GEARS, UMBC ’s Graduate Experience, Achievements, and Research Symposium invites graduate students to participate in some fun and exciting events this semester!

During Ideathon new or existing problems can be better tackled by using their new idea. Participants will present their ideas to the jury and fellow graduate students in UMBC.
This event will highlight your creative skills and the uniqueness of your idea, which can be social, environmental, IT technology, medical field related, etc. These ideas can be real or hypothetical. You create a three-minute presentation showcasing your idea and how unique it is. All the participants are eligible for UMBC prizes.
PowerPoint Roulette is a fun event that tests your ability to think on-the-spot and speak publicly! During this competition, you will present a PowerPoint on a random topic you are not prepared for, with slides you have never seen.

Spring SDS Brown Bag Learning Series
Are you a student looking for assistive technology?
Are you a faculty member who received a letter of accommodation and wants to learn more?
Are you a student curious about assistive technology?
This series is open to all students, staff, and faculty interested in learning more about the intersection of accommodations and technology. We will be demonstrating low tech, and other assistive technology, demonstration captioning options and document remediation
All sessions will be held from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM in Math Psychology 222
Session 1. February 22nd, 12:00-1:00 This session will focus on an introduction to assistive technology available to all students, staff, and faculty
Session 2. March 22nd, 12:00 – 1:00 “I received a letter of accommodation…now what?” This session will take a deep dive into accommodations and their relation to functional limitations
Session 3. April 29th, 12:00 – 1:00 The subject matter for this session will be determined by survey results of what you, the community, would like to learn more about
Session 4 May 17th, 12:00 – 1:00 This session will focus on preparations for accessible course content.

Women's Center Returning Adult Learners 2023-24 Scholarships
Accepting Applications Friday, April 7th, 2023!
The Women's Center's Returning Adult Learners Scholarships Application for 2023-24 is available now via Scholarship Retriever to undergraduate students who meet the eligibility requirements.
The deadline for submission via Scholarship Retriever is Friday, April 8, 2023.
This common application which is called Women's Center: Returning Adult Learners 2023-2024 in Scholarship Retriever enables eligible students to apply for more than one of the Returning Adult Learner Scholarships with just one submission. Please note that this opportunity to apply will only appear in Scholarship Retriever to students who meet the scholarship qualifications. The six available scholarships via the Returning Adult Learner Scholarship Application are:
- Charlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship & The UMBC Scholarship for Returning Adult Learners
- Jodi Mister/Charlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship
- Charlotte W. Newcombe STEM Scholarship
- AEGON Scholarship
- The Richard & Roselyn Bryson Neville Memorial Fund for Returning Women Scholarship
- The Rosalie Tydings Business and Professional Women’s Scholarship
Undergraduate students of any gender over the age of 25 and with at least 60 credits and 2.5 GPA may be eligible. Students must be completing their first undergraduate degree.
If a student does not meet these requirements, the scholarship opportunity will not appear on Scholarship Retriever. Students who have not completed the FAFSA will not see the opportunity in Scholarship Retriever. Students who wish to still be considered despite not meeting these requirements should contact the Women's Center directly. This encouragement to reach out directly to the Women's Center extends to students who have extenuating circumstances (i.e. students who are DACA/undocumented) that may prevent them from completing the FAFSA.
Students who are selected to be scholars are required to participate in the Returning Adult Learners Scholars + Affiliates program. For more information about the program, visit our website and be sure to attend an information session.

The
UMBC Department of Education Research Seminar series continues with a
presentation by Keisha McIntosh Allen, Corey Carter, and Jackie Peng.
They will discuss a study that systematically investigates the
framework of learning teaching as an interpretive process (LTIP)
advanced by Etta Ruth Hollins
and its impact on the learning outcomes of teacher candidates who are
Sherman Program scholars at UMBC. The study uses naturalistic,
constructivist qualitative inquiry methods, which assume that meaning
can be made based on observations in natural rather than controlled
contexts.
All members of the
department, partners/collaborators, and students/faculty from other departments are invited to attend. Lunch will be provided by the department. Please RSVP by February 24th by completing this form:
