New Door Access System

Many people don't know that there is an entire infrastructure of hardware and software behind all the electronic locks that are in use across campus. Whenever someone swipes their UMBC ID in a door reader, that reader sends a signal back to a server to check whether the door should unlock or not. The system that we are currently using is based on software and hardware by a company called Lenel.

Earlier this year, we undertook a project to upgrade the infrastructure to the latest hardware and software. This included both the Office of Residential Life (ORL) and the main campus systems. ORL uses a dedicated version of the Lenel system to manage their myriad of doors.

The upgrades were necessary to support the latest features and continue to receive support from our vendors. The servers that ran the software were also beginning to fail and needed to be replaced. By the end of the summer, the entire card access infrastructure will be upgraded to fully redundant virtual servers with all the latest software and features.

New Scantron Forms For Fall

Starting this Fall, the Department of Information Technology will begin using new, green Scantron test scoring sheets that have been customized for UMBC. These forms utilize Campus IDs for identification purposes, which are more specific to the student than names alone, and faster to complete at test time. This change will also make for easier and more accurate uploading of grades to Blackboard.

For those who have supplies of the previous blue form, unopened packs may be exchanged at the Bookstore for packs of the new green form at no cost. There will be no change in price for future purchases of the new green forms.

Of course, this will necessitate that those taking tests know their Campus IDs, and we expect that there may be some confusion on the part of some students in regard to their Campus ID. Information on Campus IDs can be found at: http://www.umbc.edu/oit/newIDs.html

Students may find their Campus ID on the profile section of myUMBC. After successfully logging in, their name is displayed in the top, right-hand corner of the myUMBC window. Mousing over the name reveals a link to the 'Profile' page where the students’ Campus ID is displayed.

    FAQs
What if the student does not have their campus ID at test time?
The student should leave the “Campus ID” fields blank but should complete the “First” and “Last” name fields. The sheet can still be scored but it may introduce delays in processing.

Who do I contact at the bookstore to exchange my unopened packages of blue forms?
    Nicole Jackson, X52695

Can I use the old blue forms until my department runs out?
No. The scanner hardware and software have been specifically configured and calibrated to use UMBC’s new custom form. All old unopened packages can be traded in at the UMBC bookstore.

Changes to myUMBC for August 2, 2010

<Tagline>Group Subscriptions, Tweaks, and Bug Fixes</Tagline>

We just posted an update with the following changes:

Group Subscriptions - Groups can now subscribe to other groups. When you subscribe, your group will pull in the public content from the group you're subscribe too. This provides a great way for groups to share content with one another without having to post content in two different groups. Spotlights, News, Events, Discussions and Media are supported, but the content must be marked "public" to be seen in another group.

Groups Page - The Groups page now looks a little better with more emphasis on publicly visible groups.

Dashboard Tweak - To address some confusion we changed the name of "Groups" to "Activity" and gave it a cool lightning bolt arrow icon. This was done to better reflect what this dashboard will show you... recent activity. Our plan is for this dashboard to show you new content in your groups, and comments/paws on your public content.

Events Tweaks

Events now default to an hour long if you change the time, instead of just 5 minutes.

You can now add up to 99999 seats for an event instead of 99.

Bug Fixes

You can no longer post empty comments... whew

Group Pages should no longer throw errors

Fixed a bug that send you to calendar view when browsing group events.

Miscellaneous typos and fixes

Later this week...

Media is shaping up nicely and should be available before the end of the week. We think you're gonna like it.

We'll add the ability for groups to subscribe to external content like RSS, YouTube, Vimeo, and Flickr feeds

New Version of MyUMBC to be Launched August 14th at 10:00AM

It is hard to believe but the current version of myUMBC is going on 4 years. We launched in summer of 2006 and made significant enhancements in 2008, adding multiple spotlights, and events. In 2009, with the launch of Student Administration we made minor changes to the user interface but began discussions with campus stakeholders regarding their needs. The needs identified were improving the integration of events and calendar, enhancing discussions, and providing tools for student groups, committees, and small departments to use myUMBC to collaborate.

Based on that feedback, we have completely rewritten myUMBC. The original version was in written in a language called PHP. The new version is written using the Ruby-on-Rails framework. Ruby is used for applications ranging from twitter to yellow-pages and is prized for its flexibility. The goal of making this change was to 1) Improve DoIT’s abililty to respond to new requests, and 2) Provide more flexibility in supporting a variety of web interfaces, including mobile devices.

On August 14th starting at 10:00AM, you will see a redesigned version of myUMBC. Please bare with us while the change is made, there may be periods during the weekend where system adjustments are made.

The most noticeable change is that the dashboard has moved from the left-hand side to the top of the page. This was done so we could improve the layout of secondary pages. The major enhancements are the introduction of what we call group pages. These pages allow a group, committee, or department to create a web site where you can control content based on whether you are a member or not. Groups can be found through the community pull-down that is adjacent to the Topics pull-down. By going to the pull down you can find information on groups you can participate in or that you have joined. We have added features for group discussions, calendar, spotlights, media links, and basic web pages -- all of which can be controlled via a simple web interface.

Sample Screen Shot of New Dashboard

A second enhancement is the way we have revamped the topic pages. Topic pages are now dynamically generated and will be much more consistent across the various topic pages. This allows DoIT to quickly modify a topic page and should improve the usability and consistency of myUMBC.

A third enhancement is we have revamped the way that calendars and events work. We redesigned the interface and made it much easier to add events. Calendars now provide filters and an iCal interface so you can subscribe specific events to a google calendar or mobile device and always be kept up to date.

All these changes are designed to make myUMBC more usable and more integral to the day-to-day needs of the UMBC community. We want and need your feedback but we ask that you give these changes a chance. Our user-testing has shown that once people get acclimated to the new interface they find this more intuitive than prior myUMBC versions. That said, we need your feedback.

Please Visit the MyUMBC BETA Site at: http://myumbc3.my.umbc.edu/ This site is a work in progress but should provide you with a sense of the changes being made.

myUMBC Groups-a-Go-Go

<Tagline>Almost on Schedule.... Like Any Good IT Project. :)</Tagline>

If you're reading this, the group works!

Thanks for taking a second to check out the myUMBC Fan Club group. We're going to use this group as our way to stay connected to you UMBC community.

So What's Going On With myUMBC?

I'm glad you asked. A lot.

First off, let me apologize for any inconvenience over the past few weeks as we had to turn some features of myUMBC off in order to upgrade them for the Fall. The new myUMBC is about a bazillion times more complicated than the old one and we're trying to ensure that when students flood back in late August that everything is going to work smoothly. We're still expecting a few hiccups, but we're working hard to minimize them.

We have an official launch window: Aug 14th - 15th. Its called a window because we're going to try and do it on the 14th, but if things go wrong (and they will), it may take until the 15th to get things back up and running.

There is still a ton of things left to do, though. Until the start of the semester, every day or two we will try and push out new features, content and bug fixes. If you run into any problems with the new myUMBC, let me know as soon as you can. We'll try and get the bugs squashed ASAP.

What's This Groups Thing?

Groups are the biggest and most ambitious new feature of myUMBC. They will hopefully provide a simple and easy way for the UMBC to connect and collaborate. Groups can be used for student org advertising and planning, simple websites for organizations, or collaboration areas for committees. We've purposefully made the tools in Groups simple and straightforward, because we don't need to be the best (there are plenty of tools online that are better at any given task), we just need to help the parts of the community that need help. As the community uses Groups, we'll be paying attention and adding and modifying features in order to best meet UMBC's needs.

As I've mentioned, each group consists of a set of "tools" you can use:

Home - a simple page showcasing the latest content from your group

Spotlights - spotlights, but just for your group

    News - a blog

    Events - a calendar

    Pages - a wiki

We've recently pushed out the two biggest (and most critical) tools of groups: Members and Discussions.

Members lets you manage the members of your group... that's all, but its kinda important.

Discussions lets you have discussions with your members. Its like a forum, but with some added myUMBC mojo. You can create three types of discussions:

General - talk about stuff in a free form discussion

Question - ask a question, then select one of the replies as an answer

Poll - ask a question and let people to vote on their preference

Going Public

An important function of groups is the ability to make your content "public". Any spotlight, news, event, discussion, media can be marked as public and will appear under their respective section of the Community menu. This makes it easy for your group to advertise their content to the entire UMBC community. Once content is made public, it can be pawed and commented on by anyone logged in to myUMBC.

So, if your group is planning an event, post it to your group calendar with tentative dates while you work out the details and when things are finalized, make it public, and then send your group members out to paw the event so it appears on the myUMBC Start page.

Coming Soon

We're now working on the last remaining parts of groups:

Media - Share the videos and photos you've posted on various sharing sites like YouTube, Vimeo and Flickr.

Categories - Allow you to categorize content within your group. Think of them as Topics, but just for your group.

Subscriptions - Automatically pull in content from external sites, like Blogger or Tumblr via RSS. You can also pull in content from other groups, which provides a great way for groups to work together to cross-advertise news and events. You can even subscribe to YouTube, Vimeo, and Flickr feeds and the images/videos appear in Media.

Thanks for everyone's understanding and support,

Collier

PS - The image is by one of my favorite artists, David Lanham. I think it accurately represents what the past two years have felt like as we've worked on myUMBC.

DoIT Linux GL servers and Linux Lab Image for Fall 2010

The DoIT Linux lab workstations and GL Linux login servers will continue to run Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3 for the Fall 2010 Semester.

Release notes, additional information and updates can be found at this URL:
    https://spaces.umbc.edu/display/CIG/OIT+Linux+Environment+Release+Notes

We plan to update the image on the GL Linux login servers as follows:

    - Upgrade one out of the three boxes during Week of Aug 16th.

    - Upgrade an additional box at beginning of Week of Aug 23rd

    - Upgrade the final box towards the end of the Week of Aug 23rd

While individual servers are down, going to linux.gl will get you onto one of the remaining servers up and functioning. We ask that you please continue to connect to linux.gl instead of individual system names to ensure you get to the right systems.

As always, if you have any issues with the servers or our lab systems, please start a ticket with our Help Desk. Please include the system you are on and as much detail as you can about the problem. It will then get moved to the group that can best handle it for you.

Full Title: Take a Two-Week, Online Course in "How to Teach an Online Course"Since most faculty teach the way they were taught--and most weren't taught online--the best way to start is to first learn online, when someone else is driving the experience. In 2008 UMBC joined the Sloan Consortium, an institutional organization dedicated to promoting quality online education. As members UMBC faculty have access to Sloan-C's "College Pass" program, which allows them to register for online courses on topics ranging from delivering online content and fostering student engagement to podcasting and use of Second Life. Of particular interest is the two-week "Getting Started: First Step Toward Online Teaching" course that begins July 14 and is repeated on August 25, October 13 and November 3. During this course, faculty will be introduced to the fundamentals of online education, and gain practical “hands-on” experience with technology. This is an ideal opportunity for faculty interested in exploring hybrid or online teaching.
