Software Bug in ResNet Wireless System

In response to residential student feedback, we recently partnered with the Office of Residential Life and updated all residential buildings with wireless hardware upgrades that provide the fastest speeds available. However, with innovation and new hardware can come unexpected challenges. RT tickets from residential students helped us identify a system-wide issue that may impact your user experience.

DoIT has identified a software bug in the residential wireless system. The bug can cause devices to connect to access points further away a student’s room they necessary, resulting in slower, less consistent speeds and occasional disconnects from the wireless network. This problem is present on Eduroam and on Visitor and Campus wireless and it's an issue on the devices themselves, not just a single wireless network.

Please note that we do not believe this problem is present in the academic areas of the campus, only in the Residence Halls.

We have been working with the vendor, Cisco, to get a version of software that fixes the bug and they are currently vetting a patch through their testing lab. In the meantime, we have worked with Cisco to develop an interim solution to minimize the impact on you. This interim solution involves monitoring the system for certain error logs caused by this bug, and resetting the access points as needed. We apologize for the inconvenience and, as soon as the new software is available, we will be applying it throughout the Residence Halls immediately.

Thank you for your patience as we work through this challenge with our campus partners. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me for more information.

Sincerely,

Damian Doyle

Senior Director of Enterprise Infrastructure and Support

DoIT - UMBC

Equifax Data Breach

<Tagline>What People Should Know About the Equifax Breach.</Tagline>

As many have seen, Equifax had a breach of the personal information of approximately 143 million people. This is one of the largest breaches of personally identifiable information ever. Here are some things that people should do and know about the breach.

The breach involved a combination of social security numbers, names, birth dates, and addresses. Some drivers license numbers have also been breached. The credit card numbers of approximately 209,000 U.S. consumers and dispute documents for approximately 182,000 U.S. consumers were also accessed.

The main website for Equifax (equifax.com) has been incredibly slow since the breach. They are likely being flooded with people trying to get information about the breach.

Equifax has setup a standalone website for the breach. The web address for the standalone site is www.equifaxsecurity2017.com. It is much faster than going to equifax.com.

Some of Equifax's call center resources, to manage their data breach, were impacted by Hurricane Irma. Call center wait times may be longer while Equifax gets additional call center resources in place.

What should people do?

First, go to www.equifaxsecurity2017.com and see if your information was released. Also, don't assume if one person in your household / family was not breached that others in the same house weren't breached. Each person needs to be checked. As a personal example, my information was breached, but my wife's was not.

If your information was breached, you will have to opportunity to sign up for credit monitoring. Some reports are that you will be given a legal agreement to click through while signing up for the credit monitoring. You should read it carefully; and if you have concerns about the terms of the agreement, consult with an attorney.

Equifax has said that they will be sending letters in the mail to people who had their credit card numbers and dispute documents accessed. Equifax has not announced plans to send letters to the remaining millions of people. The only way they will know if they have been breached is through www.equifaxsecurity2017.com.

If you do receive a letter that your credit card number has been stolen, immediately contact your credit card company to report the stolen number. They will typically issue you a new card and number and cancel any fraudulent charges made on your account. Nothing else typically needs to be done for a stolen credit card number.

As a final step, make sure that you monitor your credit reports at least every 6-12 months going forward. Once your information is in criminal hands, they can use it at any time in the future to try to open financial accounts and make purchases in your name. Often the information isn't used for months or even years.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out to the DoIT Security Department by sending email to security@umbc.edu.

Mark Cather

UMBC Chief Security Officer

New Active Learning Classrooms in Sondheim

<Tagline>Sondheim 101 and 409: Flagship Active Learning Classrooms</Tagline>

The Division of Information Technology (DoIT) and Facilities
Management (FM) began working with the Classroom Committee in 2016 to study the
possibility of converting two large classrooms, Sondheim 101 and 409, from
standard classrooms of tablet arm chairs with a standard AV projector setup to “Active
Learning” spaces. A sub-committee of the
Classroom Committee, made up of faculty and administrators, was formed to
discuss how a classroom renovation might best support “Active Learning”. The recommendations of this sub-committee and
the Classroom Committee were used to guide the design of these rooms.

Sondheim 101 Before

Sondheim 409 Before

The final design of these rooms included two key components
as guiding principles: flexible furniture and collaborative technology. While the furniture and technology in each
rooms varies, this was intentional as to provide two “models” of active
learning environments for faculty and students to experience. The feedback from the faculty and students
who use these two rooms will be very valuable in guiding the final design of
the active learning classrooms in the new ILSB building.

The Office of the Provost, DoIT, and Facilities Management
partnered to fund this project with a total cost of $329,000.

Sondheim 101 has rolling chairs with rectangular tablets
that can be configured into groups of three, four or six, or arranged in
    circles or rows. The classroom
technology includes two 80” monitors and two 65” monitors, document camera, enhanced
classroom audio to support a collaborative setting, and wireless collaboration
which allows multiple students or student groups to simultaneously share their
content from their device(s) to the classroom displays. Finally, this room is outfitted with six 96”
    glass dry erase boards.

Sondheim 101 After

Sondheim 101 After

Sondheim 409 is more similar in furniture and
technology to the eight active-learning classrooms of the Interdisciplinary
Life Sciences Building (ILSB) that will be completed in 2019. Sondheim 409 will
have rolling chairs and trapezoidal tables that can form hexagons. The
classroom technology includes two 80” monitors and four 65” monitors, a
touch-enabled PC, document camera, enhanced classroom audio to support a
collaborative setting, and wireless collaboration which allows multiple students
or student groups to simultaneously share their content from their device(s) to
    the classroom displays. In addition,
each display will have a local HDMI connection for small group display of
content. Finally, this room is outfitted
with six 96” glass dry erase boards and a 144” glass dry erase board behind the
    instructor station.

Sondheim 409 After

Sondheim 409 After
