<Title>Kirby Earns Presidential Distinguished Staff Award</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Congratulations to DoIT Assistant Vice President </span><span><strong>Joe Kirby</strong></span><span>, who has been selected to receive the 2018 <a href="https://facultystaffawards.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Presidential Distinguished Staff Award</a>. Along with other recipients and their families, Joe will be honored at the <span><span>Presidential Faculty and Staff Awards celebration</span></span> on Wednesday, April 4, at noon in the UC Ballroom. The award also includes a one-time, $2,500 addition to pay.</span></p><p><span>“I am truly honored to be recognized and grateful for the opportunity to work at UMBC,” says Kirby, who was also </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=64442" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>recognized</span></a><span> for 30 years of service to the campus in 2016. </span></p><p><span>Kirby is now the third DoIT staff member to receive the Presidential Distinguished Staff Award, following </span><span><strong>Kevin Joseph</strong></span><span>, Director of Business Intelligence in </span><a href="https://facultystaffawards.umbc.edu/presidential-and-board-of-regents-award-2014/#joseph" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>2014</span></a><span>, and Vice President of IT and Chief Information Officer (CIO) </span><span><strong>Jack Suess</strong></span><span> in </span><a href="https://facultystaffawards.umbc.edu/awards2004/#suess" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>2004</span></a><span>. </span></p><p><span>“Over Joe’s career, he has made many significant contributions to UMBC and DoIT,” said Suess in his <a href="https://my.umbc.edu/groups/doit/posts/74342/attachments/27099" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">nomination letter</a> for Kirby. Among other things, Suess credited Kirby for leading DoIT’s efforts to prepare the campus for the potential ramifications of a Year 2000 (Y2K) “bug,” moving UMBC away from using Social Security Numbers (SSN) as a unique identifier in our IT systems, and <a href="https://er.educause.edu/articles/2013/8/beyond-the-it-help-desk" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">evangelizing the use of Request Tracker</a> (RT) as a way to improve campus (not just DoIT) support.  </span></p><p><span>“</span><span>Joe is a leader who works with many staff behind the scenes to help them use technology to provide better service and support to our UMBC community</span><span>,” says Suess. “</span><span>I'm thrilled the campus has recognized Joe's contributions to UMBC through this award!</span><span>”</span></p></span></div>

<Title>New REX reports for grade distribution</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>DoIT is now providing <a href="http://www.qsrinternational.com/nvivo/what-is-nvivo" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">NVivo</a>,</span><span> a qualitative research software package equivalent to SPSS, Stata, SAS, or R. This software is available to all faculty, staff, and graduate students. It allows the user to import, code, and arrange data for methodologically rigorous and scalable analyses. This acquisition aligns with efforts to support UMBC's strategic plan, including the objective to "vigorously promote a campus culture of multidisciplinary collaboration and multidisciplinary research, scholarship, and creative activity."<br><br>Professor Anne Brodsky of the Department of Psychology, who also serves as Interim Director, Maryland Institute for Policy Analysis and Research (MIPAR) and Special Assistant for Social Science Research with the CAHSS Dean's Office, has been conducting qualitative research since arriving at UMBC 20 years ago. <Title>Recent Network Issues in the Residence Halls and Apartments</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><em><span>We wanted to update the community on the recent Internet performance issues residential students were experiencing during the first week and a half of the spring semester.</span></em></div><div><em><span><br></span></em></div><div><em><span>A few days into the semester, we became aware of poor performance in the residence halls and apartments through our diagnostics and through feedback and tickets from students. Over the next week we worked closely with our vendor to triage and determine the exact cause of the issue.  </span></em></div><div><em><span><br></span></em></div><div><em><span>Late <span><span><span><span>Tuesday</span></span></span></span> evening, February 6th, we were able to pinpoint the issue and deploy a solution to the problem. Since that time we have been monitoring the system and working with students to ensure the system was functioning correctly. After several days of testing and validation we emailed all the students residing on campus to let them know we believe this issue has been resolved and to encourage them to report any ongoing problems through <a href="https://rt.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://rt.umbc.edu</a></span></em></div><div><em><span> </span></em></div><div><em><span>I would again like to thank everyone for their cooperation, feedback and the detailed information provided by students that helped us get to the bottom of this issue.     <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>To upgrade Blackboard’s core file system that cannot wait until Spring Break or Summer, Blackboard engineers will service UMBC’s cloud system on Saturday, January 27, from 12:01 a.m. to approximately 6 a.m. DoIT realizes this is the weekend before Spring 2018 classes start on Monday, January 29, but the necessary upgrade will migrate files and associated content to a more secure, encrypted system. As a result, we also expect to see increased performance and responsiveness of our Blackboard site. </span><span><strong>During this six-hour period, Blackboard will be offline. We simply could not find another downtime window of this length once the Spring semester starts.</strong></span></p><p><span>In preparation for this downtime:</span></p><ul><li><p><span><strong>Winter 2018 Instructors:</strong> We know grades are due Wed., 1/31.     <div class="html-content"><p>“<strong>SEEQ Instructor Profiles by Mean</strong>” or Median report, provides the SEEQ survey results by Class and Instructor for a given term. Data can be queried by Organization, Subject, Course, Section and Instructor. This REX report mirrors the data in the Blue Instructor Report, but data are presented in a more compact format that prints more efficiently.<span>  </span>PDFs of the Means reports are publicly available on the IRADS website at <a href="https://oir.umbc.edu/university-data/sceq-profiles/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://oir.umbc.edu/university-data/sceq-profiles/</a>.</p><p>The “<strong>SEEQ Instructor Data Over Time</strong>” report displays the results of the ‘Overall’ section of the SEEQ survey for an Instructor, which includes questions 30, 31 and 32.<span>  </span>Data can be queried by Begin Term and Instructor to Review.<span>  </span>Data are reported for each course section taught by the instructor from the Begin Term to the most recent term available and compare the instructor mean on the three items with the Org, UMBC and Course Level means.<span>  </span>This report may be useful for P&amp;T review. </p><p>All three reports can be accessed by going to <a href="http://rex.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">rex.umbc.edu</a>, clicking on <em>‘Guided Reports’</em>, and then navigating to the <em>Census Data &gt; Student Course Evaluations &gt; SEEQ</em> <span> </span>folder.</p></div>

<Title>Online Learning Consortium Offers Flexible Training</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>Through a University System of Maryland partnership, DoIT has offered online training to UMBC full-time and part-time faculty via the Online Learning Consortium (OLC) over several years. UMBC remains a member of the Online Learning Consortium, but the partnership providing access to a large number of workshop seats is ending. 
    
    </p><p>The OLC workshop format utilizes proven teaching strategies and learning activities while modeling best practices for online and hybrid learning. Participants engage with experienced instructors and collaborate with peers via synchronous (live) and asynchronous environments. Workshops are delivered online over 3-7 days. <span>Faculty can take workshops through the end of the year, but</span><strong> registration must be completed by February 23, 2018.</strong><span> We have 100 seats remaining.</span></p><p>The <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JMPIAXgGwKO1xfnWujdhm8TxF96OuTpUsG0XorKz85I/edit?usp=sharing" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">following list identifies workshops</a> and when they will be offered each semester. The workshop descriptions are linked in titles with the dates. If more than one date is available, it will be listed at the bottom of the description page.

    <p>Additionally, OLC offers three self-paced workshops with 365-days of access.
    </p><ul><li><a href="https://onlinelearningconsortium.org/learn/olc-new-institute-schedule/institute-offerings/?id=418" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Strategies for Increasing Interaction &amp; Engagement</a> </li><li><a href="https://onlinelearningconsortium.org/learn/olc-new-institute-schedule/institute-offerings/?id=396" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Giving Effective Feedback</a> </li><li><a href="https://onlinelearningconsortium.org/learn/olc-new-institute-schedule/institute-offerings/?id=409" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">ADA &amp; Web Accessibility</a> </li></ul><p>Finally, faculty who complete all four of OLC workshops on the topic of <strong>Accessibility and Universal Design for Learning</strong> in 2018 may receive a digital credential from OLC. The specific workshops are: </p><ul><li><span>Fundamentals: ADA &amp; Web Accessibility </span></li><li><span>Designing with Accessibility in Mind </span></li><li><span>Strategic Planning for Web Accessibility</span></li><li><span>Applying Universal Design for Learning (UDL) </span><span>Principles to Online Courses to Increase Accessibility and Engagement </span></li></ul><p>To register for a workshop, please <a href="http://doit.umbc.edu/request-tracker-rt/doit-myumbc-tsc/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">open an RT ticket</a>. Be sure to include the <a href="http://onlinelearningconsortium.org/learn/workshops/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">name of the workshop</a> you would like to attend and the date(s).
