DoIT Upgrades New Media Studio to HD
More Modern Facilities Are "A Boon to Students"
Over the summer, DoIT replaced all of the New Media Studio’s analog, standard-definition TV production equipment to high definition (HD). This included three new Sony HD cameras and related components and switchers for video and audio production.
“The upgrade means we’ll be able to give UMBC students, faculty and staff the kinds of live production experiences they’d find in the Baltimore area,” says Jack Suess, Vice President of IT and Chief Information Officer (CIO). “In addition to improving our institutional capabilities, bringing the Studio up to modern production standards will help prepare students for the kind of work environments they’ll encounter.”
A good example of this kind of student talent development pipeline ocurred during the very successful first season of HD live streaming athetics events on ESPN3 last year. Working with ‘Eli Eisenberg (‘86) and his media production company, VPC, Inc, DoIT, Athletics and several Media and Commuication Studies (MCS) students produced more than 20 live men’s & women’s basketball games that drew rave reviews from ESPN and the America East Conference (AEC). Consisting of 15-20 member crews, the broadcasts were initially produced more by VPC professionals, but by the end of season, they were largely student produced. Several of these students and young alums were then hired by the Baltimore Ravens for the team’s own multimedia upgrade to facilities at M&T Bank Stadium and practice facilities in Owings Mills.
“The upgrade to HD is a boon to the students in Media and Communication Studies,” says MCS Chair Jason Loviglio. “Working with industry-quality gear and with talented professionals like Professor Bill Shewbridge represents a huge advantage when it comes to finding work in a variety of industries that now rely on in-house video production for websites, streaming, and other applications. Along with the ESPN-3 upgrade in sports broadcasting, UMBC now offers students incredible opportunities to do professional-quality video work.”
The New Media Studio is a fee-for-service production facility that has a long tradition of working with faculty in digital storytelling, research grant results dissemination, covering campus events, and producing recorded TV shows like “In The Loop.” We also work with courses focused on media production. Blackboard Instructor Mobile App Now Available
Connect with students on the go
A new Bb Instructor mobile app was released for iOS and Android devices last month, just before the annual Blackboard World conference.
Designed to simplify the teaching experience, the Bb Instructor mobile app is the first phase of several planned development for mobile support. Currently, the app allows faculty to:
- Create, review, and post announcements
- View, create, edit, and monitor discussion board threads and replies
- Preview courses to make sure course materials are mobile-friendly
- Connect with students using Bb Collaborate Ultra including real-time audio and video support, whiteboard and chat, and recording
Why are there two separate apps?
Blackboard developed
two separate apps to support different roles. The
student app focuses on content consumption, content creation (e.g., assignments) and updates via the activity stream while the
instructor app will be about content creation, engagement, and assessment. If you are teaching a course or supporting a course as a TA or course builder, then Bb Instructor is the right app to use.
What happened to Bb Mobile Learn?
This app was
discontinued by Blackboard earlier in 2017 as it would no longer function in the 64-bit environment of some mobile operating systems.
Why don't I see my exact course layout?
The mobile app is not designed to mimic your exact course. Rather,
the focus is on specific and essential items such as due dates, announcements, course content, and discussions. There is no control panel or course menu. If you require access to the desktop version of your course, please use a browser.
Why does my content look strange in the mobile app?
Why isn't Blackboard more mobile friendly without an app?
Bb does offer
a responsive theme, which UMBC will deploy in WT2018. This theme allows faculty and students to access Blackboard on mobile devices such as phones and tablets without using a specific app. The theme is also more accessible for screen readers and increased visual contrast.
Why should I use the app if the mobile theme is coming?
Why can't I view my grade center?
At this time, the Bb Instructor mobile app does not natively support the grade center. However, grading support will be developed in two phases. The first phase will allow faculty to add a point value for grades while the second phase will support rubrics. Additionally, once the mobile-friendly theme is deployed, faculty should be able to view the grade center on tablets.

myUMBC: Fall 2017 Updates
I hope everyone had a great summer. We've made a few changes for this fall, hopefully nothing that trips anyone up.
Cleaned Up Start Page
We made an attempt at making the start page a little less busy. Hopefully it is easier on the eyes. Not a major change but we hope you enjoy it.
We're in the process of reaching out to folks to discuss major changes to how the Start page works. If you have ideas and want to discuss, please let me know.
Featured and Weekend Events
Now on the
Events page there are tabs to view upcoming Featured events as well as events happening during the upcoming weekend. Now if someone says "I wonder what's going on this weekend," you'll know.
Guide is the New Topics
Topics was never a great name for the menu, but we couldn't think of anything better at the time. Changing it to Guide aligns with how we will be revisiting the section in future updates to myUMBC.
Faculty and Staff Center Tweaks
We changed the layout of the Faculty and Staff Center to make them in line with the other topic pages. Hopefully the change isn't too dramatic.
Profile: Classes (Beta)
We added a Classes section to the
Profile of students. Please take a look and let us know what you think.

Summer 2017 Classroom Technology Upgrades
11 Rooms in three months!
During the summer of 2017, DoIT AV Services upgraded eleven classrooms and meeting rooms across campus. Funding for these room renovations was provided by CNMS, The Commons, and DoIT. The full list of the rooms upgraded is below.
Some of the highlights of these upgrades are as follows:
- 80" monitors on stands with Mersive Solstice wireless collaboration devices in two Commons meeting rooms
- Improved audio, projection, and sight-lines in two Public Policy and two Sondheim classrooms
- Improved audio and projection in three Sherman Hall a one Meyerhoff room
In addition to these highlights, the CASTLE was completely renovated from a AV technology standpoint. The "new" CASTLE features eight larger displays, improved room audio, wireless collaboration, and new instructor controls that allow the instructor to display content or multiple sources of content on one or many displays all through the use of a touch-panel screen.
All of this work (design, installation, configuration, and training) was done in-house by AV Services. Special kudos to Danielle Brown and Jack Malone.

We had an issue yesterday (July 31) in which myUMBC sent duplicate copies of posts to approximately 11,000 students. Some students received up to 10 copies of the same post via myUMBC, email, and push notifications.
We have corrected the problem and after extensive testing we are confident that this will not happen again.
I sincerely apologize for the error. I know you are putting your faith in us to provide solutions and when things like this happen, our credibility takes a hit. I appreciate your understanding as we grow the use of this feature. If you have any questions, please let me know.
