Project: The West Pagoda: Three and a Half Centuries of a Chinese Neighborhood

 

The Dresher Center for the Humanities and the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) invites applications for Summer Faculty Research Fellowships (SFRF). Funding is intended to support and promote significant humanities research at UMBC. Proposals are welcome and will be considered from all full-time, tenured or tenure-track UMBC faculty pursuing humanities research in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Proposals will be reviewed by the Dresher Center Advisory Board.

Dresher Center Summer Faculty Research Fellowship applications for Summer 2019 are due on February 15, 2019.

Dresher Center Summer Faculty Research Fellows (individuals or groups) will receive $6,000 support for summer research and assistance in developing extramural funding applications, book proposals, and grant project applications. Funding may also be used for the completion of book manuscripts, major articles, or projects of a similar stature. Between one and three fellowships will be awarded.

The UMBC Interdisciplinary CoLab supports 3-5 narrative-based research projects to provide undergraduate students with an innovative, team-based applied learning opportunity through a three-credit (4-week, 30-hours per week) paid internship.

Ideal projects bring together 3-5 students with a UMBC faculty or staff member, who serves as the Project Leader

• to utilize diverse research methods, modes of analysis, and tools
• to produce public-facing final projects. 

For example, projects could engage with archived texts and images to develop websites, build podcasts from oral history or ethnographic interviews, or work with communities on documentary films and digital stories.

The goal is to provide students with an interdisciplinary research experience while developing collaborative skills, telling effective stories, and amplifying voices to the general public. Projects can be proposed by faculty or staff members, alone or in collaboration with outside community partners.

You have likely heard of the Fulbright U.S. Student program, but how much do you know about the Fulbright Scholar program?

All CAHSS Faculty are invited to come learn about Fulbright Scholar award programs, including semester- and year-long fellowships, short-term research stays, teaching visits, and postdoctoral scholarships. Past CAHSS Faculty awardees will share their experiences.

A Fulbright Scholar Program officer, as well as staff from the UMBC Office of International Education Services, will be on hand to provide information and answer questions about various programs and the application process.

Project: "Post-WWII Denazification as Transitional Justice"

Conceptualizing denazification as transitional justice requires positing the process as part of a reckoning with the recent past in pursuit of truth and justice, as prerequisites to reconciliation, and ultimately democratization. While the WWII Allies considered denazificaton as a prerequisite to reconciliation, the Germans least complicit with the Nazi regime usually had the most interest in denazification as transitional justice. Contradictions abound when military governments seek to impose democracy. Perhaps the best a foreign occupier can achieve in a country they have fought, invaded and defeated in war, is to set up legal and participatory political structures and regulate socio-economic frameworks in ways to restrict anti-democratic tendencies and promote opportunities for the growth of democracy. The lens of transitional justice will help reveal the limits of occupation and the necessity of removing anti-democratic obstacles to and setting up the framework and structures for civil society.

Aimi Bouillon, M.F.A Candidate, Intermedia + Digital Arts Graduate Program

Project: "Finding Ryukyu"

For her thesis project, Aimi aims to capture the hidden histories of local plant life, memorials, and landscapes in what are sometimes called somaesthetic structures, or affective environments that shape and perpetuate human behavior. Through images of the Okinawan environment, she seeks to discover indigenous Ryukyuan concepts used in maintaining healthy family, community, and societal relations with nature. She will be mining the symbolic capacity of documentary photography to represent known and unknown schematic narratives of Ryukyuan histories.
