Sondheim Rooms 101 & 409 to be Renovated Over Summer 2017
Partnership between DoIT, Provost, & Facilities Management
Beginning at the end of May 2017, Sondheim rooms 101 & 409 will undergo major renovations and be converted
into active learning classrooms modeled after the upcoming Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building (ILSB). Renovations are expected to be completed before the start of Fall 2017 with DoIT, the Office of the Provost, and Facilities Management all collaborating on the project.

The new active learning spaces will feature movable furniture and multiple flat panel displays throughout the room. Enhanced audio will allow faculty and students to have their voice projected thanks to a microphone and a speaker system throughout the room. A new wireless collaboration tool will allow students to share content from their personal devices on the room’s main display.
Antonio Moreira, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, said, “We want to make sure these facilities are suitable for faculty and students to have the learning environment they need, to really obtain the best education possible.”
“It is important that all three offices are engaged in these projects.”
The rooms will also receive major touch ups to their overall design including new windows, improved lighting, and upgraded finishes on floors, walls, and ceilings. In addition, new door lock sets, access control devices, and door operators will help improve accessibility for the rooms.
“This is the continuation of many collaborations for the ongoing improvements to classroom spaces. The Provost's Office, Facilities Management, and DoIT have collaborated on many projects identified by the classroom committee for many years in numerous buildings,” said Joe Rexing, Director Design and Construction Services for Facilities Management. “It is important that all three offices are engaged in these projects for the improvements.”

DoIT, the Office of the Provost, and Facilities Management will use the feedback on these rooms from faculty and students to modify designs for rooms in the upcoming ILSB. “We must develop more and more of these types of facilities, where the students are excited to come to their class and the faculty have new ways of improving teaching and learning, and they need classrooms that provide that,” said Moreira.
On the left, Sondheim room 101 and on the right, Sondheim 409. Both rooms will go under renovations starting Summer 2017 and are expected to be completed before the start of Fall 2017.

System Patching on 6/2/2017 starting at 5pm
As part of our ongoing commitment to security, the Unix Infrastructure group will be conducting its quarterly system patching on Friday, June 2nd from 5pm to 10pm. While many systems will be patched without any service disruption, there are several systems which require the downtime of key services for short times during this window. The schedule below outlines which key services will be offline and for how long.
- The new web hosting environment (virthost and jabba) will be partially unavailable (pages will be available but any database calls will not work)
- Access to Cyrus and UMBC Webmail (accounts not migrated to UMBC Gmail)
- All mail will be queued up and delivered after the server is patched
- Expected to be unreachable from 5pm to 8pm
- All HFS (user) servers will be offline
- License5 will be down (autodesk, cadence, idl, schrodinger, xilinx, mathematica)
- Perseus will be unavailable
- myUMBC lite page will be up resulting in reduced myUMBC functionality
- Expected to be down from 5pm to 7pm only
- Wiki will be unavailable
- The sites (wordpress) web hosting environment will be unreachable
- Expected to be down from 5pm to 7pm only
- Userpages will be unavailable

WannaCry Ransomware
As has been reported in the news in recent days, a piece of ransomware, based on a vulnerability called WannaCry, has been impacting many computer systems around the globe. We have been monitoring our protective tools for signs of the ransomware, and thankfully have seen no impact from this particular ransomware on campus. At UMBC, this particular type of ransomware has been effectively blocked by Windows updates that we applied, network filtering, antivirus program rules for the malware, and network antivirus rules.
As a reminder, ransomware is a type of malicious program that encrypts the files on a computer and will only decrypt them if the owner of the machine pays a ransom to the hacker. Very often the ransom amounts vary from $200 up to $10,000 or more. The ransom amounts often need to be paid in bitcoin, adding a level of complication to cleaning up any infected machines.

Here are some best practices related to ransomware.
- Be careful what you click on and what websites you visit. The sketchier the website, the more likely you are to be infected with malware.
- Make sure that you keep your system up-to-date by applying software updates as they become available. For machines managed by DoIT through Active Directory, DoIT takes care of the software updates.
- Make sure you keep a backup of critical files that you can't afford to lose. Files can be backed up to the UMBC Box.com solution for all data that is not related to HIPAA or other federal and state regulations.
- Make sure your system is running an up-to-date antivirus program. For machines managed by DoIT through Active Directory, we take care of configuring antivirus software on the system. For machines not managed by DoIT, the person managing/owning the machine is responsible for configuring the antivirus software.
If you keep your system up-to-date and have antivirus software running on your computers, many forms of malicious program, including ransomware and WannaCry, will be blocked from infecting and/or running on your computer. Also, by keeping backups of your files, your files will be safe from threats like ransomware. This report is intended to provide a visual display of the demographics and academic data related to the populations you manage in a given term, and allow comparison to the UMBC population. There are 3 different displays of the data on separate pages, accessible via the boxes at the top of the report.
- Summary - The first page is a graphic summary of the most requested data related to various populations
- Comparison - The second page is a comparison of the percentage of each value for the selected population vs the percentage for UMBC as a whole.
- Counts - The third page shows the numbers and percentages for each value for various data
