<Title>Center for Democracy &amp; Civic Life Intern Positions [PAID]</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>The Center for Democracy and Civic Life is looking for undergraduate and graduate students to join our team as 2024 - 2025 interns. Interns support the Center's programs and initiatives, working collaboratively with other members of the staff. Each intern has a particular area of focus, but all members of the team are involved in developing and producing the Center's work. Interns work a minimum of 10 hours per week during the academic year, with some variation to be determined. Internships will begin in late August 2024 and conclude in May 2025.</span><br><br><span>The internships available for 2024 - 2025 are:</span><br><br><strong>Evaluation intern </strong><span>(undergraduate and graduate students): Evaluation interns support the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's assessment, evaluation, and research projects; investigate topics related to Center for Democracy and Civic Life programs; and support the Center's contributions to national higher education initiatives.</span><br><br><strong>Special projects intern </strong><span>(undergraduate students only): Special projects interns support the planning and implementation of the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's programs and initiatives. Tasks may include finding and compiling information, preparing instructional materials, ensuring the availability of program supplies, creating and distributing promotional materials, helping with program setup and cleanup, and guiding and checking in guests at program venues.</span><br><br><strong>Political engagement intern </strong><span>(undergraduate and graduate students): Political engagement interns support programs that foster dialogue about current events and issues; connect UMBC students with the legislative process in Annapolis; engage them in politics and pathways to political leadership; and encourage their participation in local, state, and national elections.</span><br><br><span>All intern positions pay $15.00/hour to start.</span><br><br><span>All undergraduate and graduate students with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA are invited to apply.     <div class="html-content"><div><span><div><strong>What is Meet and Confer (M&amp;C)?</strong></div><p>Meet and Confer (M&amp;C) is a policy within the University System of Maryland (USM) that allows Graduate Assistants to participate in formal discussions with the administration regarding employment-related matters, including compensation and benefits. To learn more about M&amp;C, please visit the <a href="https://gsa.umbc.edu/meet-confer/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC website.</a></p><div><br></div><div><strong>M&amp;C Meetings- Spring '24</strong></div><p>This year, we have adopted a new approach by organizing separate M&amp;C meetings for each college at UMBC. This strategy is designed to address specific issues facing Graduate Assistants within individual colleges and departments in a more focused manner. Additionally, we have extended invitations to department chairs to ensure that department-level administration actively participates in resolving GA-related concerns, in collaboration with graduate school administration.</p><div><br></div><div>The <strong>CNMS M&amp;C Meeting is scheduled for March 11th</strong>, and we strongly encourage all <strong>GAs from Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics and Statistics</strong> to complete <strong>the <a href="https://forms.gle/uUjfizKPBAaox2Fs9" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">survey</a></strong>.     <div class="html-content"><div><p>The Office for Academic &amp; Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for Summer Orientation Advisors! Advisors meet with incoming students VIRTUALLY during the months of June-August in one-on-one sessions to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary!</p><p><br></p></div><div><div><div>Besides compensation, this is a rare chance for graduate students to gain professional and interpersonal experience. Depending on your field, your time as a student may not open you up to many client-facing interactions, and this is a pathway to gaining that experience. If you are considering ANY career path where importance is placed on the ability to interact with clients in a positive manner, this is a TERRIFIC opportunity to add this valuable experience to your resume. <Title>Leap Day is Rare Disease Day</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><a href="https://accessibility.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Accessibility and Disability Services</a> is showing its stripes  in raising awareness for Rare Disease Day on the rare leap day, February 29.<div><br></div><div><h3><span><a href="https://www.rarediseaseday.org/what-is-rare-disease-day/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">What is Rare Disease Day? </a></span></h3><div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Rare Disease Day is the globally-coordinated movement on rare diseases, working towards equity in social opportunity, healthcare, and access to diagnosis and therapies for people living with a rare disease.</span></div><div><span><a href="https://youtu.be/zEQ828Lkxac" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><br></a></span></div><div><span><a href="https://youtu.be/zEQ828Lkxac" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">A quick video about Rare Disease Awareness is linked here</a></span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Since its creation in 2008, Rare Disease Day has played a critical part in building an international rare disease community that is multi-disease, global, and diverse– but united in purpose.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Rare Disease Day is observed every year on 28 February (or 29 in leap years)—the rarest day of the year.</span></div></div><div><span><div><br></div><div>Though Rare Disease Day is patient-led, everyone, including individuals, families, caregivers, healthcare professionals, researchers, clinicians, policy makers, industry representatives and the general public, can participate in raising awareness and taking action today for this vulnerable population who require immediate and urgent attention.</div><div><br></div><div>By Sharing your colors via social media, events, illuminating buildings, monuments and homes, by sharing experiences online and with friends, by calling on policy makers and shining the light on people living with a rare disease, collectively we aim to change and improve lives of the 300 million people worldwide.</div></span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span><br></span></div><h3><br></h3><div><span>Historically, ADS has worked with campus sustainability efforts in recognition in a way that mirrors the <a href="https://www.ngocommitteerarediseases.org/un-resolution-on-persons-living-with-a-rare-disease-and-their-families/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">United Nations Resolution on Persons Living with a Rare Disease and their Families</a></span></div><div><br></div><div>The overarching goal of the UN campaign is to recognize that People Living With Rare Disease (PLWRD) are an overlooked population requiring immediate and urgent attention, and global and national policies that address their needs and contribute to achieving the UN 2030 Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals and their pledge to ‘leave no one behind’. </div><div><br></div><div>The 300 million PLWRD around the world and their families face common challenges in all aspects of their daily lives. As a population with increasing vulnerabilities, they are disproportionally affected by stigma, discrimination and social marginalization, within their social environment and in society at large.
