<Title>GO Chat Recap: Engaging New Students Online</Title>

    <div class="html-content">For our <a href="https://umbc.hosted.panopto.com/Panopto/Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=3a5de979-4f59-4b2f-a0e7-acdb014c91b7" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">February GO Chat</a>, we reflected on the transition from face-to-face programs for UMBC first-year students to a new online delivery required by COVID-19. Summer and Winter Bridge Programs, first-year experience courses, and transfer courses all underwent major transitions to welcome the newest Retrievers in a virtual environment.<div>  <p>We started with a brief discussion about several recent articles from <a href="https://er.educause.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">EDUCAUSE Review</a> that caught our attention: <br></p><ul><li><a href="https://er.educause.edu/blogs/2021/2/the-handoff-transitioning-from-synchronous-to-asynchronous-teaching" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>The Handoff: Transitioning from synchronous to asynchronous teaching</span></a><span> tackled the topic of balancing live synchronous instruction with asynchronous delivery. The authors note it starts with faculty communicating to students their purpose for each and what is to be accomplished. Bottom line: know your students, know your technology because a variety of tools can support diverse learning styles.</span></li><li><a href="https://er.educause.edu/blogs/2020/11/play-in-the-time-of-covid-19" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Play in the time of COVID-19.</span></a><span> Faculty are encouraged to challenge existing ideas about play that can dictate it is necessary to be serious all the time. Don’t forget the benefits of play in the learning environment! Your course design is one way to remove barriers to learning, create safety and community, and support motivation and student investment. A more “playful” course could include ice-breakers throughout the class or activities that engage learning in thematic ways. </span></li><li><a href="https://er.educause.edu/blogs/2021/2/teacher-are-you-there-being-present-in-online-learning" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Teacher, are you there? Being 'present' in online learning.</span></a><span> In this COVID, remote learning time, building and maintaining learner engagement is deemed even more critical. The authors remind us of simple steps to connect and engage, encouraging faculty to show their authentic selves. This might be your home office settings, some drop-in visits from your pets, or festive background wallpaper. Remember that synchronous and asynchronous video captures body language, facial expressions, and emotion. </span></li></ul><div><p><span>At UMBC, 2020 was a time of shifting on-campus programs and courses for new students to the virtual environment. Helping us understand what this meant for students,  instructors, and staff was Dr. Laila Shishineh, Director of First-Year &amp; Transfer Academic Programs in the Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs (UAA). </span></p><p><span>In this role, she oversees several campus initiatives: Academic Transition Courses (FYS, IHU, and TRS), Summer &amp; Winter Bridge Programs, and the Living-Learning Communities. These two categories, courses and programs, support all new students with a strong academic core and engagement opportunities. </span></p><p><span>Academic transition courses and programs are not required, yet high numbers of new students who complete these experiences share feedback that indicates value in helping students understand the academic climate, connect with other new students, and have a successful first or second semester. </span></p><p><span>The new student population at UMBC is split almost evenly between transfer students and freshmen, which drives the need to deliver courses and programs that help all new students connect with resources and staff. “When this shift happened last spring, we started like so many on campus,”Laila said. “Our core focus was how do we continue to engage new students, create a sense of connection, and make it fun and interesting.”</span></p><p><span>In a typical year, more than 500 students will take a transition course, between 300 and 400 students will participate in a Living-Learning Community, and another 60-70 will complete the Summer Bridge program. However, in the remote setting that COVID-19 required, Summer Bridge was the first program that transitioned to fully online and the number of students in the virtual environment doubled.</span></p><p><span>“We assess our programs and courses a lot,” Laila said. “For Summer Bridge, students enjoyed the opportunity that might not have been available otherwise.” For the transition courses offered fully online in fall 2020, students felt connected to the instructor, other students, and resources, but also expressed a desire to do more on campus. “Students got what they wanted,” she said, “but they were also looking for a little more on campus and we were limited in what we could offer.”</span></p><p><span><span>Looking ahead, there are valuable lessons learned from offering an almost completely online semester. “The LLCs might be the one place where we can go back to what we were doing,” Laila said, “and that’s the nature of LLC. But for our transition courses and programs, this opens a huge door for us. <Title>Essential Update to Respondus Lockdown Browser Available</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>A new update to Respondus Lockdown Browser (RLDB) is available for students to download and install. Outdated versions of Respondus Lockdown Browser may not allow students to save short answer and essay questions while taking a Blackboard test due to an update in the underlying Chromium browser that powers the RLDB tool.</span></p><p><span>Students must make sure they are <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/hobLBg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">using the latest version of RLDB </a><em>before</em> taking a Blackboard test if the secure browser is required.</span></p><ul><li><span>For Windows users, start RLDB, select the “i” button from the toolbar. The version will be displayed and you can also click on “Check for Newer Version”. If a newer version is available, you'll have the option to download and install it.  </span><strong>The latest Windows version is 2.0.7.01</strong>.</li><li><span>For Mac users, start RLDB and then select “About” from the toolbar. The version will be displayed as shown above, and you can click “Check for Update" to see if a newer version is available. <strong>The latest Mac version is 2.0.7.01</strong>.</span></li></ul><p><span>Existing installs of Respondus LockDown Browser will NOT be auto-updated at this time. Students must run the "Check for newer version" tool to download and install the update. <Title>Using Analytics to Improve Student Success</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Mathematics is a powerful tool.  We use applications from math all day, every day, like when we drive over a bridge or look at our email.  </span></p><p><span>Math is very difficult for many people, and they struggle with it.  Many students at our university (and almost all others) need to repeat a math class to progress in their program and complete their degrees.</span></p><p><span>Our research has uncovered some important facts:</span></p><ul><li><p><span>Many students repeating math classes often must do so more than one time, which extends their time to degree and could prevent them from graduating.  </span></p></li><li><p><span>Students who use the Math and Science Tutoring Center improve their chances of passing their math courses.</span></p></li><li><p><span>The positive effect from math tutoring is especially large for students who are repeating a course.  “Repeaters” increase their chances of success by roughly 15 to 20 percentage points!</span></p></li><li><p><span>But, we found, only about 10 percent of students repeating math were going to tutoring</span></p></li></ul><p><span>The Data Science Team, supported by DoIT and the Provost's Office, designed a pilot program in conjunction with the Math Department to “nudge” students repeating 100-level math courses to use tutoring.  </span></p><p><span>A nudge is a message designed to provide information to many people at very low cost that changes behavior over time.  An example of a nudge you see in everyday life is the roadside sign that says “Click it or ticket.”  Our nudges let students know not just that tutoring is effective, but also </span><span>how</span><span> effective it is.</span></p><p><span>This semester (Spring 2021) we sent nudges to 114 students using a myUMBC personal post.  About 70 percent of students receiving the nudge read them, and we have evidence that suggests that the nudge leads to an increased use of math tutoring by roughly 30 percent.  </span></p><p><span>The pilot is now in its 8th semester.  During that time we’ve nudged over 1800 students repeating their courses.  </span></p><p><span>In addition to this program, we’re using what we’ve learned about nudges to help students in other ways that support their success, including combining them with predictive analytics for enhanced early alerts.</span></p><br><p><span><em>By Bob Carpenter</em></span></p><div><span><br></span></div></span></div>

<Title>Why are Cyber Criminals Targeting Universities?</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>Phishing emails, spoofing and forgery schemes have found a hunting ground for cyber attacks within institutes of higher education just like UMBC. Below are some reasons why universities are appealing targets. If you would like more information please see the original article linked below.</span></p><br><p><span>Why Target Universities?</span></p><br><ul><li><p><span>Access to personal data.</span><span> To a cyber criminal universities are goldmines of information. Universities’ databases contain personal details of thousands of students and staff including names, address, phone numbers, data of birth, social security numbers, driver’s licence numbers, financial information and medical records.</span></p></li></ul><br><ul><li><p><span>Access to research</span><span>. Many universities have cutting-edge research and development departments that may even be funded by the US government. This research information may be valuable to foreign nations meaning that many hackers want to get their hands on the research.</span><span><br><br></span></p></li><li><p><span>Lack of security</span><span>. Universities allowing students and faculty to bring their own devices onto campus makes it much more difficult to track down and contain any malicious softwares that may enter the network.</span><span><br><br></span></p></li><li><p><span>Budget constraints</span><span>. Universities have a goal of attracting new students and one way this can be done is by controlling tuition cost. Cybersecurity is a lower priority as most potential students are not likely to decide on a university based on the schools security and privacy practices.</span><span><br><br></span></p></li><li><p><span>Transient nature of universities</span><span>. Every university has a constant changing population. With each new batch of students or faculty there would be those who are unfamiliar with security policies and procedures.</span></p></li></ul><br><p><span>Examples</span></p><br><p><span>One of the phishing schemes involves scammers attempting to gain access to students’ federal student aid (FSA). The attack begins with a phishing email. For example, the message may notify the recipient of a fake university bill that can be paid through the portal. </span></p><br><p><span>These attacks will usually threaten late fees to increase the urgency. Once the attacker has access to the student’s portal, they’ll change the student’s direct deposition destination so that the money is sent directly to the attacker.</span></p><br><p><span>Another phishing tactic is the fake job offer. Scammers will recruit students for a fake job. Students who respond to the phishing scams are sent a counterfeit check with instructions to deposit it and to send back a portion to the scammer immediately by writing a check on their own funds. </span></p><br><p><span>After the money is sent back to the scammer, the bank will notify the student that the original check is a fraud and that the student has lost the money they sent.  The is no way to recover these funds.</span></p><br><p><span>How to Stay Protected</span></p><br><ul><li><p><span>Using 2 factor authentication to add another layer of security. UMBC offers 2-step authentication through DUO. For more information on DUO please see </span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/display/faq/Two-Factor+Authentication+with+DUO" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>https://wiki.umbc.edu/display/faq/Two-Factor+Authentication+with+DUO</span></a><span>.  </span></p></li></ul><ul><li><p><span>Navigating directly to the source rather than clicking a link or opening an attachment within an email or text.</span></p></li><li><p><span>Looking for typos and errors. </span></p></li><li><p><span>Making note if the email is giving a sense of urgency.  Any wording that seems intended to frighten or upset the reader is an attempt to encourage action without thought.</span></p></li></ul><br><p><span>What to do if you receive a phishing email?</span></p><br><p><span>If you do receive an email that you believe is a scam, please DO NOT respond any further or click on any URLs. If you have provided any banking or financial information, please notify your bank or financial institution immediately. If you have been sent a check, you should not attempt to cash or deposit it. If you have deposited a check already, please contact your bank and tell them that it may be part of a scam.</span></p><br><p><span>Whether or not you responded to the scam or not, please forward the message (with the email headers) to </span><a href="mailto:security@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>security@umbc.edu</span></a><span>. We will also keep track of any other information you submit about the scammers, such as their phone numbers.     <div class="html-content"><p><span>Yes, The Offer Really IS Too Good To Be True. </span></p><br><p><span>Below is an example of a job scam reported to the Department of Information Technology (DoIT). The scammer, impersonating one of several faculty members, is using a compromised UMBC account or a Gmail account to send the fake offers. The email claims that users must contact the sender at the provided phone number to get the job. The job offered in this email though is fake and the message a scam, please do not reply to this or any similar email.</span></p><p><span>This message does show some red flags that suggest phishing: poor grammar and misplaced capitalization. Notice how words like “also” and “do” are capitalized after a comma. This is not the type of grammar or capitalization most would expect from a professional email.</span></p><br><p><span>What to do now?</span></p><p><span>If you do receive any of these scams shown above or a similar scam, please DO NOT respond any further or click on any URLs. If you have provided any banking or financial information, please notify your bank or financial institution immediately. If you have been sent a check, you should not attempt to cash or deposit it.     <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Early next week, the week of 3/8/21, the Webex app, formerly Webex Teams, will receive an upgrade enabling all features contained in the Webex meetings app. This change makes for a more simple user experience and means that many campus users will no longer need to run a second Webex Meetings software.</span></p><br><p><span>For the last year much of the campus community has needed to run both the Webex Meetings and the Webex (Teams) software in order to have complete functionality for calling, asynchronous communication and in-meeting experiences. In the next week Webex users will be able to upgrade their Webex application to include all in-meeting features previously available only in the Webex Meetings software.     <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>In this second of a <a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=98545" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">series</a> of updates we’ll give a brief description of Salesforce, UMBC’s goals for the project, and summarize what we’re currently working on and what’s next.</span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span>Salesforce is a market-leading Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platform.   In higher education, CRMs are used in recruitment, admissions, student success, and alumni relations.  Salesforce is an important tool to help us maintain and grow our enrollment...vital to UMBC’s ability to weather the pandemic and our long term response to changing age-based demographics in our region.</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>Big news! Salesforce will launch on March 3</span><span>rd</span><span>. “Launch” means that all prospective undergraduate student communications and their activities will be collected, analyzed, and maintained in Salesforce making it the system of record for prospective student data.  </span></p><br><p><span>The next phase of the project is integrating prospective students’ requests for information, built and tested by our team, into the platform.  Marketing Cloud, a companion product to Salesforce, uses information from these requests from potential students with a personalized journey (experience) and helps admissions staff identify what information might be of most use to them.  </span></p><br><p><span>At the same time the team is finalizing the launch, we’re also conducting training and activities to maximize the value of our investment and taking important steps to extend the platforms to the Graduate School and Division of Professional Studies.  </span></p><br><p><span>This is a big project with many interconnected tasks.
