Urgent Service Outage, Friday, October 29, 2010

An urgent service outage is needed today to address performance issues with several campus systems such as Active Directory (AD), Blackboard and Financial Systems. Specifically, these services operate on what is known as “virtual” servers or dedicated “zones” on a small number of physical servers.

Over the past four weeks the primary storage arrays for our virtual servers have been experiencing performance issues resulting in occasional failures of various systems. Many of these outages have
occurred during the weekend hours when they were less noticeable. Our storage vendor has recommended upgrading these systems immediately to resolve these issues.

The services listed below will be offline Friday, October 29, 2010 between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. while an updated storage firmware patch is applied.

    AD services

    Network Drives

    Network Printing

    General

    Blackboard

    Terminal Server

Lenel Door access servers. Doors will continue to work but changes can't be made during this time

Storage Failure Affects Blackboard

Today from approximately noon to 2pm the Blackboard server was unavailable. This was due a controller on a storage array going bad. Unfortunately, the server attached to this storage was Blackboard. We have had some issues with this storage array for the past few weeks. The vendor (Sun) has been actively working with us to analyze logs to identify the root cause of our problems. On Saturday we implemented a temporary fix that appears to have fixed one issue. However, today we had an unrelated hardware failure. We are awaiting word back from Sun but we expect to have them install a new controller sometime this evening. Thank you for your patience.

Reminder: 24/7 Bb Support Now For Students Only

UPDATED Dec. 3, 2010:

DoIT encourages faculty to continue to steer their students to the 24/7 Bb Support Portal as a "first line of defense" for assistance with any technical Blackboard questions. Typically the questions that students have about Blackboard are less complex than those faculty have, and the 24/7 Bb Support team has been successful in resolving those issues quickly. Based on a survey conducted this summer, 77% of respondents reported that they were satisfied, or highly satisfied with their 24/7 Bb Support experience, and 85 % would recommend it to others. Reminding students of this service should help reduce the default technical support role that many faculty end up playing now.
    --------------------

In late August, DoIT announced a change in the way faculty receive Blackboard support. This change was made due to faculty feedback regarding the quality and consistency of support received through the 24/7 Bb Support provided by Presidium. As of October 1, faculty seeking Bb support should contact the UMBC Help Desk at 455-3838, where they will be routed to UMBC support staff. After hours, faculty are asked to submit an online request for help through the RT System at http://rt.umbc.edu. 24/7 Support from Presidium will still be available to students only, and DoIT encourages faculty to convey this to their classes.

Thank you for your patience during this transition. We hope that this change will provide the best support possible for both faculty and students.

    Update at 7:30AM
UMBC’s Blackboard system is currently down. At approximately 12:30 am this morning we experienced a failure of our Blackboard server virtualization system (VMware). DoIT staff have worked with the vendor throughout the night to isolate the problem. As of 7:15 am the vendor has proposed a solution which should restore the Blackboard system in the next 2-3 hours (e.g. approximately 10:15AM). We apologize for the inconvenience and will update you as we know more.

    Update at 5:03AM
The Blackboard system went offline early on Monday morning. DoIT staff have isolated the issue to the server virtualization system (VMware) used to host the Blackboard system. We are currently working with the vendor to restore services. We will post additional information later today.

DoIT has worked with Blackboard over the past week to determine the cause of this error. Earlier this week DoIT was provided a resolution which has been installed and tested on the Bb test server. Unfortunately this resolution will cause the following known issue to occur: any attached file with either a semicolon (;) or a pound sign (#) in the filename will result in an error when a user tries to access the file. The workaround for this issue is to avoid using those characters when naming files.

We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience that this down time may cause.
