The Maryland Board of Elections has placed an official ballot dropoff box in The Commons, meaning members of the UMBC community who are Maryland voters can cast their votes on campus. You will need to be registered and request a mail-in ballot, which you can place in the box after you have completed it.

As of this posting, UMBC is #6 in the United States in the number of pledges to vote made by students through ALL IN to Vote’s Pledge to Vote competition. Take the pledge and spread the word.

Dear Graduate Students, Pursuant to the recent increase in transit demand by graduate students, the Graduate Assistants Advisory Committee (GAAC) is conducting a survey to understand the transit demands of graduate students, specifically graduate assistants, who need to be on campus multiple days a week and primarily rely on the UMBC transit service to commute to campus. Filling out the survey will help us identify gaps in transit schedules and routes, if any. The information collected through this survey will be shared with the Transit office to meet the transit needs of UMBC's graduate students.

We will have a poster session, a raffle, UMBC swag, food and drinks! 

During this event we will also announce the winners of the first LHFA awards and recognize the trajectory of Dr. Ana María Schwartz Caballero at UMBC. Come join us! 

This event will feature a poster session to share our research and ongoing projects with students and other faculty. If you are already have a poster, please share it with all of us, since students are invited, it would be a great opportunity to showcase the work we do.

We hope your Octobers are off to a great start! Our staff would like to provide some updates of our hours for two of our three spaces. These changes have taken effect due to full-time and student staff availability, as well as adjusting hours for higher traffic times to maximize our resources to our community members. As of today the hours for our spaces are as follows:

The Mosaic: Center for Cultural Diversity
Monday: 10:00am-6:00pm
Tuesday: 10:00am-6:00pm
Wednesday: Noon - 8:00pm
Thursday: 10:00am-6:00pm
Friday: 10:00am-6:00pm
Weekends: Closed

The Pride Center 
Monday: 11:00am-9:30pm
Tuesday: 11:00am-9:30pm
Wednesday: 11:00am-9:300pm
Thursday: 11:00am-9:30pm
Friday: 11:00am-5:00pm
Weekends: Closed

September 15th to October 15th is National Hispanic Heritage Month. Throughout this time, i3b, UMBC and country celebrates the important contributions, heritage, and culture of all Hispanic and Latinos in the United States. 


Honoring our Hispanic/Latin(e/x) community and their influence on our country, we recognize culture and traditions that have shaped all of our communities. Hispanic Heritage Month further celebrates the traditions, cultures, families, love, and service all Hispanic and Latin(e/x) folks. 


History of Hispanic Heritage Month

Beginning on September 15th, Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the anniversary of independence of the Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, dating back to 1968. Additionally, Mexico, Chile, and Belize also celebrate their independence days during this period with Día de la Raza on October 12th.


The term Hispanic, referring to the racial and ethnic groups of folks from hisphanophone (Spanish Speaking) countries, that were historically colonized by Spain. This term is inclusive to those of Spanish origin. The term Latino, excludes Spain, but includes non-Spanish speaking Latin American countries such as Belize, Brazil, Guyana, and Haiti. Some folks may have ethnic roots from Latin America, and may use either, neither, or both Hispanic and/or Latino.
