Thank you for distributing this information to graduating students in your department to alert them of these openings.

The Federal Reserve System is committed to attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse workforce.
Research Assistants work closely with economists at the top of their fields on a variety of research questions and real-world policy issues while developing a toolkit beneficial for graduate study and future career paths.

We seek individuals with strong academic records and excellent written and oral communication skills. We also look for prior research experience, demonstrated interest in economics, programming experience, and familiarity with statistical programming packages, such as STATA, MATLAB, and R. Most positions require US citizenship, but some Reserve Banks consider non-U.S. citizen candidates.

Dear Colleague,

I want to bring to your attention internship opportunities for rising sophomores in the New York Fed’s Research and Statistics Group in the summer of 2021. Your familiarity with undergraduates at your institution will be of tremendous help in alerting talented sophomores (graduating in Winter 2022 or Spring 2023) to our Sophomore Analyst positions.

Analysts play an integral role in the research and policy work of New York Fed economists on topics including macroeconomics, microeconomics, banking and payment systems, capital markets, and international economics. The New York Fed has a highly respected program for full-time Research Analysts who join us for two years after graduating college and then successfully pursue graduate school, private-sector or public-sector positions. Our RAs have consistently been accepted by the very best U.S. graduate programs in economics and finance as well as in law and public policy. Our summer internship program is an excellent opportunity to experience the work of an analyst. We have an established Junior Analyst internship program, many of whom have returned as full-time RAs upon graduation. Today, we are contacting you about the Sophomore Analyst program which was recently created to also offer internship experiences to sophomores.

We seek candidates who have records of strong scholarship and academic curiosity. Analysts usually have a background in economics, policy, mathematics, or computer science, though a major in one of these fields is not a necessity. Successful candidates often have an interest in academic research, and many are considering careers in economic research, public policy, public service, or related fields.

We explicitly seek candidates from a wide range of backgrounds, particularly those that are typically underrepresented in the economics profession. Our programs are at the beginning of the “pipeline” to an economics career so it is important to us that we recruit a diverse cohort of Analysts each year. As a representative of your institution and student body, we ask that you please help us in passing this message along to any candidates you may know who may be otherwise hesitant to apply.

Applications for Sophomore Analyst internships are being accepted now, on a rolling basis, at https://www.newyorkfed.org/careers/student-programs-and-internships/sophomore-career-exploration-program. It is recommended that candidates apply by September 15th.

In a few weeks, we will also post opportunities for Junior Analyst internships (graduating in Winter 2021 or Spring 2022) and our full-time Research Analyst position (graduating in Winter 2020 or Spring 2021). We will send a reminder e-mail when those positions are posted athttps://www.newyorkfed.org/careers/student-programs-and-internships. Please email ny.fed.ra.recruiting@ny.frb.org with any questions.

Sincerely,

Notice to Economics and Financial Economics Students

<Tagline>RE: Retaking Pass/Fail Classes if Required</Tagline>

Notice to Economics & Financial Economics Students

If you took one of these courses:

ECON 101, ECON 102, ECON 121, ECON 122, ECON 301, ECON 311, ECON 312, ECON 374, MATH 151, MATH 155, STAT 350, STAT 351, STAT 355, STAT 453, CMPE 320

If you took any one of these courses in Spring 2020 for a grade of P and you plan to complete either the Economics B.A. or the Financial Economics B.S., then it is strongly recommended that you RETAKE the course for a letter grade.

If you do not complete this course with a grade of C or better, then you will be at risk of not meeting prerequisites for required upper level courses in these majors and for not meeting ECON and FIEC major graduation requirements.

These courses and their eligibility for the P/F grading method were announced to students on April 7th; that announcement was sent as an email and was posted to the Econ Group site on MyUMBC. It has come to our attention that many students who changed their grading method to a "P" to improve their grade point average were not advised to do so.

Again, this only applies to the classes listed above and to students declared or intending to pursue an Econ B.A. or FIEC B.S. degree.

If you have further questions, please contact your academic advisor.
