Taking Certification Exams while a student (CMA and CFA)
Something to consider
Some of the financial certifications allow you to take some of the exams
while a student in your senior year. Some of you may have time to do this during the summer and fall as other opportunities have not materialized. This might be a good time to prepare to take one of the certification exams later in 2020 or in 2021. Having successfully passed a part of one of these exams is a definite resume booster for competitive entry-level positions.
Also, reduced fees and/or scholarships are available for students.

Demographic Research Area
The Census Bureau is hiring multiple survey statisticians in the Demographic Research Area, Center for Economic Studies.
The Demographic Research Area in the Center for Economic Studies (CES) is looking to fill multiple GS-13 survey statistician positions. The posting is open until June 22, 2020.
The Demographic Research Area comprises a multi-disciplinary staff of social science researchers (e.g. demographers, economists, geographers, sociologists) responsible for researching, developing, coordinating and implementing innovative applications of administrative records to improve Census Bureau data collection operations and data products. The area consists of two research groups: the Survey and Economic Research Group and the Demographic and Decennial Research Group.
The Survey and Economic Research Group focuses on novel applications of administrative records in Census Bureau household survey data collection efforts. The group is responsible for researching and testing innovative methods to improve all phases of the survey life cycle, including frame development, data collection, data processing (including edit and imputation), evaluation and dissemination.
The Demographic and Decennial Research Group works with internal and external stakeholders, sponsors, and data providers to improve decennial census collection efforts. Examples include: researching measurement error in common household survey items such as demographics, household rosters, and participation in public assistance programs; assessing coverage of administrative records in the decennial census and household surveys; and analyzing response changes across multiple censuses and surveys.

Access to Belongings in Academic Buildings
We are hopeful each of you continue to remain safe and healthy during the unprecedented times. These are unusual circumstances we all find ourselves in, and much like you, we continue to learn about our new realities daily; however, during all of this, our top priority is to continue to serve your needs.
We are aware that many of you have personal belongings in the academic buildings that you would like to retrieve. The colleges are working together to explore ways to help this happen safely and efficiently while maintaining social distancing standards. This is a multilayered process that will not be able to begin until UMBC is prepared to provide appropriate coordination of access and sanitation around campus; these coordination efforts will include members of the UMBC Police, college and university building managers, and Environmental Safety and Health. Keeping that in mind we want to be proactive in our planning so we are able to initiate the process as soon as we are given the go ahead from the Governor and campus officials.
The first step in our process requires your input so we can plan appropriately based on your needs. If you have items in departmental areas, offices, or labs that you would like to retrieve prior to classes being back on campus please complete the Google Form on the website noted below. We will use the information you provide to develop an access timeline that can be implemented at a later date. As this timeline is finalized we will be in touch to schedule your access time. We are also exploring alternative methods for returning your belongings, which are included in the questionnaire.
Please be sure to only complete this form if you have items needing to be retrieved. We will be reviewing your responses on Friday May 22; we would appreciate getting your response by the end of Thursday May 21 in order to best plan for your eventual access. Please remember that you should not be on campus until you have a time slot confirmed, regardless on what the current state directives are.

Social Science URAs provide up to $1,500 to undergraduate researchers whose work, in collaboration with a faculty mentor, uses social science to explore the world or address socially relevant concerns. Recipients agree to present their work as part of an URCAD panel and other groups of social science students at UMBC. To be eligible for a Social Science URA, you must be enrolled as a UMBC student for the duration of the work proposed and must adhere to all the requirements of the URA program. - Be creative in the ways you think about your project. You may have to focus instead on doing a thorough literature review, using a pre-formed data set to analyze, or looking at case studies, rather than collecting in-person data, or conducting research in a lab.
- Methods such as lab benchwork, participant observations, focus groups, travel-related, in-person interviews, or other real-time collection methods may need some re-thinking. How can you collect data via online interviews, the internet, or other technological interventions?
- Creative arts projects may incorporate some kind of online delivery method. We are hoping to be back on campus for URCAD 2021, but consider how VoiceThread might be used to display your creative work.

There are many changes happening to student research as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and campus closure. The URA selection committee has some advice to encourage you to apply for a URA and start to plan your research, even if there are some unknowns for the summer and fall semesters.
