IRS Job Posting information from recent UMBC grad

<Tagline>But application due soon</Tagline>

I'm forwarding a job opportunity with my team at the IRS. We're
looking for a college graduate (or soon to be) with an
Economics/Financial Economics degree for an Economist position in
Washington DC. Those who have graduated within the last two years are
also eligible to apply. A student with at least a 3.0 GPA will start at
GS-07 ($53,105) with full federal benefits. The promotion potential for
the position is GS-12 ($94,199-$122,459). The lower end of that range
can be reached in 3 years with satisfactory performance evaluations. The
good thing about federal service is that higher promotions or lateral
movement to other agencies (Treasury HQ, SEC, BEA, CFPB, OCC etc.) with
higher promotion ladders is always possible, just not guaranteed.

I
HIGHLY recommend anyone with prior federal internships, tax experience
(ex. VITA), statistical programming experience (ex. SAS, R, STATA
etc.) to apply. The job is mostly remote but with some days in the
office. The deadline is February 14th, so they would need to apply very
soon. Putting together a federal resume in USAJOBS should only take an
hour or two and submitting the application with an unofficial transcript
     is straightforward.

Applicants have to be
filtered through a neutral reviewer at OPM before reaching the hiring
committee so if any of the students have the following experience,
please reword the following bullet points with specific details in their
federal resume (I bolded what's especially important):

Experience applying the methods and principles of economics and their application to research projects

Experience with research and study design and administration processes

Experience in determining the economic significance of information reported on tax returns and a working experience of both present and prior tax laws

Experience using computer programming languages and statistical software packages (ex. SAS, R, STATA etc.)

And,
of course, I am happy to offer interview advice and put in a good word
for UMBC grads. My manager told me to get the word out wherever there
    are more of me.

I hope you all are doing well! I miss you guys and hope the semester started smoothly.

The Board of Governors and the 12 Federal Reserve Banks throughout the country are currently recruiting upcoming graduates to fill multiple Research Assistant positions that will become available in spring and summer 2023. The positions are full-time, salaried, and offer full benefits, including tuition assistance.

The Federal Reserve System is committed to attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse workforce. We recognize the benefit derived from different perspectives and experiences and we look carefully at candidates’ applications to identify individuals whose perspectives could benefit our work. As such, we especially encourage submissions from individuals of groups traditionally less represented in economics.

Research Assistants work closely with economists at the top of their fields on a variety of research questions and real-world policy issues while developing a toolkit beneficial for graduate study and future career paths. Research Assistants typically work for two to three years, before going on to competitive graduate programs or pursuing other careers.

We seek individuals with strong academic records and excellent written and oral communication skills. Competitive candidates should have intermediate coursework in economics and a strong foundation in mathematics and statistics. We also look for prior research experience, demonstrated interest in economics, programming experience, and familiarity with statistical programming packages, such as STATA, MATLAB, and R. Most positions require US citizenship, but some Reserve Banks consider non-U.S. citizen candidates.
