projected final rollover to Ultra in FA2019.

Among other things, StudyTree can help students find and form study groups with classmates, connect with campus tutors, and receive feedback from an AI digital “coach” called Leon to get and stay on track for academic success.

During this initial deployment, the application garnered approximately 1,100 active users – approximately 10% of the undergraduate population – and a majority of an informal poll in CHEM 102 “Introductory Chemistry” indicated they would be interested in trying this technology in future academic terms if it were available. The good news? It will be!

DoIT is continuing the StudyTree pilot through the 2018-19 academic year. It is free to all students and faculty. To address the campus need for a screencasting solution, DoIT will be replacing TechSmith Relay later this summer. Beginning with SU2018, the UMBC Blackboard (Bb) site will receive monthly updates as part of Blackboard’s continuous delivery model, which is a requirement for UMBC to move its Bb system to the Ultra Experience next summer.

Monthly updates feature tool enhancements, new features, and, as needed, maintenance items, which allows DoIT to deliver additional innovation to support teaching and learning to the campus community on a more consistent basis. These updates will be featured on the Instructional Technology group at myUMBC and on the New Features & Updates FAQ
  • When: Monthly, usually Friday evenings (beginning as early as 5 PM) 
  • Why: Updates to core tools and services as required by Blackboard, new features & enhancements 
  • What happens: No downtime. Allow up to 24 hours for all updates to propagate throughout the system. Some tools and services may be slower to respond as those backend processes restart across supporting servers. Although users should not notice any disruption in service, we advise faculty to avoid scheduling tests due dates during these periods. 
Previously, UMBC scheduled downtime downtime for monthly server updates and planned major software updates once per year. The schedule was revised in August 2015 after UMBC moved Blackboard to managed hosting and updated in July 2017 with the migration to Blackboard cloud environment.

This software is available to all UMBC faculty, staff, and graduate students. It is similar to SPSS, R, and SAS in functionality. While SPSS is typically used in fields such as Sociology and Psychology, R by computer science and math domains, and SAS for administrative functionality, Stata is widely adopted for econometric modeling. The licensed multicore package, Stata/MP, will allow for accelerated processing with larger variable sets and more observations than either Stata/SE or Stata/IC. Both flexible and powerful, the off-the-shelf functionality of this software makes it the Porsche of quantitative packages.

The pilot was designed to support faculty as they explore, design, and teach with the Ultra Experience and allowed UMBC to provide feedback to Blackboard developers and support staff about the Ultra Experience.

More than 78% of students participating in the pilot indicated they liked the Ultra Experience compared to the current Blackboard interface and that the simplified and responsive design was easier to use and more accessible on mobile devices.

Some pilot faculty will continue to teach in the Ultra Experience this summer with additional faculty preparing to teach in the fall. Faculty participants will share their experiences at several professional development and peer networking opportunities in FA2018.

Throughout the summer, Instructional Technology will provide information to the campus about opportunities to review, develop, and teach using the new Blackboard interface. Currently, two DoIT student staff members are -- or will be -- leading both UMBC student governments.

Last week, Collin Sullivan (pictured at right), an Economics and Information Systems double major, and instructional technology student consultant, was elected President of the undergraduate Student Government Association (SGA). He joins Roy Prouty, a Computer Science graduate student, and high performance computing (HPC) student consultant in Enterprise Infrastructure Support (EIS), who is completing his tenure as President of the Graduate Student Association (GSA).

Congrats and thanks to both Collin and Roy for their service, and also continuing a tradition of DoIT leadership in UMBC’s shared governance.
