New Instructional Technology Staff Start New Semester
If you’re seeing some new faces in DoIT, chances are they work in instructional technology. In March, DoIT announced Sherri Braxton-Lieber as our new Director of Instructional Technology. In July, she announced two new specialists, Holly Bielak and Mariann Hawken. They joined Tom Penniston, who worked with us part-time last year, and is now working full-time as a specialist, too. Finally, we have recently added Brad Boyle to support the International Media Center (IMC) and Scantron test scoring.
While everyone is well-versed in Blackboard, there’s a nice mix of expertise across all of the instructional technologies DoIT supports, including clickers, hybrid/blended course redesign, learning analytics and screencasting. Also, you’ll likely notice more workshops and brown bags as the new team is even holding a special drawing for people who frequent DoIT events. IT Focus Will be IMC and Scantron Test Scoring
DoIT is pleased to announce that Brad Boyle has joined the Instructional Technology team to support the International Media Center (IMC) and Scantron test scoring. A recent graduate of Franklin and Marshall College, Brad was a German major and international studies minor who has studied and traveled extensively. He is fluent in German and basic Arabic, and has worked in a variety of non-profit, relief projects in Haiti, the Bahamas, New Orleans and West Virginia. Bb Courses Prior to 2009 to be Deleted August 23-24
Courses older than Winter 2009 will be deleted from Blackboard during the weekend of August 23-24, 2014. This includes:- Winter 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008
- Spring 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008
- Summer 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008
- Fall 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008
UMBC has been using Blackboard since 2000, but
since 2009, DoIT has annually deleted Bb courses six (6) years or older. Our goal is to maintain no more than six (6) years of Bb courses on the active production server available via myUMBC or directly at
blackboard.umbc.edu. This best practice will keep the system healthy and ensure the Blackboard application can access course data within the allowed "backwards compatibility" timeframe supported by the vendor.
Good news is they are also going to add additional CPU's during this downtime to maintain our system performance.
As a FYI there has been an average of 700+ tickets each day this week and other than the brief interruption on Monday the performance has been within normal expectations.

Feeder Schools reports available in REX
REX has 5 new reports related to the performance of undergraduate students from selected feeder schools. A feeder school is the last school (high school or institution) attended priorto matriculation to UMBC. The reports allow for the selection of high schools, 2 year or 4 year institutions. If high school is selected, then the reports will only show those students admitted as new freshmen. The 2 and 4 year institutions will show only those admitted as new transfers. It will not include students from a high school if they were admitted as a transfer.
REX navigation to the reports are Home > Census Data > Feeder Schools
Feeder School Comparison - Used for the comparison of schools within an area, such as Maryland, non-Maryland states or international. The data being compared includes application, enrollment, retention, and degree data. This report is linked to the other 4 reports to allow for drilling to trends and other data.
Feeder School - Summary Trends - The same data shown on Feeder School Comparison, but broken down by term. This is linked to the Feeder School Comparison by clicking on the name of the school or location. The following three reports break down the data into 5 year trends and are available from the Comparison report via the underlined >> in each section of data.

FA2014 Bb Course Shells Created 7/12/14
Bb course shells for FA2014 were created on July 12, 2014 on the Bb production server at http://blackboard.umbc.edu. Enrollments for FA2014 courses will continue to be updated daily. Bb shells are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, field or discussion) listed in the UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC), provided that there is an instructor of record listed. The addition of new course sections and/or instructors will result in new Bb shells being automatically generated each morning. Student enrollment in Bb will continue to mirror the official registration in SA, and will update hourly.
If you are an instructor, and your name is not associated with the course you are teaching in the SOC, please see your departmental scheduling coordinator to get that issue resolved. Once you are listed in the SOC, your Bb course shell will be created automatically.
Note:
- By default, if an instructor is teaching multiple sections of the same course, all sections are combined into one Bb course shell. If you prefer separate shells, please submit an RT ticket to split sections.
- If you need a shell for a research or independent study course, please submit a new course request.
As a reminder, all Bb course shells are initially unavailable to students until the instructor makes it available. For help, visit www.umbc.edu/blackboard/help.
